everyone else on ILM hates them.

I think they're great! the last album was probably the best one so far. so I'm interested to hear another one, especially if they go really headlong into the Floydian "fearless" pothead direction.

their Dick Slessig Trio side project routinely blows my mind. pop and country hits geometrically expanded out into 20 to 60 minute long textural jams by hypnotically looping each seperate bar of the song 16 to 128 times before moving on to the next one... certainly recommended to fans of the Necks...

Apparently, the Dick Slessig combo will be playing in the desert at a bar near a nuclear test site or something? I just got this rather cryptic communication. Folks in the LA area should probably check this out:

Hello people
Dick Slessig plays in the desert saturday oct 23 at the palms bar at high desert test site 4 in the evening. Thank you for your consideration.
Mr Slessig

Sounds far more interesting than the real band, yes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 October 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

someone should take their instruments away from them

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 22 October 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i do not understand the hate.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 22 October 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

re: Radar Bros.

they are criminally underrated in my book. Jimmy Putnam's lyrics are so perverse and cryptic and funny. I'm with you Kyle, what gives with the hate?

Drew Daniel, Friday, 22 October 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

is Jim Putnam involved with above mentioned Slessig trio ?

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Friday, 22 October 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The hate is just kneejerk ILM anti-indieness. Radar Bros. play that deceptively simple, slow floaty stuff that's so good at evoking California Desert driving... I think they've got some beautiful songs.

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Friday, 22 October 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

btw I adore the first radar bros. 6 song EP even though I suspect some of the perverse and funny lyrics on that one are about how much it sucked to be under my thumb in Medicine, ha ha. For me everything else since that EP has been a bit one dimensional.

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Friday, 22 October 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

And frankly every time I've seen them live opening up for some band or another in LA they've put me to sleep.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 October 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Jim is not in the Dick Slessig Combo.

Their instore as a threepiece at Aquarius was luvverly.

Performer drunken-ness is a key factor in the musical outcome of a given Radar Bros. evening.

Drew Daniel, Friday, 22 October 2004 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Its not indie knee jerk for me. I love a lot of bands that sound just like them. That's the problem.

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 22 October 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I love their stuff, thanks for the tip on the Slessig Trio - more to check out!

They may not be groundbreaking, but everything can't be groundbreaking. They're just good.

Garibaldianne (Garibaldianne), Friday, 22 October 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i quite liked "and the surrounding mountains". inconsequential, but pleasant.

don't think i could be bothered with another album, though.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 22 October 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I love 'em, and that's enough for me. Saw them when they toured "And the surrounding mountains" and they were great. A new album would be most welcome.

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 22 October 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

radar bros = sublime, especially the second s/t album with 'godess' on it

stevie (stevie), Friday, 22 October 2004 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"Goddess" is of course their best song. 'Dum-dum'ing along to a guitar solo = genius.

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 22 October 2004 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

'distant mines' is a close second - what a hook line, "so alone" - yuss!

stevie (stevie), Friday, 22 October 2004 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

more love for the bros.! i think their 'singing hatchet' release was their best. though that's probably because it was the first of their's that i had heard until then. that song towards the end, "open sea fishing" or something like that, is soooo fucking cool! that whole album is full of twisted floydian dreamscapes straight outta the 'meddle' through 'wish you were here' era. from the brand of hate expressed above i'm getting the feeling the radar bros. might be perceived as the indie-rock geek's answer to the dave matthews band or something.

three years pass...

Bump.

And they've got a new album out - "Auditorium" - and it's been out for a few months actually. Has anyone heard it? Is it any good? The lyrics are 'political' apparantly. Hmm.

Going through a bit of a Dick Slessig Trio deep dive during lockdown;

For the rare intersection of fans of both glen campbell and the necks, it’s the Dick Slessig Trio

Okay, some great news on the Dick Slessig Combo front. First: Guitarist Mark Lightcap has an instagram account called (um) "dickslessig". Dunno why I couldn't find this before but here it is. https://t.co/25oxTntgpI

Jon L who used to post here in the mid-aughts mentions a "Live at the Yerb" CDr that I can't find any non-ILx reference to.

A good recommendation, I need something to fill the slowcore void in my listening left by the cancellation of the Red House Painters. Jim Putnam's new Mt Wilson Repeater album is well worth checking out.
