Almost a Hüsker Dü reunion

Grant Hart and Bob Mould played together for the first time in 16 years at last Thursday's sold-out benefit for Soul Asylum's Karl Mueller in Minneapolis. SA played (with Karl), as did Paul Westerberg (solo), Mould solo, the Gear Daddies, and members of Golden Smog, who were joined by Steve Wynn and Westerberg.

It was definitely the first time all those bands were onstage together. Peter Jesperson called it a Rock N Roll Class of '83 reunion. For me, it was weird to see 1984 being turned into classic rock before my eyes.

Check out my review and Tony Nelson's photos if you like:

I don't have a question, sorry...

totally most overrated band this side of Kiss

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

According to Rollins on his radio show, Mould has been playing around DC with Brendan Canty from Fugazi on drums and they sound amazing.

Between this comment (taking swipes at both my beloved Kiss and Husker Du) and his pro-Ann Coulter messages on ILE, I think it's quite fair to say that I HATE ROGER FIDELITY!

Nothing personal, Roger, it's just that you seem to embody everything that is wrong with the world. Prove me wrong.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

personal attacks are funny, alex.

pro-Ann Coulter messages on ILE

What??? Even conservatives know that Ann Coulter is a moron.

King Korn Carn, Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

she's a guilty pleasure, admittedly

that's ok alex. i don't really like Killing Joke too much, except for that first album.

But you're wrong about one thing - I'm everything that's RIGHT with the world!! and a dying breed, at that.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Fair enough, Roger. Keep on truckin'.

Lighten up, Ian. It's not like I posted using Roger's name and login or anything (that's the shit that's not funny).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

You're so old, Alex.

THAT Adam Levine (deangulberry), Thursday, 28 October 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Age and wisdom have nothing to do with this......or any thread on ILM, actually.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 October 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

there's some pictures of this floating around the interweb....Mould looks healthy. Hart looks....less so. Which should come as no surprise to anyone that has seen one of his very uncomfortable solo shows in the last couple years....jeez louise is that guy getting bitter and angry! I saw him at the big City Pages 25th Anniversary shindig at First Ave and it was UNMUTHAFUCKINCOMFORTABLE!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 28 October 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

uncomortable in a bad way? "angry, bitter performer plays uncomfortable show" sounds kinda like an interesting evening to me... (altho Mould was always the better songwriter, the last 10+ years not withstanding. oof those solo records are clunkers)

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 28 October 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

meanwhile, my prized copy of the out of print live disc, The Living End that I paid too much for on eBay has still not shown up. Karma, I'm sure.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 October 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

plus Grant has an awful lot to be bitter about, that HIV whole mis-diagnosis, Mould getting all the acclaim, etc.

x-post

Boy, Bob sure looks fit these days.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 28 October 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Um...a little good and bad....He can still sing well...but he has this new kinda "woman hating schtick", which is sometimes funny but mostly not....he gets mad at people in the crowd, says really petty things about audience members.....he kept asking where all the black people were and then kept saying to the one african american dude in attendence (kinda sarcastically) "hey man, it's cool, right? it's all pink on the inside, right?"....

then he said he wouldn't play "Diane" cuz that'sa anti-woman song then he played it like to songs later....i dunno it was a sort of thrilling in a way, but mostly just uncomfortable and a 'lil sad.

for the record, his last way overlooked CD, Good New for Modern Man, was a great little 60s ornate psych pop record....no one bought it though.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 28 October 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I should also add that once my old band was playing a "divorce show" where all the proceeds went to a local musician's alimony settlement....anyway, we all were supposed to play bitter, anti-love song covers.....we had planned on doing Never Talking to You Again, and Grant happened to be playing as well.

We asked him to do it with us and he very graciously agreed. It was definitely one of the highlights of my lil' hobby career in rock. Quite a thrill, and it was nice of him to do.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 28 October 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

that reunion sounds amazing - where was Greg Norton?

I heard he owns a smancy restaurant in Wisconsin now. Interested to hear the bob mould / ian maccaye collab spoken of above. Though - BM's attempt at techno awhile back was painful just to hear about (I never listenned to the thing.)

I sold Greg Norton a six-pack of Summit once. Still had the moustache.

Bob Mould needs to go back to WCW.

an article from this summer on Greg Norton's new restaurant:

http://www.startribune.com/stories/456/4820409.html

i saw it in print, and in the picture he still had the mustache, had barely aged a day since the huskers, it appeared.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 28 October 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

he kept asking where all the black people were and then kept saying to the one african american dude in attendence (kinda sarcastically) "hey man, it's cool, right? it's all pink on the inside, right?"

for reals? that's ... unsettling.

frankE (frankE), Thursday, 28 October 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

(i should have added that the dude in question plays in a band that's fairly well known locally and i'm fairly sure that him and grant might know each other a little bit, but still i thought it was weird)....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 28 October 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I got to interview Grant last year(you can find a thread about it on here somewhere) and brought him to play at the bar where I did sound. He effectively advocated violent regime change at home, shall we say.

yeah, he's REALLY fucking bitter, and still has a gut.

Still, while the first Sugar disc narrowly edges out the first Nova Mob disc, i like Grant's _Intolerance_ far more than _Workbook_ and _Black Sheets of Rain_ put together.

also, part of the reason why Grant's last disc didn't sell much was 'cuz the label owner's wife ran off with the investor. That put a bit of a crimp on things.

If you do a search on Slsk for "grant hart interview", you might be able to find the raw recording i made of it.

