One song that will guarantee dance action.

I'm selecting music for a dance party on Frinight. Name me one song that'll surely guarantee at least 15 people dance intensely to it.

Here are the particulars:

There will be about 80 people in a room that fits 79.
Most of those will have varied musical tastes.
I will be all over the place, genre-tically.

Now, you go...

"Le Freak" by Chic

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

There might be previous threads on this (you can direct me to them if you've know them), but I'm interested in your answer as of RIGHTNOW!

"Kids In America"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Come On Eileen" seems to be pretty universal on this front.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"the hustle"

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"Keep It Comin' Love" - KC & the Sunshine Band

Actually, why don't you just play pure disco, all night, baby ....

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Express Yourself, followed by Dancing Queen never fails. If this is a party for people who don't dance to Abba, I suggest Pump Up the Volume.

boringbastard, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

kid creole & the coconuts - i'm a wonderful thing

or, if you're looking for something everyone will know, try 'ante up'

or 'feel like bustin loose'

jake b. (cerybut), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"Actually, why don't you just play pure disco, all night, baby..."

Cuz I can't stay there. Plus, I find that small sets of disco's greatest dancefloor smashes are even more dynamic right after other different danceable stuff.

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I nominate Inner City's "Good Life" or "Big Fun." If you don't mind being completely obvious, almost everything from Thriller will make people move.

Rich (Rich), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

ha, I thought this might be a Matt DC thread, as he and I are both DJing at Club Freaky Trigger tomorrow (and I knew I hadn't started it, obviously). I'll let you know if anything I play gets people dancing. Probably not.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"heart of glass"

zappi (joni), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

How old are the people at this party?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Assuming they're the age of the avg ILM'er (let's say 20-40), then I'll add
AC/DC -- You Shook Me All Night Long
Outkast -- Hey Ya

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Mirror in the bathroom - The beat
running away - Roy Ayers

tipustiger, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Beat It - Michael Jackson
Too Much Too Young - The Specials

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

this sounds horrendous. they will all need to be very drunk.

bulbs (bulbs), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

no, Billie Jean. everyone loves Billie Jean.

Perhaps also Rapture by Blondie.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Playing "Billie Jean" would make me pour beer in the tape deck.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

peepee how OLD are these people??

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

(Sorry, I was out for a bit...)

OK.
I'm not necessarily looking for things that everyone would dance to, but surefire songs for smaller groups to go apeshit over. Indie Hipsters. Roots Rock and Rollers. Dub Freaks. Funksters.

The crowd will be mostly 17 - 50. Artsy types, mostly (its a party after a spoken work and performance art exhibition). I'm interested in smaller, more intense groups dancing, maybe encouraging others to dance to something they might usually consider. (I know this will be easier to do later in the evening/morning)

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough"
The 'Sex Machine'/'In the Jungle Groove'/'Funk Power' version of "Give It Up or Turnit a Loose"
"Blitzkrieg Bop"

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

To be honest, I think MindInRewind nailed it with 'Hey Ya!'.

Everyone went bananas when I played 'Annie I'm Not Your Daddy' at a party recently, but I get the feeling there's more 'fuck - it's Kid Creole & The Coconuts! I'd forgotten how great this sounds' recognition in the UK than the US. You are in the US, right?

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Canada, thus, yes, US.

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I played Jump Around by House of Pain in what was meant to be a semi-ironic kind of way a few years back at a party and was taken aback at how many people went silly with the dancing when it came on.

papa november (papa november), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh ooh oohh ohh ohh you MUST put on "teddy's jam" by guy

jake b. (cerybut), Thursday, 28 October 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The above should read "maybe encouraging others to dance to something they might NOT usually consider"

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 28 October 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Both sides of Jimmy Shand's Party 10". You won't even need an MC!

Prince, "Kiss"

or

New Order, "Bizarre Love Triangle"

Star Hustler, Thursday, 28 October 2004 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm genuinely a little surprised that nobody's mentioned "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'." It's not necessarily my favorite Michael Jackson song, but my gosh, if I had a nickel for every time it filled a dancefloor.

The Rapture - "House of Jealous Lovers"... DUH!

Nancy Boy (scottkundla), Thursday, 28 October 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Radio 4 - "Dance To The Underground (The Good Finger Remix)"

Nancy Boy (scottkundla), Thursday, 28 October 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry for thinking you were American.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 28 October 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

These are all no brainers, anything disco-punk will do the trick.

Nancy Boy (scottkundla), Thursday, 28 October 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The audience is aged up to 50, Nancy Boy.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 28 October 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

But they're so hip then GIVE 'EM VITALIC'S 'FANFARES'.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 28 October 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

SHAKE! YOUR! RUMP-AH!

('Intergalactic', 'Fight For Your Right', 'No Sleep Til Brooklyn' and 'Sure Shot' are also safe bets)

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 28 October 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

There are also these two songs named 'Like I Love You' and 'Rock Your Body'.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 28 October 2004 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Be careful with "House Of Jealous Lovers"... last time I went dancing, it got the weakest reaction of the night.

The Kinks "You Really Got Me" will unite the generations, albeit in the requisite small but enthusiastic "pockets".

You could also try "Smells Like Teen Spirit" into The Archies "Sugar Sugar". Works much better than you might imagine.

Also, the people who will react to Pulp's "Babies" will REALLY react to it.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 28 October 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

HEY! DIRTAY! BABY, I GOT YOUR MONEY, DON'T YOU WORRY! I SAID "HEY"! BABY, I GOT YOUR MONEY!

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 28 October 2004 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"Got Your Money" is all set to go, as are many others that have been mentioned. Sure, some of the folk will be up near 50, but many of those will be fairly knowledgeable and adventuresome, as will the young'uns.

More lesser known gems!

Good karma. Fuckin' truckloads of it. Or possibly mafia connections. Or hypnosis.

Telephonething, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 05:04 (twenty years ago)

nine years pass...

I can't think of anything by the Fall that would bring the peoples out on the dancefloor, but the right Fall song after the right "dancefloor filler" in the right vibe could be grand. "Telephone Thing" on that night met those requirements.
