Desmond Carrington played a powerful version of this yesterday. What do you think?

It's an Xmas song of sorts, made famous by Aled Jones and now dully sneered at in Starbucks posters.

DC's version was by an Irish lad. I was struck by the song's musical and melodic qualities.

Strange, I heard this at work tonight on some awful generic Christmas tape, and stopped to think awhile. I'd never really thought about the melodic charms of it before, but was struck by them suddenly.

I also have a vague memory of being small and being told that Aled Jones didn't sing it anymore because his voice had broken, and thinking that this was some dreadful thing which had stopped him singing altogether. The sense of wasted talent was felt even as a youngster.

I love this pinefox "song series" (TM). Keep 'em coming.
You're not going to get me to deconstruct 'Walking in the Air', though.

From 'The Snowman'? The melody neatly encapsulates the feeling I always get when being hauled about the sky by a flying snowman who keeps looking at me in a funny way. Top song.

I also heard this - Declan someone or other. Extraordinary version.

Raymond Briggs in general - top man. On the money re. Jimmy Corrigan too.

Will have to try to avoid showings of The Snowman and The Bear over the hols - it'll upset me too much.

Ethel and Ernest also an excellent book - but given the ending, I don't think I'll ever have the strength to read it again.