Sir Kingfish Beavis D'Azzmonch (Kingfish), Thursday, 28 October 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually thought Grant looked good, too (see the photos in the review I linked to at top of thead, which also links Greg Norton's restaurant, by the way). As for Grant being bitter, here's him in tomorrow's Star Tribune:

http://www.startribune.com/stories/1371/5055284.html

Things were reportedly rosy as can be between Hart and Mould, who only agreed to their reunion that afternoon and rehearsed nil. Interestingly, they each picked a song by the other guy. Hart laughed at the coincidence that they chose such toxic tunes ("Never Talking to You Again" and "Hardly Getting Over It").

"People forget that Bob and I always had mutual admiration for each other's music," Hart said. "It's why we were in a band together for nine years."

Mould called Hart the next day before flying back to Washington, D.C., to "put the bow on the package," Hart said. But don't go thinking what you're probably thinking.

Asked about the likelihood of any future pairings, Hart said, "Anybody who didn't ever see Bob and I play together before, they missed their chance if they weren't there last Thursday."

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 28 October 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Boy, Bob sure looks fit these days.

Check out Bob's 'modulate' blog. Virtually every day he writes about how many times he's gone to the gym.

steve-k, Friday, 29 October 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Grant Hart's last album, Good News for Modern Man, is every bit as good as Intolerance, which is say, really freakin' great (and hardly the "one man electronic band" that the City Pages review implies). I listen to his solo albums as much as I listen to Husker Du (all the time) and a lot more than I listen to Mould's post-Du work (never, with the exception of the first Sugar album and EP every few years). I really don't get the big deal about Mould. I mean, I absolutely love everything Husker Du ever did, pretty much, but I always thought it was Hart's songs that made the albums special.

I remember reading an interview with Black Francis way back when where he said he only owned about five records when he formed the Pixies, and three of them were Husker Du albums. He would listed to Hart's "Green Eyes" every day. And, incidentally, it's Hart's "Turn on the News" that's on the official Rock and Roll Hall of Fame jukebox (for whatever that's worth).

Funny Bob Mould story: the last time I saw him live, truly doing the one man electronic band thing, I saw a guy go up to the merch man at the end, and very politely tell him about all the times he's seen Mould, and all the great shows, and how this night was so terrible he'll never pay to see Mould again. He was really sad, serious, and apologetic about it.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 29 October 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

That story on Norton's new restaurant is great! I have noticed how over the years his cooking position always seemed to be getting more prominent. That's really something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 October 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I WAS SO FUCKING PISSED when i realized we'd driven right around that area while moving out to portland and COMPLETELY forgot about stopping at Greg's restaurant. i even had all my vinyl & bass guitar in my car that he could have signed.

oh well.

and here we see a record dork meeting Grant again

Sir Kingfish Beavis D'Azzmonch (Kingfish), Friday, 29 October 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, my description of 'Good News' was a simplification, but it is one-man: The only other musician on it is the guitarist from Indigenous.

For what it's worth, I think Mould's last album Modulate, was really, really good, and better than any of his other solo records.

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 29 October 2004 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Criminey, Grant looks horrible!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 October 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post There are tons of great one man band projects; it's the "electronic" part of the description I primarily took issue with. Unlike "Modulate" (which was Ok but ultimately forgettable), "Good News for Modern Man" is a drum-machine free rock album. With great songs.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 29 October 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm glad to see Greg Norton doing so well, and that he is happy with his life. Norton never got (and still doesn't get) the credit he deserved. Yes, he wasn't a songwriter, was "only" the bassist. But I remember seeing Hüsker Dü so many times back in the day, and, damn, Norton held that group together on stage. I still cringe whenever I read "Norton doesn't count". If you ever saw Hüsker Dü play, you'd know damn well how integral he was.

Just ONCE I'd like to see the guy get his due. OK, mini-rant over.

Plus, Norton was also a very nice guy.

Majooba, Friday, 29 October 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

And, incidentally, it's Hart's "Turn on the News" that's on the official Rock and Roll Hall of Fame jukebox (for whatever that's worth).

to add to the FWIW: "turn on the news" was the first song i played on college radio.

Yeah, I think it's hard to love Zen Arcade and not appreciate Norton's bass playing there especially. I love the bass on "You Can Live at Home Again," too.

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 29 October 2004 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"You Can Live at Home Again," another Hart song ...

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 29 October 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Grant do one of his solo things a few years ago. He just drove up to the club in a station wagon, parked in front, hauled his guitar and amp in, and then hung out at the bar talking to people until he played. There was definitely some bitterness in his vibe, but he did lots of great songs, and at one point opened up the floor to requests and did about 5 or 6 of them, including "Diane." I've always loved Intolerance, been less impressed with his subsequent stuff, but based on the above recommendations I guess I should check out the last one.

FWIW, Intolerance is perhaps the one CD I've sold that I miss.

HUSKER DU

sorry for shouting, but, fuck, Husker fucking Du...

No longer a soundtrack to my life, which is probably a good thing.
However, there were times in my early twenties when they were all I had. Pathetic but true. Husker Du,swimming in their misery making things worse...

hull hole (hull hole), Friday, 29 October 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

husker du . . . ah, they don't make 'em like they used to. i heard bob posted about the show on his blog but didn't mention hart, though he linked to a review. i love mould, but he is still clearly messed up about the husker stuff. hard to live down your past, i guess, even if it makes you a legend.

who are the reigning champs of sst rockers post-dramatic bullshit melodrama, husker du, black flag or negativland?
