Stewart Copeland -- Overdubs?

On Message in a Bottle I swear I hear him hitting the hi-hat, snare, and cymbal bell at the same time. Does anyone know if he used overdubs?

I wouldn't be surprised if he did. "Walking On The Moon" definitely has a few different hi-hats layered on top of each other.

what exactly is an overdub?

startrekman, Monday, 1 November 2004 05:42 (twenty years ago)

That's when you're playing dub and the echo of it gets so extreme that your speakers explode.

I believe it was 'only echo/reverb, no overdubs', from some documentary a long time ago.

I seem to remember him saying that on certain tracks ("No Time This Time", for example) there were overdubs involved, and he used to piss himself laughing when hearing other drummers give themselves a hernia attempting to replicate it.

Yeah, mainstream rock hits with overdubbed drums aren't unheard of. Bob Seger's "Hollywood Nights" has two separate drum tracks.

Somehow overdubbing drums seems a bigger crime against Rockism than overdubbing any other instrument

Butch Vig w/"Nevermind", man.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Message in a Bottle kind of bothers me because the overdubs (assuming they are) seem subtly blended in to make it sound like one drummer. I don't mind when there are two drum tracks on a song if it's really in your face awesome because there's twice as much drumming.

It creates the sonic impression that Stewart Copeland was, in fact, an octopus.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:23 (twenty years ago)

It is funny if other drummers have been sweating buckets and blistering fingers trying to emulate him!

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:25 (twenty years ago)

It didn't take me too long listening to figure "Hey, I don't have three hands"

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:34 (twenty years ago)

"It is funny if other drummers have been sweating buckets and blistering fingers trying to emulate him! "

You'll probably also find it funny, then, that when I was younger I spent a lot of time wondering over how to make my drums sound like John Bonham's on Kashmir (they were quite clearly processed).

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:43 (twenty years ago)

That's constructive though! The drums had to have a certain sound before all the recording and processing, so I would mess around with big bass drums with no holes, etc.

Unless you mean the flanging on the drums at the end, in which case that's pretty funny.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I'd like to hear how you did that

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't it recorded in the stair-well of the huge mansion they bought? Thus giving that rich reverberant quality.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 1 November 2004 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Or was that just When The Levy Breaks?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 1 November 2004 15:29 (twenty years ago)

I meant the flanging.

Of course, I also tried to get his kick drum sound on a 22" bass drum.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 1 November 2004 15:30 (twenty years ago)

A friend of mine told me that when he was young he thought that Peter Frampton was just really good at guitar and that was how he made it talk.

seven years pass...

So, Stewart apparently jams with various dudes at his home studio, overdubs and edits the improvisational performances and makes odd videos of the whole thing:

"Danny Carey, Les Claypool, Stewart Copeland and Neil Peart find a sick groove at the Sacred Grove."

It's mesmerizing.

Seriously mesmerizing:

"This was a particularly riotous party, and if the movie is a bit choppy it's because there were many sections that were too insane for family entertainment."
