Greatest Trumpet Melody Ever?

The new-age provenance of this tune might provoke intense indifference in these parts, but someone has to dredge those becalmed waters for the benefit of all, so here's one gem: Mark Isham's luminescent comprovising on Upon the Wings of Night off of Patrick O'Hearn's Indigo album. It feels like the dawn of a dewy new world. Or the first sighting of a battalion of descending angels. Or something.

A close second choice might be Passion track on Peter Gabriel's Last Temptation soundtrack, though there Jon Hassell shares the soundstage with NFAK's firmament-ripping Hindustani vocals.

Name your favourite trumpet tune irrespective of age, duration or genre.

the dynasty themetune!!

Technically a cornet though, not a trumpet.

The flumps' theme tune is great too, although technichally that is a flumpet rather than a trumpet. Pity, it would've got my vote.

Mark Isham on Van Morrison's 'Dweller on the Threshold.'

Well, Coronation Street has a great cornet melody too really. In that it manages to perfectly capture the feeling of withering, painful weariness you get from actually watching the programme.

"Tight Like This," Louis Armstrong.

Burr (Burr), Monday, 25 October 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god, where do I start ... Herb Alpert's "A Taste of Honey," Cliff Nobles' "The Horse," Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up," and the easy-to-miss-because-the-bassline-is-so-famous horn chart on Sly's "If You Want Me to Stay."

Miles, "Shhh/Peaceful."

OTM.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

He didn't write it, but i love the way Louis Armstrong plays "Memories of You," and it really has that quintessential 'old-timey trumpet melody' feel to it.

I'd also like to shout out Fanfare for the Common Man, though it includes various brass instruments.

Three more:

Love, "Maybe the People Would Be the Times or Between Clark and Hilldale" (am I remembering the title right?)

Adam Ant, "Desperate But Not Serious" (most underrated trumpets ever)

Jay & the Techniques, "Keep the Ball Rolling" (amazing trumpet riff, too bad the rest of the song is so corny)

three years pass...

I went to a recital for trumpet and pipe organ yesterday. (The trumpeter, Mary Bowden, also had a flugelhorn). I walked away wondering, is there any olde classical music composed for the trumpet that DOESN'T sound like fanfare? She played "Someone to Watch Over Me" so I know stuff like that exists.

I played trumpet as a kid, and really wanted to play this, but never could properly
