An easy place to start:

Court Gamelan volumes 1,2, and 3 on Nonesuch

There's a European percussionist who recorded Gamelan musicians, improvised with them and cut it up in the computer for an album, but I'm blanking on his name. I'll post when I figure it out.

I was listening to Court Gamelan I last night. There's a really great dynamic part towards the end....

I love traditional gamelan, but this is the Nonesuch that had me picking my jaw up off the ground:

I like this one. Is Nonesuch releasing any new Gamelan comps?

LE CHUCK!™ (ex machina), Monday, 1 November 2004 20:31 (twenty years ago)

have you heard 'radio java' on sublime frequencies?

zappi (joni), Monday, 1 November 2004 20:44 (twenty years ago)

That Idjah Hadidjah is great, isn't it? Golden Rain, too.

In addition to the above, the Japanese label King put out some really well-recorded gamelan discs in the '90s, and you useta could find them in just about any fairly comprehensive record store. I can definitely recommend the one King did of Balinese gamelan featuring compositions by I Wayang Lotring--I think it's gamelan semar peguligan (sp?). Also, that three disc set Mickey Hart did's not a bad intro/sampler.

Seems like there have been a couple of threads in re this topic.

Radio Java seconded. Avoid, though, Gamelan Son of Lion.

What kind of stuff is on that Sumatran nonesuch comp? Is it at all similar to the things Folk & Pop Sounds of Sumatra (Sublime Frequencies)? The two tracks on that by Samsimar are among the most beautiful pop I've EVER heard.

The compilation of Balinese gamelan on Sublime Frequencies is nice evening mellow-out type stuff. I think its called Night Sounds of Bali or something. Field recordings, people sneaking through fields and opening doors into gamelan jams. Mostly slow and mysterious.

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Monday, 1 November 2004 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Ah, I forgot Sublime Frequencies! Great stuff.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 1 November 2004 21:44 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the Balinese comp is called Night Recordings From Bali and gets my recommendation as well. Anyone want to give me feedback on the Radio India and I Remember Syria volumes? They tempt me.

Barong Dance off of "Music from the Morning of the World" is quite good.

Revive in the face of tragedy.
I just picked this up at the Library:

I haven't gotten too far because it is making me very sad.
I haven't listened to the enclosed cd yet, either.

JW, you should hear "The Jasmine Isle" on Nonesuch; really slow, microtonally interesting Javanese gamelan.

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 20:53 (twenty years ago)

this should've been called "rolling gamelan thread 2004"

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 30 December 2004 17:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm gonna play a ton of this stuff on the radio today.

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Thursday, 30 December 2004 17:46 (twenty years ago)

DO IT.

p.s. sean, does your show stream?

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 30 December 2004 17:47 (twenty years ago)

It does not, sadly.

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Thursday, 30 December 2004 17:48 (twenty years ago)

oohh well! enjoy your GAMELAN.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 30 December 2004 17:56 (twenty years ago)

I've got Court Gamelan Vol. III on hold at the record store. Is it good? I've got a bunch of Balinese stuff but only one LP of Javanese stuff; it seems harder to come across.
