Funk-disco fight! Chic gets the most respect, better bass-lines, smoother groove, but the Sunshine Band had more funk, great horn section and in my opinion, were more fun. Thoughts?

Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards were the Beatles of Disco music .

Nothing touches I Want Your Love.

Nothing.

KC & the Sunshine Mooks never came up with anything as utterly sublime as "Le Freak". So Chic wins, of course.

Aww man..."Keep It Comin' Love" has gotta be one of my fav. disco singles, plus KC was there at the beginning, but overall honors must go to Chic. That freakin chicken-scratch guitar is KILLER, and they possess the superior groove. Bonus points for the cynicism of their songs...yowsah, yowsah, yowsah.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 22 October 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

KC & the Sunshine Band seemed like a much sillier band, whereas Chic were cool.

Chic are indeed the Beatles of disco, I'm just sorry I didn't come up with that term myself.

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 22 October 2004 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i just misread 'chic' as 'clinic'...

koogs (koogs), Friday, 22 October 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

This is about as much of a mismatch as TS: Sex Pistols vs Slaughter & the Dogs or Shangri-Las vs Bewitched. Chic are one of the greatest bands EVER.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 22 October 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually that sounds like I think KC & the Sunshine Band were rubbish, which isn't at all the case, I just think they were distinctly minor talents.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 22 October 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

They did come up with 'Baby, Give It Up'. I could never completely dismiss anyone who created such a tune.

Sex Pistols vs Slaughter $ the Dogs is about right

What did you do in the war, Dadaismus? (Dada), Friday, 22 October 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Chic, of course, but I don't think the comparison is that all far-fetched. Like Chic, the Sunshine Band was one of the few truly great BANDS of disco, with a very identifiable groove and sound. Surely as important to the Miami sound & scene as Chic was to NYC. The horns, the Caribbean percussion -- even the silliest KC song would almost always have this hypnotic boil bubbling underneath. Plus, they achieved massive, superstar-level popularity, and were a red-hit live act (if I remember my Midnight Special correctly). Bet they sold more records than Chic. In other words, uh-huh, I like it.

briania (briania), Friday, 22 October 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, "red-hit".

briania (briania), Friday, 22 October 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Unfortunately KC is also a Republican scumbag who plays at Dubya fundraisers so Chic win this argument by default.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 22 October 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Cocaine etc

x-post

KC

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 22 October 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course, the Repub scumbag without the Sunshine Band is more useless than Harold Melvin without the Blue Notes.

briania (briania), Friday, 22 October 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

KC & The Sunshine were fun and all, but Chic win simply for the basslines of "Le Freak" and "Good Times". Simply monstrous are those basslines.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 22 October 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Those basslines deserved better songs (I lie, 'Good Times' is great at least). Chic leave me apathetic at times.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 22 October 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Chic/KC = Zep/Sab. "Get Down Tonight" is a call to riot in the streets.

dave q, Friday, 22 October 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I was lying, CHIC. And Sabbath suck too.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 22 October 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Chic=Beatles, KC=Dave Clark 5. I love KC's "Boogie Shoes," "Miss B Theme," many others. Very good indeed. But Chic wins for worldview. Their side projects--Sheila B. and Devotion, Fonzi Thornton, Sister Sledge, etc.--are usually quite awesomely good as well. "Real People" is one of my touchstone '80s records. Nile and 'Nard and Tony Thompson (why do the good ones have to die so young?) are the equal of any rhythm section, anywhere, anytime. And the backward guitar solo in Sheila B. and Devotion's "Mayday," which I've been listening to lately, is unbelievable. Chic.

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Friday, 22 October 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Those basslines deserved better songs (I lie, 'Good Times' is great at least). Chic leave me apathetic at times.

Ah, but "Good Times" begat "Rapper's Delight" and, later, "Another One Bites The Dust".
Which is no bad thing. More points for the Chic team.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 22 October 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha there are songs better than "Good Times" hahahahahahahahaha

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 22 October 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Clams on the half-shell. And roller skates! (Roller skates!)

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 22 October 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

And Sabbath suck too.

You should be hit with a flying brick for that.
