in praise of ... the buggles, adventures in modern recording

to the extent that the buggles get any praise at all, it is reserved for the age of plastic. the age of plastic is a fine recording, no question, but i think that adventures in modern recording is better. i don't think that any songs here became monstrous hits like -- or were as good as -- "video killed the radio star" (though "i am a camera" comes close quality-wise [though not hit parade-wise]), but there are just more good songs here than on their earlier record. it's also a must-listen to those who fetishize trevor horn the studio-boffin.

why has this gem of a recording fallen into the memory pit?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 25 October 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i have not heard yes's drama yet (it's somewhere on a monstrously-long "must-listen" list, though precisely where god only knows). i am aware that "i am a camera" = drama's into the lens, though.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 25 October 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm Buggles obsessed, it's nice to at least see someone else mention them!! I have both albums and if people could get past "Video Killed the Radio Star" they'd see the true goods!! Thank you, that's all for now.

Riah (ryebot), Monday, 25 October 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Drama's really, really great. If you're this big a Buggles fan you need to bump that up top of your to-listen list.

concerned buggles fan, Monday, 25 October 2004 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it's sad that once The Buggles & Yes joined forces... well, we all know that didn't end well, but I'll take your advice.

"owner of a lonely heart" is "not ending well"?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 25 October 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, but who (besides you fine people) really like/know any of their other work??

that's the sad part, ya know?

this record is wonderful. trevor horn is wonderful. the end.

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 25 October 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Sadly, a bunch of guys that I know very little about, other than their hit. I didn't realize they had merged with Yes, which is, sadly, another bunch of guys that I know very little about except for their hits.

Vincent Gallo to thread!

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 25 October 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

indeed. the buggles released some fine albums. adventures, more so.
however, avoid the bruce wooley and the camera club at all costs. their video killed the radio star only goes to show how much of a studio god trevor horn is.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Monday, 25 October 2004 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, as cool as Adventures... is, it has less of that lovely Pop sheen that's all over Age Of Plastic . Plus, its a darker, slower record than Plastic , and the songs are less interesting. I think Drama carries more of the Buggles spirit than Adventures does. Still, a fine record.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Petridish to thread haha (he might learn something)

i love the sleeve. sorta sums up what Horn might've been feeling at this point: yeggles over, partnership with G.Downes over, etc.

HOLY CRAP! PROPAGANDA!!

I mean, he only produced one single. But I don't care. Propaganda! Propaganda's back! I wonder if Susanne and Claudia will both be singing with them...?

propaganda propaganda propaganda!

I found this album on a half-unwound Memorex cassette in the gutter in Seacombe on the way back from church in about 1983. This is true. I remember it being the best-sounding thing I'd ever heard (on my brother's JVC proto-micro system). I wonder where it is now?

one year passes...
I got this recently and it's only gotten maybe three full listens yet (I've picked up WAY too many records lately) but I am LOVING it. Age of Plastic is pretty friggin' great but I always sort of tuned out for the spacier ballads (Astro Boy, Miss Robot, etc). Adventures never really loses the beat, and there are some truly mind-blowing momemnts - the HUGE Moogy assault in the middle of Vermillion Sands, the delightful goofiness of him chanting "I was a Beatnik, I was a Beatnik," etc etc. A truly joyful, exuberantly recorded record, the sort of thing I'd really like to make someday.

The reissue comes out tomorrow!

Adventures In Modern Recording, the deluxe reboot. The complete album remastered, plus all the B-sides and remixes of the era, and seven previously-unreleased demos. Hand-picked by Trevor Horn, the demos include Videotheque (which Trevor would later produce for Dollar) and We Can Fly From Here, parts 1 and 2 (which Buggles originally wrote for Yes, and was performed on their legendary Drama tour). Expanded artwork includes new liner notes and interviews, rare photos and single sleeves.

I still like "The Plastic Age" better but this is also an amazing record. They are largely just remembered for "Video Killed The Radio Star", which was surely a great pop song in its own right. But most people aren't aware that the guys behind "Video Killed The Radio Star" actually made two fantastic albums (three, if you count "Drama").

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Friday, 1 October 2010 09:44 (fifteen years ago)

Got a copy of Geoff Downes' '87 solo album The Light Program recently, which I am enjoying. Double album with five long instrumental synth pieces.

timellison, Saturday, 2 October 2010 00:33 (fifteen years ago)

Hmmm... OK. Sounds entirely different from Asia then, wasn't that keen on them.

Todd Rundgren did of course do magic for the likes of ABC and Dollar, and actually even for Seal years later.

I prefer "Into The Lens". That is my favourite track on "Drama", which makes it hard for me to quite accept a different version later on.

Just pulled this down (not the reissue, however). I can't quite determine A) what I think of this or B) what kind of music it is. It's progressive, I guess. But it's also kind of more melodic than most prog...but not exactly the Brill Building in terms of tunes. Odd record.

Naive Teen Idol, Sunday, 19 June 2011 05:12 (fourteen years ago)

Prog new wave, I like that description. I still love both albums no matter how of their time they sound. "Video Killed The Radio Star" will never be played out for me.

given this thread revival, this dropped in my inbox a couple of days ago :

Trevor's new project - Producers - have finally finished their début album, and it's set for release in March 2012. (They were The Producers, then US, now they're Producers. And this time the release date is final!)

At the same time, Trevor has reformed The Buggles who are playing a surprise gig this coming TUESDAY 25TH OCTOBER at the British Music Experience at The O2.

anyone go along ?

SQUIRREL MEAT!! (Capitaine Jay Vee), Saturday, 18 February 2023 10:06 (two years ago)

It's a cool record. Love the maximalist hugeness of the sound, applied to these kind of esoteric or dorky little song concepts. Didn't realize until looking it up today that it's very close to a Trevor Horn solo project, as Downes left to co-found Asia just as sessions began.

got it in the blood, the kid's a pelican (Doctor Casino), Monday, 20 February 2023 18:45 (two years ago)

Gave it a fresh listen and it sounded even better than I remembered! "Huge" is the word I keep coming back to. Maybe some of the songs aren't quite as pop-ready as on the debut, but it's still a good listen. "Lenny" remains the absolute standout for me.
