mac dre was my favorite rapper.

Why? I'd never heard of the poor soul, previously.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was about to post that the story is real (The Bay Area section of today's Chronicle has a surprisingly long write-up). Despite faking his death a handful of times previously, this time it's the truth. Sad story.

three years pass...

oh my.

the black student union just wrapped up their daily 4th period black history month presentations w/ a presentation on mac dre.

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 29 February 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

did it include an insightful critique of dreagonomics?

sanskrit, Friday, 29 February 2008 19:18 (seventeen years ago)

My BSU meetings have an dishearteningly low amount of Mac Dre content.

The Reverend, Friday, 29 February 2008 19:19 (seventeen years ago)

basically it was just a long list of the people he'd worked with. i think all the teachers winced together when she said "kokane".

it's no ronald dregan

im a square wave and this is my hetero life partner jim jonsin (The Reverend), Saturday, 22 August 2009 08:19 (sixteen years ago)

absolutely not. Ronald dregan is actually a good album, while Pill Clinton is a shoddily assembled posthumous comp.

But still, PILL CLINTON!

D-40: whats the best Mac Dre lp, or 2?

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 25 March 2011 18:05 (fourteen years ago)

i fuxx w/ al boo boo & genie of the lamp, make sure you check 'off tha rictor' single tho

so fly zone (D-40), Friday, 25 March 2011 18:09 (fourteen years ago)

one of the best rap songs ever imo

so fly zone (D-40), Friday, 25 March 2011 18:09 (fourteen years ago)

I'll second genie of the lamp. only one I've heard in full but it is solid.

great production too. had this track on loop for like a whole afternoon a few months ago:

original bgm, Friday, 25 March 2011 18:13 (fourteen years ago)

love this:

Me and black jesus went to Rosaritas
Seen senoritas eating carnitas
I was rocking my adidas sneakers
Told the waitress give my fajitas

original bgm, Friday, 25 March 2011 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

Gonna get on that Genie lp, love that linked track, Alan. Been trying to round out my Yay tastes of recent. During the 90s I was big into e40, B-Legit, C-bo, RBL, Yukmouth, etc but hadnt got to Mac Dre/Mall yet. Just went on a big Mac Mall spree a few months back and feeling like its time to try Dre.

Thanks for the recs.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 25 March 2011 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

stupid doo doo dumb & young black brotha are my fav ones

sisilafami, Friday, 25 March 2011 19:07 (fourteen years ago)

if yr a rhythmalism fan u will probably like mac dre ... much more quik-ian party rapper (w/ a more sui generis style than quik, even) than a serious mob rapper like mac mall

so fly zone (D-40), Friday, 25 March 2011 19:08 (fourteen years ago)

young black brotha is dope too, his trademark rap style wasnt quite evident yet

so fly zone (D-40), Friday, 25 March 2011 19:08 (fourteen years ago)

Gonna go on a little Mac Dre spree here this weekend then. I will see what my local shops have in stock and maybe internet the rest.

I've heard good things about Thizzle Washington too, will put that on the short list as well.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 25 March 2011 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

def check 'heart of a gangsta mind ofa hustler' too, thats got 'off tha rictor' 'lets go riden' & afaik the first mention of 'hyphy'

so fly zone (D-40), Friday, 25 March 2011 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

should have mentioned, 'ronald dregan' is actually a much more consistent / arguably better album than 'genie of the lamp' but genie has a couple of my favorite mac dre songs on it so i give it the slight edge

so fly zone (D-40), Saturday, 26 March 2011 00:00 (fourteen years ago)

Dreganomics is where I chose to start, its stellar for real. I think Since '84 is the best song I've ever heard, love the guitar so much. The scattered guitar flourishes throughout the whole Lp is the kind of thing I fall hard for. The bass on Witme is crack too.

Haven't really delved into the lyrics yet, I usually just catch the whole vibe first then focus on lyrical details on later listens. I couldn't focus on anything but the lyrics when Jump It came on tho, undeniable.

Dre comes off kinda sloppy on the mic sometimes, probably by design but I love it either way.

Genie of the Lamp up next.

This track 'My Alphabets' w Suga Free & Rappin 4 Tay off Genie is pure. Makes me wish these cats woulda united for a full lp.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 6 May 2011 04:08 (fourteen years ago)

agreed! suga free is really underrated, and dre & 4-tay are legendary.

fav line: "i'm on parole, cuz!"

murdered 16 years ago today by someone in Kansas City, Missouri that the Kansas City, Missouri police department haven't been able to identify

here are some other homicides that the Kansas City, Missouri police department haven't been able to solve: https://www.kcpd.org/crime/unsolved-homicides/

anyway, that's sad. also sad is the fact that every time I ask a fellow Californian who their favorite California rapper of all-time is, most of the time they'll say Snoop or Tupac, which is so fucking lame. E-40 or Mac Dre are two very acceptable answers that no one should have to think about for too long.
