What do we think of the Lil Jon single?

I think it's obvious that it isn't as good as "Get Low" but there's something interesting about the basic bass riff which sounds strangely round and bouncey.

You can download the song by going here.

Also I like those Teedra Moses songs.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it quite a bit. It's got the same kind of vicious punch that you hear in "Might Getcha".
'Course I just got the c+s Mississippi today (though I've yet to spin it) so that just may be where my mind is.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't like his "YOU SCARED! YOU SCARED!" songs as much as his "SHAKE THAT ASS! SHAKE THAT ASS!" songs but I still enjoy this. He's still the King Midas of music right now.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

PUT YOUR ASS AGAINST THE WALL, miccio! NOW STOP! YEAH! WIGGLE WITH IT!

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

and they say I'm anti-dance by principle.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

could that site have been more annoying? fucking email, bday, zip code and uncheck the mailing list for every song! guh

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps it's telling that I prefer his "kick your ass" songs to his "shake your ass" songs...

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I continue to hold that crunk is black hair metal for the coming apocalypse, which means that I love it.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

ONLY BITCHES TALK SHIT ONLY BITCHES TALK SHIT ONLY BITCHES TALK SHIT THAT'S WHY WE BUSTIN' YO SHIT!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 22 October 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

and my favorite hair metal bands are the pop ones! haha!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 22 October 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

REP YO CITY!

autovac (autovac), Friday, 22 October 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

could that site have been more annoying? fucking email, bday, zip code and uncheck the mailing list for every song! guh

Well it actually could have been, I mean its not like they make you verify the email address. Frankly if they're going to be just giving away music I have no problem entering stupid information.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 22 October 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

best part of this song: the weird metallic echo at the beginning of Lil Scrappy's verse. also, the beginning of the video where the bass/whistle riff plays for a second before the drums kick in, which as far as I can tell isn't in the non-video version of the song. all in all, though: zzzz.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 23 October 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

there is nothing better than this single right now.

DVD (dickvandyke), Saturday, 23 October 2004 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

what kind of new single is that? Hasnt "what u gonna do" already been on "Crunk&Disorderly" album, which is like half a year old? and i must agree with you, its great. looking forward to seeing what itll do with Billboard chart.

karl76 (karl76), Saturday, 23 October 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah it's an old song but now it's the first single/video from Crunk Juice now.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 23 October 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm kinda guessing the next one will be a club banger, "Get Low"-style. He said in those "in the studio" preview articles this album was going to be for the ladeez. Maybe since crunk is black hair-metal he decided to follow the rock radio rule where the first single is throwaway for the macho chowderheads who need to know he's still a real man, then he gives the pop audience what they want.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 23 October 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

This single tells me that Lil Jon is still a real man.

My brain tells me that although I enjoy this right now, when the backlash comes I will find myself at a loss for defences other than "miccio made me buy it" and "uhh... booty"

Dave M. (rotten03), Saturday, 23 October 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm especially looking forward to the Ice Cube/Bad Brains collabo.

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 23 October 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard the Ice Cube song, it was ok but Ice Cube was sucking it up.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Saturday, 23 October 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ice Cube song is great!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 23 October 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean "Roll Call" right? I think the beat/chorus is excellent but Ice Cube...I donno. His voice is still great but I really wish he would bring some of that old lyricism to it...more black revolutionary, less, "I may be old but I can do party rhymes too!" shit.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 24 October 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah but he sounds pretty funny doing it. I'm not sure how successful black revolutionary poses would be over that groove anyway, although I guess we'd have to see it in action to know either way.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 24 October 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Normally I'd find it horribly contrived but if there's one guy that ALWAYS made that shit convincing it'd be Ice Cube. I mean, I'm not advocating him to do a crunk version of "The Message" or something, just that the party rhymes don't sound very natural.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 24 October 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Y'ALL NIGGAS OVER THERE, Y'ALL NIGGAS AIN'T SHIT
Y'ALL HOES OVER THERE, Y'ALL HOES AIN'T SHIT

that said, the single is the same song he's been making for the last couple years.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Sunday, 24 October 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

you killed the Ramones, didn't you Rollie. didn't you.

Dave M. (rotten03), Sunday, 24 October 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on rollie "Get Low" sounds nothing like "Yeah!" which sounds nothing like "Play No Games" sounds nothing like "Get some Crunk in Yr System" or "Be Real" or "FILA" etc.etc.etc.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 24 October 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

point being that's the same criticism that was levelled at the neptunes and timbaland etc. etc. etc. that is only partly true and because its only partly true is largely irrelevent to overall greatness.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 24 October 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe it's the fact that Lil Jon is a rapper as well as a producer that incites Rollie to use a test he might not apply to, say, The Neptunes. Most rappers can if necessary manufacture diversity by ensuring they draft in Lil Jon *and* The Neptunes *and* Kanye West on production duties.

Ironically Lil Jon is possibly more diverse as a producer than as a rapper - eg. Teedra Moses's "You Better Tell Her" surprised me with its sweetness. I still think Usher's "Red Light" is his most far out moment (and it goes for like six minutes!) although it doesn't really work as a song.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 24 October 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

My version of Red Light goes for 4:48...were you just exaggerating the length? Anyway I think the production on "Red Light" is stunning.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 24 October 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

No you're right it's only 4:48 but the tracklisting on my Yeah single says 6:02! It does feel quite epic though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 24 October 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

the ice cube track is shit, mainly cos ice cube is shit, not lil jon, but prepare yourself for the original version of that duet done with none other than BAD BRAINS!

