Alfie?

A friend of mine just emailed me to ask what I knew abt Alfie. At first I thought he was talking abt the GRATE Sonny Rollins/Oliver Nelson alb, but no, he was in fact asking me about the new popular beat combo of the same name. I cannot help him at all, so thought some of the big branes here might know more...

He also asked about Jimi Tenor, btw.

Aren't they some geezers who played on the Badly Drawn Boy album? I heard a couple of Alfie tracks - brass and cellos and stuff alongside BDB-esque acoustica. Not great.

the Alfie i heard was pretty noisy guitar rubbish (but i do have a low guitar-noise threshold). they do a pointless cover version on the Kings of Convenience remix album.

Jimi Tenor is pretty good, imagine ppl on IL* will like him cos he sometimes goes into that sort of funky pop territory (like Prince etc). i really want a copy of his version of Caravan

Someone did "Alfie" in the King of Corsica last Friday and reminded me what a cracker of a song it is!

Tom, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

cracker of a film, too

I had to have the lead singer of Alfie forcibly restrained from smacking me one after I accidentally told him in great detail why I thought his band were rubbish.

jimi tenor: see here

i've always wanted to do that.....

ambrose, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They sound like the bluetones would sound if their singer sat down to sing.

Steve.n., Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What's this thread about? Alfie?

Mark, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alfie are dull, their singer is crap, and they haven't got two tunes to rub together. Probably the worst band on Twisted Nerve.

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the worst band on Twisted Nerve.,br>
hee hee! that is perhaps the worst insult you could throw at a band! no, hang on, 'worse than stuff on Twisted Nerve' would be even harsher, but would only work for non-Twisted Nerve artists

gareth, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So what you're all saying is they're crap, yes?

Andrew L, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually there are a couple of TN bands I quite like, most of David Tyack's stuff is lovely, even Mum & Dad are good for a laugh, but Alfie? shudder

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was hoping this was going to be a thread about Alfie Zappacosta, but my hopes were dashed! Alas!

three years pass...
Don't heard much from them before, but Alfie's new album, 'Crying At Teatime" is quite good. Anyone else?

yeah they were far and away the best thing about DPERCUSSION festival two weks ago, and i thought i would hate them. they are so far away from what i'd usually like that they come back round the other way into being loveable. if u get me.

the frontman had a real twinkly rapport with the front few fan-based rows of the crowd and was funy and pisstaking in that usual manc way, as some of the girls made all manner of rum suggestions.

this is, no joke what the said singer said from the stage about them : "This next song is where i think ALFIE should be at the moment. A Pentangle type tune vibe with a bit of Donovan vibe and some War of the Worlds type sound effects thrown in. This is the new single..." i honestly laughed out loud, and thought about starting a thread with that quote to say 'which band are being desrcibed here?'
i'd never have guessed it myself.

as i say, so far away from what i usually like...

"You Make No Bones" was a lovely little tune but I can't remember a fucking thing about the other than that and the one time I saw them live I left early.

The sign-off statement is incredibly bitter for a little indie band, dontcha think?

"We wanted it to work, you wanted it to work, the record company wanted it to work. So the question remains: where did everyone else's loving go, for frig's sake? Well I don't know where their loving went, but I know their cash went straight into the crazy frog's wackily amphibious bank account." Converting from Alfie to Crazy Frog is a touch Damascene, is it not?

Lee Gorton gave further depth to the split, adding that "Some of the band felt we weren't getting the breaks anymore. Not that you're owed 'em mind, but it's easy to lose heart when you've been trying to do things your own way for so long yet still not getting the response you're after. Everyone's human and people have a right to worry about what's happening with their lives... it's hard to keep faith that 'everything'll be alright', (which has been my mantra from day one), when it feels, ultimately, like no-one's listening." The poor dear!

Gorton went on to thank the bands loyal fans, mind, saying that "You lot, our faithful fans, being the exception of course. Ever loyal throughout, always providing that glimmer of hope and humanity when things have felt tough. I've been equally touched, entertained and encouraged whilst silently monitoring countless, seemingly trivial rows on the message board over the years. We've clearly meant quite a lot to some of you and knowing that and believing someone cares has provided priceless motivation!"

actually i red their forum this morning.
they are bitter.

i don't understand- they said they outstaged COLDPLAy at Galto 2001 (?)...but I got thei first album and it's not that good.
if they are that bitter, what should have beta band done?

castro, Thursday, 27 October 2005 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, from 2001 to 2005 - is that the longest a board has taken to be reactivated? Too bad, if the break-up is real, new album is decent, but I like the previous (3rd) album a but better (and the "Stuntman" single). Shame, they never played L.A. - and I haven't been anywhere they were playing, never got to see 'em. Oh, well. Ripe for re-discovery in 2015.

SoHoLa (SoHoLa), Thursday, 27 October 2005 23:45 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I agree, 'Do You Imagine Things' is really good although I don't think anything else they did is nearly as good. Seemed like the latest album was their last chance and the reviews said as much so a split is no surprise.
