Sir Kingfish Beavis D'Azzmonch (Kingfish), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah, and Shaun Ryder shows up, voicing a character named "Maccer."

they even game him his own fake website at http://www.maccer.net/

Born in Salford in 1965, MACCER made partying into a lifestyle, and hard partying into a religion. He invented the musical style that became known as EXTREMELY BAGGY. There isn't a drug he hasn't tried, a form of self abuse he has not practiced and a musical taboo he has not broken. With The Gurning Chimps he took the sound of Manchester to the world. The world did not know what had hit it. For years, Maccer and the rest of The Chimps, under the careful stewardship of notorious manager Pabsy (whatever happened to him?) toured the world, leaving a trail of destruction, stains and mayhem whereever they went...

Sir Kingfish Beavis D'Azzmonch (Kingfish), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha i was so sure this was gonna be a patrin thread.

...FREE BIRD!

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

AMAZING reggae and country stations in particular.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

It's many times more appealing than the Vice City soundtrack, for me.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

This is for me though:

* SWV - I'm So Into You
* Soul II Soul - Keep On Movin
* Samuelle - So You Like What You See
* En Vogue - My Lovin'
* Johnny Gill - Rub You The Right Way
* Ralph Tresvant - Sensitivity

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i've always wanted to slaughter hookers to the sounds of "your love".

Always.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Rockstar is fucking off the hook, yo.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I would take issue with the "alternative" station but it adqeuately represents everything that was wrong with American radio in the early 90s and is therefore very realistic (I'm guessing they couldn't get "Creep"? Thank god).

But no straight up pop station? No Sophie B Hawkins or Martika??

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

delete the alternative tracks and you've got yrself a hell of a mix.

paranoia is the hipster's disease (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

ok "pretend we're dead" can stay.

paranoia is the hipster's disease (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Why are all the Grand Theft Auto cds so good?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, this game would have been truly great if it allowed you to run people over to a Sinead OConnor or Janet Jackson or Paula Abdul song...

xpost b/c they make more money than God on every game, and i would figure have an unlimited supply of capital for music licensing.

GTA3 sold like 10.5M copies, and VC was 11.5M. at US$50/game, that's aint bad

Sir Kingfish Beavis D'Azzmonch (Kingfish), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah and the PC version should allow you to import your own playlists/mp3 directories, so feel free to start assembling your own stations.

Sir Kingfish Beavis D'Azzmonch (Kingfish), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know why they are so good but they are. I bought the box set for vice city and was totally impressed. Some duff tracks for sure but a great comp all around.

Looking forward to this one as well.

hector (hector), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

This makes the early 90s look good!

It's a revisionist version of my teenage years intended to misinform the children of today.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

and no Milli Vanilli

Sir Kingfish Beavis D'Azzmonch (Kingfish), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

no color me badd either

paranoia is the hipster's disease (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 21 October 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

or Snow/Vanilla Ice

Sir Kingfish Beavis D'Azzmonch (Kingfish), Thursday, 21 October 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

no snow
doublepost!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 21 October 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

or amy grant

paranoia is the hipster's disease (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 21 October 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The alternative list is a revision of the revisionism we've put on it since! That's exactly what passed for "alternative" at the time.

The VC electro comp. was definitive. I burned it and listen to it all the time.

Rock star are such complete pop culture nerds, and not in a nerdy way.

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 22 October 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Or Billy Ray Cyrus, which means the country station is so fresh so clean.

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Friday, 22 October 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man these look great. specially th house and th funk one. oh and th country one too.

sir kingfish, i think i read that san andreas isn't going to be released on pc. anyone else know if this is true?

whenuweremine (whenuweremine), Friday, 22 October 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

no PRINCE?

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 22 October 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

He wasn't in Vice City, either. I doubt they were able to get the rights.

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Friday, 22 October 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

This will be the greatest goddamn soundtrack ever.

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 22 October 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

* SWV - I'm So Into You
* Soul II Soul - Keep On Movin
* Samuelle - So You Like What You See

for me also...

What year does SA take place in anyway?

startrekman, Friday, 22 October 2004 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Vice was the eighties, press on SA has it at 92, I think.

