in particular, songs that mention kentucky in the lyrics, but not in the title, although it's OK if they do.

already got "blue moon of kentucky," randy newman's "my old kentucky home," pavement's "kentucky cocktail" and "man of constant sorrow" (although if you can recommend a version more definitive than the soggy bottom boys'-- and i'm sure there is one-- bring it.)

Kentucky Waltz. The version I know is off of "16 Gems", by Bill Monroe & His Bluegrass Boys, a collection of very early (and very good) recordings.

We were waltzing that night in Kentucky
Beneath the beautiful harvest moon
And I was the boy who was lucky
'Though it all ended too soon...

re: man of constant sorrow: theres a very nice version of it on Dylan's "The Bootleg Series vol. 1". (although I don't remember any mention of Kentucky in it)

There's a song called "Nelly Gray", the first two lines of which are "There's a low green valley/On the old Kentucky shore". Can't remember who recorded it, sorry.

Gorky's did a song called 'Heart of Kentucky' on their Amber Gambler EP

Jeff W, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Kentucky Propeller Factory" by Tranquil. It's an instrumental though. "Ohio River Boat Song" by Will Oldham under the Palace Music guise is all about living on the Ohio here in Louisville.

To answer Damian's question about 14 months later, yes Elvis did do a song called 'Kentucky Rain'. And it's a mighty fine song, too.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

'send in the clouds' by the silver jews.

"I knew a puppy...who walked from kentucky...he made it to east virginia by dawn...he had seventeen ideas in his head."

"You Be Illin'," Run-DMC:

"One day when I was chillin' in Kentucky Fried Chicken..."

"Night of the Living Rednecks," Dead Kennedys also has a KFC reference, right before dude gets doused by Portland kids.

Sadly, as a born-and-raised Kentuckian, the only one I can come up with right now (that hasn't already been mentioned) is...

"push me up against the wall/young Kentucky girl in a pushup bra" from the Chili Peppers song, uh, whatever it was called.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh, in this one Tribe Called Quest song, Phife goes...

"Arizona, Villanova, aw, aw, KENTUCKY/
who's the next MC steppin' up to try and bust me"

...on Beats, Rhymes, and Life.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

"Me & Bobby McGee" by Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, Johnny Cash, others:

From the coal mines of Kentucky to the California sun
Bobby shared the secrets of my soul
Standing right beside me Lord in everything I done
Bobby's body kept me from the cold
Then somewhere near Saulito, Lord I let her slip her away
Looking for that home I hope she'll find
And I'll trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday
To be holding Bobby's body close to mine

Any tape is better with Gorky's Heart of "Kan"-tucky.

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

So, is Kentucky, like, worthy?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Kentucky is worthy if only for the bourbon.

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Kentucky is worthy for bourbon, AND SO MUCH MORE!

For starters, Ale-8-one.

hstencil, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

gordon lightfoot did 'me and bobby mcgee' too and I think kris kristofferson wrote it.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Kentucky is worthy for bourbon, AND SO MUCH MORE!

he he he...whenever I'm outside of Kentucky, and I tell someone that's where I'm from, 99.9% of the time, this is how it goes:

"Yeah, I'm from Kentucky..."
"Dude, DANK BUDS grow in Kentucky!"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

christoff (christoff), Thursday, 6 March 2003 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
The word "Kentucky" > 10% of the lyrics of "Kentucky Fried Flow" by Armand Van Helden.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 30 March 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
I know this thread is probably pretty much dead, but I had to get this one in:
Nightmare Before Christmas - Jack's Lament
"To a guy in Kentucky, I'm Mister Unlucky"
Dolly Parton - Kentucky Gambler (also good for the songs about gambling thread)
Loretta Lynn - Blue Kentucky Girl
Tons of songs by The Nappy Roots
hmm...running low...
Uncle Tupelo - Coalminers

I'll leave it at that.

AlienBoy (AlienBoy), Monday, 7 July 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"Man Of Constant Sorrow"

there must be some Mountain Goats lyric with kentucky in somewhere as well..

Wyndham Earl, Tuesday, 8 July 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"My Old Kentucky Home" - written by Stephen Foster. No doubt numerous versions available, but one readily available one might be 3 Dog Night's on the '7 Seperate Fools' platter.
