Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Saturday, 23 October 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh, new album? when's it coming out in the US?

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Saturday, 23 October 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

November 8th. It's excellent. Self-consciously slower than anything they've ever done. Lots of Pink Floyd moments, and a surprising amount of 4AD Lush-ness. Hopefully it'll inspire some of the rock critics around here to look beyond the cover of Revolver and embrace a metal band with real ambition.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Saturday, 23 October 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm. maybe i'll get it and not force my girlfriend to listen to it as a birthday present.

i am totally looking forward to it.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Sunday, 24 October 2004 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Funny enough, it's tame enough that I was actually considering forcing my girlfriend to listen to it -- gotta choose my battles carefully, you know...

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Sunday, 24 October 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The last half of "The Dead Stare" off of Below The Lights sounds like Circle. I was hoping they'd go all-out with the krautrockin' for this new one, but hey.

original bgm, Monday, 25 October 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i want more like the first track on below the lights

ryan (ryan), Monday, 25 October 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

True, true. The rest of that album was kind of a letdown after the first two tracks.

original bgm, Monday, 25 October 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

wasn't it "The Crossing" that sounded like Circle?

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Monday, 25 October 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i got this today, i'm liking it a lot so far.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been listening to this a lot. I guess nobody else really liked it?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

I turned on the TV at like 5PM a few weeks ago, and a freaking Enslaved video was on!
The title track in ISA. Lame video, very boring (the band seems like fun-loving guys, so why they have to be so BORING with their video, I don't know)
Anyhoo, I have to admit that I wasn't too fond of the song. Now, it might be lousy TV-speakers ruining some of it, but the clean singing bits really put me off.
And by gum do I LOVE Enslaved!
Mardraum's still just about the best Norwegian metal album of the 2000s (particularly the Voivod/Anacrusis-song)

I should dust off Monumension, which I for some reason never played much.

Øystein (Øystein), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

i'm not really able to get into this one yet. this and the last one (which i liked) seem like steps down from "monumension."

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 01:33 (twenty years ago)

Well, I think that like Nothingface this will be the album that cracks the shell. It moves over the mall without setting foot inside. Below the Lights was truly great, though, for me it cleared up the unresolved messes of monumension.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

Monumension remains my favorite for Enslaved so far. ISA has a bunch of great parts here and there, but overall is kinda boring.

Avi (Avi), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

Eld remains the best!

Haven't heard a lot from Arcturus lately - anything new on that front?

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

This is the only band my local hard rock station has ever introduced me to after several years (although I guess I don't have the dial on that station very often).

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

The new singer isn't the guy who did that mock-Arabic wailing on Masquerade Infernale is it? He ruined a perfectly good album.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Shooooooooooooooooooooegazers!

That's what I thought when I heard the Jesu record!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

This is the only band my local hard rock station has ever introduced me to after several years (although I guess I don't have the dial on that station very often).

It's playing on Sirius' Hard Attack, too, which means it'll chart, whatever that means.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Thursday, 24 February 2005 04:17 (twenty years ago)

I still haven't heard Isa. Everything I've read about it makes it sound like something I would love. There is a lot of new stuff I want to hear. I kinda want to hear that Comity album and the Mouth Of The Architect album, but I'm getting really really leery of stuff that gets compared to Isis/Neurosis/etc. I want to hear that Frantic Bleep album too. And I want to hear the new Origin. And maybe Om. But maybe not. I love that Blood Red Throne album. And the new Immolation. Um, I like lots of stuff.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 24 February 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

oh, and jesu. i want to hear that too. i wish i was rich.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 24 February 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

That Comity album pretty much sucks. The idea of blasts seperated by long taffy strains is good, but doesn't work on their badly titled record.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Thursday, 24 February 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

Scott, as some kind person flagged up the other day, the Om record is Cope's album of the month at the moment so you can stream the whole thing at the Head Heritage HQ. Sounds pretty hot to me.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 24 February 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

The enslaved record grew on me, at first I thought it didnt have enough UMPFFF, but with more spins, the nuances came out. The JESU record rules...it's like Codeine  and Sunn 0)))), it's awesome a wall of sound.

The last deftones record was total SHOEGAZE.

ddb (ddb), Thursday, 24 February 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

dig below the lights a fair sight more than isa. i mean isa has its place and all, but it has too many bit which are just self-consciously slooooow. i really like how below the lights consistently grooves like a motherfucker, has ambient slow bits here and there for good measure, but speeds up whenever necessary to lend variety and general excitement to the songs.

Charlie Howard, Monday, 12 October 2009 10:23 (sixteen years ago)

Isa is the first time Enslaved made a record that was a disappointment compared to the one before it. Lots of this can be chalked up to the loss of drummer Dirge Rep.

Nate Carson, Monday, 12 October 2009 21:56 (sixteen years ago)

Nate, that is exactly my reaction. though i've since downloaded it again and it's grown on me a little.

