Ashlee Simpson on SNL

OMG, I just came home and put on the tv a little while ago so I didn't see her first performance, but a few minutes ago, they came back from commercial and introduced her for her 2nd song...

so the band starts playing "Pieces Of Me" and she's doing this goofy "sexy" dance, and the vocals start, but they're pre-recorded she misses the cue completely and isn't mouthing the words or anything, and she's very visibly embarrassed and kind of dances around a little more, and the pre-recorded vocals fade out but she never starts singing, and the band just keeps playing on, and she sheepishly walks offstage and they cut to commercial in the middle of the first chorus.

did anyone else see this!? it was one of the greatest trainwrecks I've ever seen on live TV.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i finally heard an ashlee simpson song! in italy! it was boring! she has a big nose! chuck is on crack!

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

also where do they get those studio hacks who dress up like blink 182?

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Just caught it. The rest of the band did handle things pretty well to their credit.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

just now at the end of the show when they all wave to the camera while the credits roll, Ashlee was looking so embarrassed and I think mouthing the words "I'm sorry" to the camera, and Amy Poehler and Tina Fey were hugging and consoling her.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

wait so was the plan for her to take over from the prerecorded vocals or was she going to lipsynch the whole song?

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Sunday, 24 October 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

hard to say. I think that she was probably supposed to just lipsynch (the pre-recorded track was very loud at first, definitely not just 'backing' for live vocals), but I guess after that went awry, they faded out the vocal track hoping she'd just pick up and start singing, but she just kinda gave up on salvaging it.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 24 October 2004 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, I hope I don't sound like I'm gloating or condemning anyone who lipsynchs, her singles are lame but she seems nice enough on her show and I think she's kinda hot. but this was just such a hilariously grand failure that I had to post about it.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 24 October 2004 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Just heard about this myself. I'm more quietly amused than anything else.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 24 October 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Saw it. Wasn't surprised. I mean... Ashlee Simpson sucks people. Anyone who'd lip synch on fuckin' SNL? Please.

Now the Dave Matthews Band is playing on the '95 rerun episode. They don't sound so bad at all!

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 24 October 2004 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn! Missed this. Would've love to see it. Do you think they will show the fuck up on the re-run or just edit it out?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 24 October 2004 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, you have to hand it to the band. After whatsername walked off, they gleefully smirked at each other (obviously trying not to burst out laughing) and carried on like the professionals they were hired to be.

Jawdroppingly insulting both to band and audience how she announces at the end of the program, "Sorry! My band started playing the wrong song!"

Way to go, bitch, blame it on THEM. What a low down, incredibly shitty thing to do. As if any of this were their fault. Well, at least this is one disposable media cunt who will thankfully exit before her proverbial 15 minutes were even used up.

Lefty, Sunday, 24 October 2004 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

you seem kind of wound up about this, lefty.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Sunday, 24 October 2004 05:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Not really. I had never heard her before this program. I couldn't care less, but I really did find it amusing how those hired hand musicians reacted. I was smirking too.

But, really, they did all they could do to cover for her, She walked off. Then she blames them for being exposed as a lip-synching fraud. Seems really shitty for her to blame others for her own meltdown, particularly the band that's trying to cover her ass.

Lefty, Sunday, 24 October 2004 05:19 (twenty-one years ago)

when did she blame them? when would she have had the opportunity to do so? (or did she call a post-SNL press conference?)

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Sunday, 24 October 2004 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually that raises the question of whether the band did that on purpose. Maybe they weren't getting paid their fair shake?

xpost She blamed them when she said good night to the audience.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 24 October 2004 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

End of the show before credits rolled. She was standing there surrounded buy the cast and said this. Didn't you see it?

Lefty, Sunday, 24 October 2004 05:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't have a tv, i live vicariously through YOU

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Sunday, 24 October 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a pretty crappy excuse though - even if the band did play the wrong song, she should know her own repertoire enough to lipsynch along to it.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 24 October 2004 05:32 (twenty-one years ago)

but which dance does she do?

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Sunday, 24 October 2004 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Excerpt from a recent Lucky Magazine interview (thanks Jayne):

LM: What are your takes on lip-synching?

AS: I'm totally against it and offended by it. I'm going out to let my real talent show, not to just stand there and dance around. Personally, I'd never lip-synch. It's just not me.

omg wait until alex in nyc finds this thread!

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Sunday, 24 October 2004 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

She did kind of a hokey-pokey with the finger pointing move.

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Sunday, 24 October 2004 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

when does she insult the band?

amateur!!!st (deangulberry), Sunday, 24 October 2004 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe someone familiar with her repertoire (such as it is) can say for certain, but I got the impressiont hat the band was playing the proper/agreed upon song. It seemed like the wrong recorded vocal track then popped up. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what appeared to have happened.

Lefty, Sunday, 24 October 2004 05:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not going to read this thread. tell me what happened?

amateur!!!st (deangulberry), Sunday, 24 October 2004 05:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, first this band came out. Then the wrong tape. And, lessee, then hokey-pokey; media cunt storms off. Then Jandek came out and started singing. Yeah, Jandek, I think it was.