Shame about Prince; I have no doubt they went after him too. Pity.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 22 October 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Hands up if you remember his video game.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 22 October 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I had no idea there was a Prince video game! I love Michael Jackson's Moonwalker for the Genesis tho.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

PC version hits summer 2005, at least in america.

according to what i've heard, at least.

i heard them describing the game era as just "early 90's"

Sir Kingfish Beavis D'Azzmonch (Kingfish), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It wasn't exactly a game per se... Interactive

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 22 October 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

What's with the "delete the alternative tracks" stuff? That's a really lame sentiment. 'We're sick of it a decade later, therefore it sucks and brings everything else down.' What exactly would be more representative of that time than STP, GNR, and Alice in Chains?
Pavement?
PJ Harvey?
Sonic Youth, Stereolab?
Not for mainstream radio in the early 90s.

If you're 30+ and just didn't like it back then, that's one thing. But if you've moved on since then and now have contempt for what you grew up on: grow up again.

(Don't mean to sound angry, just trying to defend "alternative," and Rockstar's representation of it).

Richard K (Richard K), Friday, 22 October 2004 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I think we're saying it's great for games, bad for mixtapes. Is that okay?

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 22 October 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

yes. :embarassment:

Richard K (Richard K), Friday, 22 October 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha... http://www.maccer.net/maccerPressConference.mp3

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 22 October 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm 28 and i didn't care much for most of the "radio x" alternative bands in the early '90s. and no, i don't think pavement and stereolab would be more appropriate.

paranoia is the hipster's disease (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 22 October 2004 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

holy shit this thing

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 22 October 2004 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

You said it.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 22 October 2004 06:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep....this soundtrack is fucking amazing...can't wait to get my box set!

Some of the Rockstar guys that founded the company have a background in the music biz....Terry Donovan was A&R for a techno wing of a label in the UK for awhile....they're pretty big pop culture nerds...really really smart and savvy guys.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 22 October 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

it would be cool to include a pirate radio station (there are a few between san francisco and los angles yes?) to play punk and alternative that wouldnt be on kroc clones. What better than have police story by black flag playing as you get chassed by the FBI in their black suv's
"they hate us, we hate them, we can't win"

jb, Friday, 22 October 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The gangsta rap station looks particularly sweet. Can you really say "fuck" in a video game nowadays?

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 22 October 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the lack of Dead Kennedys (say, "Police Truck")is disconcerting

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Friday, 22 October 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost
Dude, Vice City was all about getting blowjobs in cars from whores and then shooting them to get your money back.
Saying fuck is okay.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 22 October 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't some of the passers by shout 'fuck you!' in 'Vice City'?

Alba (Alba), Friday, 22 October 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

SAN FRANCISCO

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 22 October 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
Hank Williams' "Hey Good Looking" is pretty lame, but other than that I've fallen in love with the Country Music station (expected duration of affair: approx one more day). Patricularly Juice Newton. It's like Abba made country!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 14 November 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Skatt Bros! The GTA dudes are from Glasgow, right? Bet they're familiar w/Optimo.

they are based in edinburgh (50 miles away) although all the music was put together from the new york office.

funnily enough, we were approached to do a mix for this but unfortunately it didn't pan out.

oh, and karl lagerfield supposedly has one of the biggest record collections on the planet.

oh man, i need to get a new xbox for this.

was it common knowledge that tim sweeney of beats in space fame compiled the vice city and san andreas GTA soundtracks? think i only found that out recently.

haitch, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 01:38 (seventeen years ago)

Ah, right. 's a shame it didn't pan out - there's heaps of music in the GTA:IV stations I first heard through Optimo mixes (Fela Kuti's "Zombie" on Drum Attack!!); would've been amazing to have a new mix from you guys.

The ambient station looks excellent - music from Koyaanisqatsi, ha!

xpost: No, what?!

etc, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 01:40 (seventeen years ago)

actually just san andreas plus some other R* games, it even says so on the BIS site!

I can't believe more people haven't commented on getting Roy Haynes on the jazz station - dude drummed for Charlie Parker! & pretty much everyone else!

Wish the Kavinsky on François K's station wasn't the fucking Sebastian mix, sigh. Including Nitzer Ebb just makes me wish they'd put Front 242's "Headhunter" on the station (which then makes me wish they could have fitted Renegade Soundwave's "Probably A Robbery" on ... somewhere).

three weeks pass...

GTA IV -- Vladivostock FM popped up on eMusic. Looks interesting. Anyone heard it (or portions thereof)? Any good?

the best bit about this game is not to know the stations then you freak out when audio gold comes one.

like Underwater or last night i had "just be good to me", and theres quite a lot of underrated songs, especially on the rock station.

I wouldnt buy any Cds of it though, because you interact with the surroundings, you link the music to your actions far more than with a film soundtrack, so I think just sitting down and listening to the music would be an anticlimax.