LIVIN' IN A JAM SPREAD (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 02:35 (sixteen years ago)

i never listen to enslaved. i don't know why. i like them fine. what's wrong with me? there is a lot to like in all their incarnations. sorry, nothing to add!

scott seward, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 02:53 (sixteen years ago)

one month passes...

was listening to Ruun this morning. Underrated imo. Thoughts? Enslaved does great title tracks. I was almost tempted to start (or search for) a thread about great title tracks.

Buck Utah (rockapads), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 16:56 (sixteen years ago)

Ruun really grew on me in a way that Isa never did. That may be because I bought it on vinyl...

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 24 November 2009 21:02 (sixteen years ago)

i think it was you who mentioned the drum triggers used on Isa in another thread, and I hadn't really noticed how bad the drums sound on that album until reading that. now when i listen to it i don't hear anything BUT the bad drums. :( damn you!

i wish they would re-record Isa, because there is some epic great shit on there.

Buck Utah (rockapads), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 22:20 (sixteen years ago)

I've just got their latest, having hardly heard them before, and I think it's really really good.

Enslaved album was killah

acoleuthic, Sunday, 26 December 2010 05:45 (fifteen years ago)

This band is frigging amazing. That is all.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 29 January 2013 04:50 (thirteen years ago)

No doubt, though I consider Isa to be one of the few missteps in their entire catalog.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 04:54 (thirteen years ago)

I've never heard it! Just reviving a band-themed thread... Still working my way through it all, but I just got Monumension today and it's really doing it for me. And Eld blew me away last week. And Vikingligr Veldi and Hordanes Land the week or so before that. I think it's time for Frost next.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 29 January 2013 04:58 (thirteen years ago)

I just have Ruun and Vertebrae and like them both a lot.

hibernaculum (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 05:13 (thirteen years ago)

They're all great. My only issue with ISA is in the production. The songs/vision are fantastic.

I'm a huge fan of the Mardraum / Monumension / Below the Lights era.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 06:41 (thirteen years ago)

Eld has the weird combination of awesome drumming and a completely shit drum sound.

Siegbran, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 07:36 (thirteen years ago)

haha nate totally in character here!

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 07:58 (thirteen years ago)

Eld is my fave for sure

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 07:58 (thirteen years ago)

I remember playing Ethica Odini to Siegbran in soundrop and his reaction was "what happened to these guys :( "

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 08:00 (thirteen years ago)

Eld is amazing, but I kinda agree with Siegbran. Then again I hated Isa at first and eventually came around to it.

Enslaved thx for do Real Metal!!!!

am0n, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 15:19 (thirteen years ago)

Eld is their best one IMO

dog latin, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 15:21 (thirteen years ago)

I can see myself listening to Eld with great frequency, but Vikingligr Veldi... I feel like that's gotta be #1. It may even be my favorite of the early '90s Norwegian canon (that I've heard).

Clarke B., Tuesday, 29 January 2013 15:24 (thirteen years ago)

I'm a huge fan of the Mardraum / Monumension / Below the Lights era.

Interestingly enough, these are literally the only three albums of theirs I haven't heard. Given your endoresement, might be time to fix that.

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 15:39 (thirteen years ago)

What did ppl think of the EP that was released for free through the Scion website?

hibernaculum (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

Got Vertebrae for €0.20 today in a library sale. I know I like Isa so... nice.

I've been in an Enslaved mood lately. Re-listened to Eld, Isa, Below the Lights and now Monumension. Great band. Need to catch up with the post-Isa stuff, I think.

"what is the best enslaved album" is a question i have been trying to answer for at least five years

Top 3?

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Friday, 7 June 2013 15:06 (twelve years ago)

vikingligr veldi
eld
monumension

you can't go wrong with any of them though for real. even when i've thought a new enslaved record was boring i'd listen to it later and it'd turn out to be 100 percent awesome

^^^ Yeah with post-Isa Enslaved I seem to be in this cycle where I hear the new album, thinks it's okay but nothing too exciting... and then later I realize its great.

Listening to Axioma Ethica Ghostdini uh Odini right now though and i'm thoroughly enjoying it.

On CD, I mean, the LP is readily available.

The Fortnightly Intruder (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 11:39 (eight years ago)

Has that album ever been remastered?

Siegbran, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 12:31 (eight years ago)

Looks like all the single disc VV reissues were represses but not remastered. Just discovered there's a 2cd VV/Hordanes Land reissue that claims to be remastered from 2004 on Candlelight though.

The Fortnightly Intruder (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 14:21 (eight years ago)

Christ on a bike do those original pressings really go for the crazy prices that Ebay/Discogs suggests? I’ve got moving boxes full of black and doom metal CDs I bought in the early 90s.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 16:52 (eight years ago)

Dude it's a crazy world out there. I remember seeing some Abigor original CD go for ridiculous money. I mean I like Abigor but not for $88 and it's a CD who gives a shit
