DJ software

There's a guy makes my sandwiches every working day, his mate wants to be a DJ, and wants to know if there is software he can get hold of to help. I think he's ideally after something he can download, preferably free, so if you have any other kinds of suggestion, some indication of price would be welcome. I haven't a clue what there is, or what any of it might do, so the more info the better, please. I'm sure there must be some people here who can help.

for windows?

LE CHUCK!™ (ex machina), Monday, 1 November 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

native instruments' traktor

not free... unless... you know...
but that is THE one to use.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 1 November 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I don't know if it's Windows, but I think it's highly likely.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 1 November 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

http://dj1800.com is good for mac

LE CHUCK!™ (ex machina), Monday, 1 November 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been wondering about this a bit -- by DJ software do you mean something that allows sampling and sequencing?

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

traktor is really good

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not absolutely sure what is meant, but I think the sampling/sequencing is the only likely explanation. I'm trying to organise getting the interested party to come here himself to ask the sensible questions.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

No - Traktor is like a pair of virtual decks that you play MP3's on.

Bernard the Butler (Lynskey), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Ableton live, if he's not after Traktoresque functions (MP3 Decks).

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

MIXMEISTER is great, and relatively cheap.
Not good for live mixing, but perfect for making mixtapes.
Easy to use, the beatmatching actually works, nice fades, lotsa fun.

In case anyone hasn't seen it, have a look at Infinite Wheel.

Apparently, it was created by one of Pigbag.

...so there.

Jez (Jez), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Traktor's great, though a friend of mine has one which you can add as many players as you like, I'd really like to try a 3 'deck' version of Traktor.

MattR (MattR), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Talk about Traktor.

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Like...how easy would it be for me to learn how to use it?

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

I still don't know which one to use!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

Can you get your head around 2 play buttons? If so it'll be a breeze

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

Is it timeline based at all? Or is it just two virtual decks?

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

So with Traktor I can just drop in .mp3 or .wav files and easily get it to beat match, while saving the resulting mix as a .wav or .mp3?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure about the beatmatching part...

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

I currently use Tactile, which is hilariously poor.

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

I did a "blend" of Shannon and Booka Shade last night. It sounded awful.

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

spencer: yes

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

i still need to get my very own copy of traktor, though i've really enjoyed goofing on my friend's version. it's great!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

tell us more!

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

it seems kinda intuitive. intuitivISH. you can use your ipod as a drive. you can easily search for songs (simple concept in theory but in execution it's pretty awesome)

you can do whatever you want!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

Tactile:

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

what is that little badly-lit thing?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

It's a teeny-tiny pair of mp3 decks!

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

awww!

are they usb controllers or something? how much did they cost?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

no no, they are virtual! That is a screenshot!

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

I am going to try this "Traktor!"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

oh really?

dude you gotta get traktor. it's DJ HELL APPROVED!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

Traktor etc. For 'free': www.audionews.ru/

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

Mixmeister? Ableton Live?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

it's not specifically designed for dj'ing but ableton live is by far the best option.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

Mixmeister I don't really know. Alherton's a bit more of a live-performance tool that is ok at doing the DJing job - I suppose like any music app stuff it comes down to whether or not you like the interface.

TRAKTOR
http://www.midimusic.it/PRODOTTI/NI/IMG/TRAKTOR2_SCREENSHOT.gif

Set up a bit like CD decks. Don't be intimidated by the great number of controls there - you probably won't use them and they're just there to justify the price of the thing in the main. You can also Hide any bits you don't use so the screen is less cluttered. In the browser window at the bottom you can create lists of what mp3's you want to use - so you don't have to move them all to one folder. You get a side-scrolling look at your soundfiles as they're wizzing past and time-remaining and other such useful bits - such as you can put markers on your files just like them little pink spots wot proper DJ's stick on them disco plates. There's also a really good hardware controller for Traktor too - its the right size and nicely made.

ABLETON
http://www.xelenio.com/recensioni/ableton_live/immagini/screenshot_ableton_2.gif

Looks a bit more like a standard music package dunnit? It'll take more time (ie. some) to get to grips with compared to Traktor but despite its rather simplistic appearance it's more versatile. If you're looking to apply FX and the like then its good, if you're just looking to mix mp3's together then Traktor is the bitches piss.

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

I am going get Traktor to make a mix that Avalanches fans will like and post it soon!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

"to get" of course

I really wanted to avoid asking this but I can't find any answers on the Mixmeister forums, in the help file or via Google. It's such a simple problem that I'll probably smack myself in the face when I find out.

I'm using Mixmeister 6 Pro on my laptop and when I load it up I get this annoying video preview panel at the bottom of the screen (just underneath the panel that shows the bpm of the track) - how do I get rid of this?!?

It's not the end of the world, it'd just be nicer to have more space for the wav forms on the screen. I'd be very grateful to anyone who can help.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 23 February 2006 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Hurrah sussed, and I'll leave the answer here for any sorry soul who finds themselves in my position:

Go to the VIDEO menu.
Go to the VIDEO MONTAGE BUILDER.
Bottom right, there's a SECONDS button, put zero in here. And ta da, gone!

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 23 February 2006 16:23 (twenty years ago)

good mac program for non-realtime mixing? (like laying tracks over each other visually, with beatmatching and such...) i think sonic foundry acid was good for this on pc back in the day, is there a mac equivalent?

Lukas (lukas), Thursday, 23 February 2006 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone know why my Traktor 3 is slowing my Powerbook all to hell? I can't do anything once I start that damn program !!! I tried max/min latency, no difference. What is wrong?

What is the deal w/ Traktor not supporting multiple soundcards? Numark makes a USB mixer (DM950USB) that seems like it would work great as a simple way around hooking up an external soundcard w/ multiple outs, and the company boasts that "Two USB ports are included so you can take advantage of the multiple sound card feature found in most DJ mixing software."

*most DJ mixing software*? Where are all these programs that support multiple soundcards? Traktor does not, as far as I can tell.

CDDB (Dan Deluca), Sunday, 30 July 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

I have a numark DXM01USB and I use ableton live with it. My drivers let me combine as many soundcards into my asio inputs and outputs. works like a charm.

Another setup I've tried that is awesome is mixing with the knobs on my midi keyboard (assigned to an eq per channel).. the only problem is my keyboard only has one fader and it's pretty stiff.
