more complete than you would expect, but its also his weakest..

Couldn't disagree more SITP. He sounds weak, and he frequently dissappears into the music but I think it's his strongest in song-writing terms since 'Roman Candle' and some of that music he dissappears into is more beautiful than anything on 'XO'.
I loved it.

can't see how one could place this above the supreme realization of either/or

it's very good. it's not as good as either/or but it's better than figure 8 and about on par with x/o.

what's the story on production with this one? It doesn't sound very Brion to me but there are a few flourishes here and there. It'd be interesting if Brion produced it all post-facto, and he decided to try some new heavier / o'rourke+albini vibe I'm getting.

I like this a lot. The point for me isn't so much where it ranks as that it's a real Elliott Smith album, not just some posthumous pastiche. On first few listens, a bunch of songs jump out at me, nice melodies, interesting production, his singing is as pretty as ever. Good record. Wish there were going to be more.

I love the new one as well. I connect most with it than any of his other albums, and I've been listening to him since "Either/Or".

There's just something about the fact that it's the last Elliott album we'll get, but also, the songs are wiiicked. He gets loud like Heatmiser (Don't Go Down), quiet like "Roman Candle" (The Last Hour), richly produced like "Figure 8" (King's Crossing, probably my all time favourite Elliot song). And listening to "Fond Farewell", well ..... it really sounds like a send-off.

As to "Basement 2", I really enjoyed it. There's some excellent stuff on there ("High Times", "Riot Coming", "Amanda Ceciliua", etc). It's really awesome, and if you're looking for it (and any other unreleased Elliott) check -

Enjoy !

yes, basement 2 is excellent, i'd be surprised if they don't give these an official release, they sound no less finished than either/or.

They should really juat add some more of the unreleased demos from the "Basement" sessions, like "Stickman" and "Suicide Machine", then maybe release it as a double.

Or hey, why not an Elliott boxset ? Indie snobs love that shit.

I want one

Actually, I'm just listening to a few additional "Basement Demos" that have leaked, and "Stickman" is god, but I highly reccomend "see You In Heaven". Very, very awesome instrumental (kind of like "Kiwimaddog" but with organ and electric guitars.

Check out www.elliottsmithbsides.com for the additional demos
