i mean, he's so stoned in this song, and the way those weird little echoey hisses pop up in the background...

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 22 October 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I would greatly like to hear it.

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

turn on the radio!

it's frickin' amazing....excellent song...the verses are strange...all burying bodies and stuff which is weird cuz the hook is such a club/party hook....

I'm at work!

This is absolutely a great song, Mannie going back to his more gutter production aesthetic, sounds more like "Ha" than like "Shine" or something, more minimal and dirty. UNLV's version of Go DJ isn't as good, but you might want to check it out too. I like the video too.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

good song. i always thought it was weird hearing him shout out his dj. i'm used to hearing that in underground hip hop

are we missing out on our commercial/southern hip hop now that ethan and jess don't post as much (do they and i just don't recognize their names?) or is it just sort of stale right now?

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

ethan and jess left, sadly.

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

read blogs, JaXoN.

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

was wayne the one with the drug problem from cash money....he looks like he's really aged alot in the video....he's got that wierd sallow/saggy skin yet young look that i associate with pictures of people that have had drug problems...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

BG was on heroin.

I'd say there's still a bunch of hot southern h-h this year for sure. Houston's finally getting its due too.

are we really supposed to think lil wayne sounds like jay-z now? c'mon....

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Saturday, 23 October 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

a couple weeks ago I was in a bathroom stall next to a guy who was quietly rapping "Go DJ" (all 3 verses) to himself, I don't think he had headphones on or anything. it was kind of awesome.

the use of space in this song is a little unnerving, especially when he leaves a bunch of bars open at the end of every verse to go "thi-thi-thi-thi-thi-thi-thi-thi-thi-thi-thi-thi-this is the carter!"

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 23 October 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't listened to the whole album yet, but this is an incredible chorus and track. his flow is so meandering. the texture and pitch of his voice is here for half a verse, there for a quarter of a verse. then the weird this-is-the this-is-the that sounds totally out of place.

"a lot more rich and a whole lot smarter"
i kind of don't dislike the jay influence. i def prefer the direction the other hbs have gone.
on the prefix mixtape he's rapping like jay pretty damn well over jay beats. he nails the cadence over moment of clarity, and his accent gives a nice angle to this weird crossover flow.

p$, Saturday, 23 October 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

sterling, you mean "tha heat"? "i shoot your arm, leg, leg..." etc? that's my 2nd favourite, after b.m jr.

as for "go dj" it's not a favourite, by any stretch. i'd say it's the weakest of the four opening tracks. i think i drunkenly tried to explain my love of bm j.r on ilx a couple of weeks ago - never a good idea :-( That "sweet potato ass nigga, you lemon meringue apple custard.." bit is definitely my musical highlight of the year - it's so weird and grotesque and creepy. that song has been on endless repeat chez weasel.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 23 October 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Appreciation for Go DJ increased in club context, FYI.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Saturday, 23 October 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

it really doesn't sound like a hit to me, it's so slow, I wonder if DJs would play it so much if it didn't go "GO DJ"

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 23 October 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno, it REALLY gets people moving. my favorite part is when he talks about homo niggas getting AIDS in the ass

\(^o^)/ (Adrian Langston), Saturday, 23 October 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, that's very charming.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 23 October 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah tha heat -- its so homoerotic and damn the bit with the silencer.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 23 October 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think its just the chorus Al, what really comes off well is what dlk described - "spacey keyboard sounds but not evil and plastic like old mf or gay and hollow like lil jon's, they're just like neutral spacey like the asteroid level in starfox."

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 24 October 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

i dunno, it REALLY gets people moving. my favorite part is when he talks about homo niggas getting AIDS in the ass

classic single

i got nothin (deej), Sunday, 25 October 2009 02:27 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i still get real hyped when this comes on the radio

everybody loves am0n (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 25 October 2009 03:55 (sixteen years ago)

he did a ridiculously good performance of it at a BET awards that i wish i could find - even then he was bucking the million man hypeman trend

everybody loves am0n (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 25 October 2009 03:56 (sixteen years ago)

yeah per this thread i didn't like this song that much at first but it's aged really well and if you ask me he hasn't made as good a solo single since. one of those songs where the single edit is a whole different take so when you hear the album version it almost sounds weird to hear a different inflection on certain words.

lol @ me and cankles rehearsing what would become our basic relationship for the next 5 years

President Deez (some dude), Sunday, 25 October 2009 05:41 (sixteen years ago)

"fireman" was a good sequel but a lot of times i find it to be actively annoying - i think "hustler musik" is up there w "go dj" & depending on my mood i might say that it's better

he was such a good rapper during the carter era - he sounded like such a brat & had so much swagger - "go dj" is such a weird and arresting song, it's kinda sad that people are actively trying to make weird rap now instead of songs that are weird in the way that "go dj" is - the second verse is alone would sound so out of place if this song dropped new today

everybody loves am0n (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 25 October 2009 05:53 (sixteen years ago)

so many flows on this song
