Taking sides: Metal Machine Music v. Wolf Eyes

I take Wolf Eyes BUT I listened to MMM all the way through and it's really well done. Not a write off at all, as I've heard. The guitar tones are great.

It's not a completely logical comparison, but not completely illogical. If you ignore Wolf Eyes more electronic ambient-y stuff, they are very simmilar.

One is an album and the other is a band so it's not cut and dry, but I think they have the same goals. Who did it better?

No comparison.

MMM is garbage - always has been. You know you're in trouble when the artist himself can't bear to make it through the whole album. Pointless, pretentious dreck.

Wolf Eyes are america's best band.

So, landslide, sez I.

Gotta side with Roger.. though sometimes there are sonic similarities, MMM doesn't have much going for it in the way of stylistic range.

metal machine music is minimalism.

i can't really take sides here. it's like trance vs. possession.

I had no idea Wolf Eyes sounds like MMM! I'll have to check them out.

Do you really believe Reed can't sit through MMM, Roger?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Friday, 22 October 2004 06:28 (twenty-one years ago)

no, i don't, it's just a perverse kind of hyperbole from an arrogant asshole who hasn't made a decent song since 1973

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Friday, 22 October 2004 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. I don't like Lou Reed generally, but I like MMM. I love Wolf Eyes though, so a taking sides is easy - I just find it odd that so many of you are down on it.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Friday, 22 October 2004 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I like MMM. Didn't hear it until '98, though, and it's interesting how pretty and tame it sounds.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 22 October 2004 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

MMM is an attempt to take possession of a trance - and, in my view, a successful one.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 22 October 2004 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought the central joke of lou reed's post VU career was that he made tons of unlistenable albums and then there's "metal machine music."