DVD (dickvandyke), Sunday, 24 October 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Basically EVERYWHERE I go, I have to suppress the need to scream ONLY BITCHES TALK SHIT ONLY BITCHES TALK SHIT ONLY BITCHES TALK SHIT THAT'S WHY WE BUSTIN' YO SHIT!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 October 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

david, you are pointing out exceptions to the rule. he's got a barrel full of beats like this. sometimes he'll make the EXACT same beat, like with that Petey Pablo song I've forgotten the name of and "Yeah".

people should be jerking off over 'real big' by mannie fresh. people used to level the same crit i give jon to this guy, but he's been handing out killer beats all year.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Monday, 25 October 2004 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Freek-A-Leek, Yeah! and Goodies essentially used the same formula - but they were all distinct songs, they were all successful and distinct interpretations of a singular formula. And also, apparently Lil Jon sold the beat to freek-a-leek and was never told by the studio that they would be using it, so he used it w/ Usher. Then Petey Pablo ran into him and told him that he had recorded over some of the beats Lil Jon had sold. So Lil Jon didn't even know about the double-use of it in the first place.

That kind of shit happens all the time though - but saying Lil Jon just makes the same beats over and over is ridiculous.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 25 October 2004 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

all of his singles are similar, is all i'm saying. is there any other producer that has existed on such a constant format in the national spotlight?

'no problem' is an awesome beat, btw.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Monday, 25 October 2004 05:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's pretty fair to say that even in the realm of hip hop super-producers that 'brand' their sound by re-using certain sounds and rhythms over and over in slight variations, Lil Jon's palette is pretty limited. I mean, even the Neptunes have more than one drum kit. LJ not only uses the same drums every time but the same two BPMs: the faster "Yeah"/"Get Low" club track, and the slower one for the dirges. he's definitely getting good at pulling out different sounds, like the "No Problem" synth, or dropping in and out the hi-hat at the perfect point in the song. but let's be real. these songs are all huge because they all sound essentially the same. and I'm not gonna shower him with praise every time he throws a tiny curveball.

(x-post)

Al (sitcom), Monday, 25 October 2004 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Al I agree that I don't think this song is any sort of sonic reinvention but the "they all sound the same" criticism is the same thing everyone said about the neptunes (except they would say "even timbaland switches up his sound" or whatever as a point of comparison). Its just an annoying criticism and I know that some day I'm going to be totally tired of the Lil Jon sound but its like a lot people are eager to jump on the "i always hated that guy" bandwagon.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 25 October 2004 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Gentlemen, gentlemen, gentlemen.
ONLY BITCHES TALK SHIT ONLY BITCHES TALK SHIT ONLY BITCHES TALK SHIT THAT'S WHY WE BUSTIN' YO SHIT!

Meanwhile, I've spent the evening listening to (among other things) Eric B's "Don't Sweat the Technique", BDP "By All Means Necessary", Wiley's "Treddin'" and Skee-Lo's album (surprisingly good!). Harmonic!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 October 2004 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

king midas was the guy who walked around naked right?

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 25 October 2004 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

que?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 October 2004 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Anybody else want to hear Skee Lo's "I Wish" (Street Remix)?
It's a totally different song!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 October 2004 05:47 (twenty-one years ago)

by the way, anyone who thinks jon is making one hard single then going soft with the album is totally wrong.

i dont think jons beats all sound the same. jon just uses similar sounds the way dj premiers beats all have the same drum sounds.

DVD (dickvandyke), Monday, 25 October 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't know if anybody thinks he's "going soft," unless "get low" counts as soft.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 25 October 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

no, someone upthread said this was a red herring for the direction of the new album.

DVD (dickvandyke), Monday, 25 October 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, me, who noted that in several articles lil jon said the new album was going to be lots of club jams for the ladies. of course his version of "for the ladies" usually means shrieking at them to ejaculate. Not saying he's gone soft.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 25 October 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

LIL JON CAN NEVER GO SOFT! HE MAKES THE HARDEST SHIT HIP HOP HAS EVER HEARD! THE ONLY WAY IT COULD EVER GET HARDER IS IF HE WORKED WITH MOP BUT HE ALREADY DID THIS ON HIS SECOND ALBUM!

(sorry)

DVD (dickvandyke), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

what do we think about the lil jon-produced ice cube track "roll call", or the lil jon-produced mobb deep track "realest gangstaz"?

m. (mitchlnw), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

B?
U?0
U???y before everyone was on Lil Jon's dick, the best songs from Kings Of Crunk are the soft guitar-led slow jams towards the end of the cd.

Also. This song came out more than a year ago. It is a sick beat still, but compared to more recent stuff like "305 Anthem", "FILA", "Feel My Pain", "Gone", "Shorty Wanna Ride" it's not as good as it was if you know what i mean.

se17, Monday, 25 October 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

That first bit should say "as WW said a while back" but it went weird.

se17, Monday, 25 October 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i dont get how it came out on that compilation a year back and its only now included on his album.

DVD (dickvandyke), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

omg i totally forgot that the best part of this song is the way he says "buddy" at the end.

WE REAL BUDDAY!

Al (sitcom), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"roll call" is pretty heavy

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 29 October 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i dont think crunk can get better than this, this year.
