BRIAN WILSON is set to release the legendary ’GOOD VIBRATIONS’ as a single next month.

Released on November 29 through Nonesuch Records, the track will be the first single proper from Wilson’s recently-completed ‘lost’ album ‘Smile’.

Umm, why? The remake is the only track that is unarguably less good than the original (the others you can argue about)...

Also, the single "Wonderful" made the charts. Presumably this was an improper single...

Because it's the one most people know and will hum on the bus and everything and all that, I suppose.

The new "GV" wouldn't work as a single. It makes perfect sense in the context of SMiLE - and that additional Indian war chant at the end is typical Wilsonian genius - but really it needs the Mike Love lyrics to work, both scansion-wise and pop-wise. So it ends up sounding a bit awkward, although I can understand why this would be a preferable option to having to legally negotiate with Mr Love to use his lyrics.

It's true, people will stumble when they hum.

Haha I didn't even notice the verses were different until I read this thread.

...disingenuous?

Maybe Love was right when he said his lines made the whole song. Dontcha just hate that?

I'm sure it will do about as well as Prince's re-release of the re-make of "1999." They never learn.

He wouldn't have to. As it's out there, as long as it is more or less the same arrangement, there is no 'veto' right of the author...

Mike Love is credited as co-author on the new 'Good Vibrations' too...

Alba (Alba), Friday, 22 October 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

He is called Michael Love this time.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 22 October 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, that was a nice touch.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 22 October 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello's first sentence OTM.

J (Jay), Friday, 22 October 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it is a kind of stupid idea.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 22 October 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope the B-side is a revamped 'George Fell Into His French Horn'.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 22 October 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Retitled 'I Pushed Michael Into A French Horn'.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 22 October 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Never Learn Not To Michael Love?

seven years pass...

even though the good vibrations disc of the smile sessions box will inevitably be the one that everyone listens to the least, still some amazing, fun stuff to get lost in. was just listening and there's a part where it sounds like one of the flute players is like "heyyy, maybe i can slip a little bit of 'Bolero' in here."

eleven years pass...

81 today...I'm in a middle school with pretty receptive kids, so I've been able to talk about Wilson and play this old video for them (rotary, so a few classes):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apBWI6xrbLY

I prefaced it each time with 30 seconds of Leon Theremin.

(Grievously wrong: searching "Good Vibrations" on YouTube returns Marky Mark at the top.)

I heard it in public over the weekend (the BB song, not Marky Mark). Somehow it sill makes your ears prick up, as if hearing it for the first time, even over a PA in a crowded restaurant...

I think it remains an astonishing record, one of those over-played songs I never really get tired of.