Eh, fuck, it's been a long week. I'm drunk and the events of the past 7 days are now all blurring together nicely.

Lefty, Sunday, 24 October 2004 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

hi dean--how do you post as me? i thought that wasn't possible because of registration issues.

i don't recall anyone explaining when she insulted the band before i asked. there was mention of her mouthing some kind of "i'm sorry" at the end but that's hardly the same thing.

I just noticed that Dean impersonated AaronHz on this thread and also one on the Noise Board (and for no good reason really!) and then had the sudden thought that maybe AaronHz has always just been an alternate persona of Dean's. Weird.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 24 October 2004 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, More in the Monitor reports more details:

Okay, so I'm watching Saturday Night Live. Ashlee Simpson does her first song, that Pieces of Me treacle. I could swear that she's lip-synching. I'm staring hard. She's cupping her hands around the mic so you can't see her mouth. Still, something seems off. But I had always heard that SNL had a no lip-synching rule with musical performers, so I just assumed that I was being obsessive.

Then she comes out for her second song. Just as the band is about to start, a vocal track starts floating out from somewhere. It's the vocals for Pieces of Me. The band, unsure of what to do, starts playing the music for Pieces of Me. Ashlee starts skipping around the stage nervously. It then seems as though she's going to start "singing" that song again. Then, another different vocal track starts pumping out. Ashlee walks off the stage, leaving the band to continue to play the music for Pieces of Me. The show quickly cuts to commercial. When the show ccomes back, no Ashlee, no band.

At the end of the show, at the goodbye part, she BLAMED THE PROBLEM ON THE BAND PLAYING THE WRONG SONG!!!!

I'm not necessarily against lip-synching (or enhancing) as a part of big stage shows with lots of dancing (see Madonna and Britney) but this is SNL and it's a show that positions itself as a home for good LIVE music. And she wasn't dancing. Really.

But I guess it was exciting to see a major fuck up on live tv. Her Daddy couldn't control this script.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked the page I saw with tiled jig.gif as a background and a Quicktime file of that "zany" music with the bouncy saxophone riff playing. I'm sure everyone would recognize it if they heard it but I can't describe it better. It often gets played in cheezy comedy shows with the film sped up. Does anyone know what I'm talking about and what the song is called?

'60 MINUTES' CAMERAS CAPTURED ASHLEE SIMPSON INCIDENT FROM BACKSTAGE AT 'SNL'
Thu Oct 28 2004 15:43:44 ET

When Ashlee Simpson ran off the "Saturday Night Live" stage last week after her lip-sinc flap, 60 MINUTES cameras were there to record her embarrassing exit and the reaction from show creator Lorne Michaels and other shocked staff members of the show. The exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of the incident will be part of a Lesley Stahl report about the making of the venerable comedy program to be broadcast on 60 MINUTES Sunday, Oct. 31 (7:00-8:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Stahl and her cameras were also present for the dress rehearsal of Simpson's performance when she also ran off stage because her voice failed her, necessitating the now notorious live lip-sinc performance that backfired.

60 MINUTES was at the show last Saturday night because Stahl had been shooting footage and interviews all week for a report on how the show is put together. Viewers this Sunday will learn and see how the show is conceived, written and produced each week.

Lavigne blasts lip-syncers

30/10/2004 - 09:02:18 Avril Lavigne has become the latest pop star to blast her lipsyncing peers, calling them

Avril Lavigne has become the latest pop star to blast her lipsyncing peers, calling them "pathetic."

The Canadian singer was appalled by Ashlee Simpson's performance on last weekend's Saturday Night Live, when she was caught miming to a backing track when her drummer programmed in the wrong tune.

And, speaking to music website Billboard.com, Lavigne says: "There are a lot of people out there today, who have become stars or famous musicians.

"I wouldn't really define them as a star with a record only because they have connections and only because they have money and for the wrong reasons. And it sucks.

"Actually, I know for a fact there are some young female artists who don't even sing on their own records and who don't sing live. And that is pathetic."

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 30 October 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

It's really sad to see SNL making such a big deal of it on tonight's show when their current musical guest can't even be bothered to hold the mic up to his mouth while his backing track plays on for half a line.

They're likely paid well enough not to care.

There's a huge thread about the Simpson brouhaha on a pro audio message board that I frequent. A few people have blasted the band for not stopping the song after the obvious snafu, but I would have done exactly what they did and kept playing. I love how the bassist and second guitarist both crack smiles before the cut-to-commercial. It's as if they're saying "Hey, we know how not to make asses of ourselves on live TV.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 1 November 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

well, it wasn't a segment about ashlee. it was a segment about SNL that touched briefly on ashlee because they happened to be filming the segment last week.

a fine fluff-piece of a segment.

lorne michaels' claim that no one has ever lip-synched on SNL except "during dance breaks" (or something to that effect) in recent pop songs rang quite hollow coming a day after eminem lip-synched through a performance in which he was just standing there with a mic (singing live along with a taped lead vocal, as noted on the eminem SNL thread). and the last time i saw britney on SNL she wasn't lip-synching during a dance break. she was lip-synching start to finish. and it didn't sound like she was singing along with a taped vocal either. it sounded 100 percent taped.
