Nothing like i imagined from the name

Felix da housecoat. Why didn't someone shake me by the scruff of the neck and order me to buy this album. I was unfortunate enough to hear Felix do a DJ set (or something) at Trash Club and it were a little dull to say the least. but this album is terrific.

My real question tho is about pointless pre-conceptions. I have NEVER heard any Felix (actually i think i heard a single on R1 once, but i wasn't LISTENING) but from the name and the name alone i imagined it to be some sort of experimental super-speed garage type thing. I think it's just the word "da" in the artists name. Has this happened to you? Also, why on earth did i imagine such a completely wrong style of music?

Surely a more apt complaint would be "Fucking hell! I was expecting some house music and got fifteen rewrites of "I'm In Love With A German Film Star" by The Passions!"

(NB this is not a complaint)

Stereolab. Peel mentioned them in the preamble to his show back in 1990 or so, and I immediately thought "Sheffield ravey nonsense". I don't know quite how I could've thought this now. I mean, they're *so* Stereolab.

So you thought they were "Sheffield Ravey Nonsense" and decided: "I must run down to the shops and check them out immediately!" ... Right?

What about Joy Division? Did you know to what the name referred before you heard them? And did you hear them and then ask, "My God! Who is this?" or did you find one of their LPs and say, "Cool album cover for a pop band." ?

I still find the names "Joy Division" and "New Order" and even "The Dead Kennedys" a bit unsettling when I actually think about what they mean, which I guess is what was intended. The name "Joy Division" seems particularly odious.

...And They Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead is much more a Godspeed You Black Emperor! type of band name. Tetrezine sounds much more threatening then the band is in reality.

I've never heard the Dismemberment Plan, but I'm sure the reality cannot match the impressions the name conjures up.

Massive Attack. When I first heard of them I thought they would be some seizure-inducing big beat assault.

Tesla. Thought they'd be electronic. Maybe I even thought they'd sound a bit like OMD.

"So you thought they were "Sheffield Ravey Nonsense" and decided: "I must run down to the shops and check them out immediately!" ... Right? "

Not in 1990, Tim.

I thought International Noise Conspiracy would be so kind of bizzaro German IDM click click click music.

I was pleasantly surprised when I heard "Smash it up."
