It took me a while, too. But the Doldrums totally rules.

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 22 October 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

this record reminds me of gary wilson...

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 22 October 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

super valid point there,. i think they know one another too

duke too, Friday, 22 October 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

he's also collaborated w/R. Stevie Moore. DIY experimental pop musicians unite.

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 22 October 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i hear Loose gots some tales too ticklish to tell about our man Pink.

Beta (abeta), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
Oh wow. I really love it.

sleep (sleep), Friday, 7 January 2005 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, at first i was like... uh... and then it was like... oh....

Hahaha...exactly my reaction. It's totally amazing.

Omar (Omar), Friday, 7 January 2005 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I pretty much hated this at first, the sound is just so terrible and it seemed like a gimmick, but it's grown on me big time. It's very calming to listen to at a low-level on my little CD player here at work. When played quiet all the subliminal pop radiosims soak in completely, and I start to feel like I've been teleported into a weird 70s AM dream. I was lost, now I'm a believer.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Said bloke is touring the UK at the moment, looking forward to catching him next week. What's he like live?

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

surprisingly like the recordings! tape hiss on stage!
(it's really good 5:30-7:30AM kind of music.)

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

hopefully he's playing a poorly-organized festival, to where he gets that sweet time slot.

tender milch, Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw him live once and it was horrible!

(ok, i'll stop.)

American Apparel and Jeanne-Claude (deangulberry), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

ariel pink was the most disastrous show i booked in 2004. but that i will blame on the crazy-as-fuck soundman. i really do love this record, though.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

you guys gotta hear the remastered 'worn copy'.. in march i believe.
shit knocks so epically IMHO, its incredible.

noizem duke (noize duke), Thursday, 13 January 2005 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

His website is mega classic:

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow... I've been listening to samples and I'm hooked. I never liked that rat bastard Gary Wilson, but this is great. You can get a copy of "Worn Copy," his forthcoming(?) release, here:

http://www.rhystop.net/products.html

It's only $8, but I'd have to sign up for a Paypal account. argh. think it's worth it?

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 27 January 2005 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

it's just as good as Doldrums, if not better???
paw tracks is re-releasing it this year, tho... remastered if that means anything to you.

Snappy (sexyDancer), Thursday, 27 January 2005 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

sold. i just ordered it... i'm sorry, bank account.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 27 January 2005 05:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"Interesting Results" alone is worth $8.

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 27 January 2005 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

so is "Credit"

huh, this video has some great 80s shots in it.

Magic City (ano ano), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

this is classic! his mtv music video award is secured

Rizz (Rizz), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

too bad paw=tracks isn't a subsidized fake indie label so that it could get shown on M2

noizem duke (noize duke), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

i find it kinda tedious after awhile

zach faver, Tuesday, 15 February 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

But isn't that the exact point he decides "hey, i'll pull out a marker and draw on my face!"?

Magic City (ano ano), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

:O

I find this all seriously addictive. I'm still hooked on it.

Errata: "Interesting Results" isn't on Worn Copy, but rather on House Arrest (see also "Every Night I Die at Miyagi's").

sleep (sleep), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 07:19 (twenty years ago)

probably more charitable than my initial reaction. gonna prolly piss you guys off, but i think a clean-up plus some collaboration would be beneficial. sorry.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 07:25 (twenty years ago)

You're fired.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 07:54 (twenty years ago)

bbbbbut who's gonna write some shitty blog nobody reads?

(tho that review will be in print soon) (don't worry i didn't ask for money) (i'm talking about ETHICS)

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 08:06 (twenty years ago)

This is mathematics.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

hey man, just like, a dissenting voice, man. be cool, brother.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 08:12 (twenty years ago)

I'll just say that the synth breaks in "for kate.." (yes one at the moment in the video when he magick markers a tear on his face) is one of the deeper gestures in music in the past three generations, perhaps aproaching early picasso or cormac mccarthy, etc. YEAH. No post-facto overdub well wisher hacks are going to change that. NAILED IT.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

Having seen the video he totally reminds me of the creep in Silence of the Lambs, Kate's probably somewhere in a well underneath his house.

willem (willem), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

Fall recs, q lazarus, yeah.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

Kate's probably somewhere in a well underneath his house.

The video director sort of says this already by inserting shots of a bloody-faced woman, doesn't he? Anyway, I finally found the missing link between hstencil and John Shuttleworth. They both believe musicians could benefit from a bit of mic technique.

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

The video director sort of says this already by inserting shots of a bloody-faced woman, doesn't he?

Yes, that shot came as a confirmation.

willem (willem), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

Awesome, awesome album. I can't recommend it enough. It actually gives makes me make to investigate that genre - 'othersider music' - a lot more. Maybe I'm just an ignorant fuck tho.

Michael Dieter, Tuesday, 15 February 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

Having seen the video he totally reminds me of the creep in Silence of the Lambs

that was exactly the impression i got as well.

eman (eman), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

ah momus, quite clever, but you see, i was quite the early sebadoh-on-homestead fan. i don't mind lo-fi, when it's actually in service of music. and i am no slavish devotee to "good production."

"othersider music?" good god.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

from the courier-journal review of the first slint reunion show, with ariel pink opening:

"Opening act Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti was asked to leave the stage after five songs by a guy in the audience. Pink's best move all night was to accommodate him."

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 26 February 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

that's the saddest thing i've ever heard. is he playing at the New York shows?

poortheatre (poortheatre), Saturday, 26 February 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
man, I just saw Ariel Pink last night, & can confirm the courier-journal's assessment. It wasn't all bad: he amazingly recreates the sound of the albums through a modern PA system, & the songs (all three of them) pretty much grooved.

But he insisted on having a heavy, heavy echo effect on his voice, producing an incomprehensible mess which dominated the music as a whole. Why, why? He has such a good voice, & good lyrics. Why does he have to obscure them?

BTW, does anybody else detect a fair amount of Zappa in this guy's sound, especially on Worn Copy?

Eggzachly Huh? (Zach), Monday, 21 March 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

ten months pass...
shit, the wind is being taken out of my sails by yall to pay $8 to see him in portland tonight. SHOULD I GO? I HAVE NEVER HEARD HIM

dyanstic fgflvaori, Sunday, 12 February 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

no!

i love his albums but when i saw him live last spring, i thought he was another opening act for his entire set and thought it sucked. it was the most spectacular failure to translate studio music into live music i have ever witnessed. my use of the word "spectacular" may imply that at least it was exciting and interesting to watch him fail, but that is not at all what i'm trying to communicate. it was so dull. you'd be better served by using the time you would have spent at the show getting super-stoned and putting on his records.
