Sportspeople and music

Is anyone aware of any sports stars - past or present - whose musical tastes might be considered a bit outre (or at least a little interesting)? Back in 1987 or so, I remember British boxer Lloyd Honeyghan - he was then undisputed world welterweight champion - picking his favourite half-dozen records as a guest on a Saturday afternoon radio sports show (London's LBC). He chose six JA pre-release. Of course, given Honeyghan's self-styled "raggamuffin" persona, this was totally predictable (but cf. Frank "Springsteen" Bruno).

baseball star mike piazza's favorite cds (as reported by usa today):
Stronger Than Death, Black Label Society
No More Tears, Ozzy Osborne
Return of the Killer A's, Anthrax
Brave New World, Iron Maiden

not outre, but certainly a little bit interesting. and he's a regular guest on eddie trunk's metal show on q104 radio in new york.

Footballer Stuart "Psycho" Pearce (England and Forest) liked the Stranglers. Funny, that.

Not sports related, but I'm still trying to get my mind around the idea that Bill Clinton is a Peter Brotzmann fan. (Source: brief interview in one of the Oxford American's music issues.)

a sox pitcher enters to danzig's "mother"

Sympatico (shmuel), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago)

"a sox pitcher" -- that would be the god-like closer keith foulke.

(and the obvious lesson of this year's baseball playoffs was that he who comes out of the bullpen to danzig will destroy he who comes out of the bullpen to metallica.)

Honeyghan had his own reggae label for a while.

What about Scott Radinsky, who pitched for the White Sox (and a couple other teams, I think)? He was also the singer for the punk band 10 Foot Pole.

From what I can tell, hockey players tend to have the weirdest, coolest tastes in music. I remember someone from the NJ Devils saying he was a Black Flag and Minutemen fan.

Oh yeah, and Shaquille O'Neal has gone on the record as a pretty big Negativland fan.

bernie williams totes his classical guitar in a gigbag to the locker room most days. but in the words of sports guy, he's got a giant salad fork sticking out of his back.

Magdalena Maleeva, the world No 25 tennis player, likes Bjork, Pulp, Asian Dub Foundation and Talvin Singh. Tatiana Panova, the world No 74, was once sighted in a PJ Harvey t-shirt. That's outré for tennis players, most of whom are responsible for keeping the careers of Phil Collins and Céline Dion afloat.

Graeme Le Saux once got to pick his favourite videos for MTV and they included "Here's Where The Story Ends" by the Sundays and some other indie faves, which made a pleasant change from all the other players they let choose videos (Simply Red, Dire Straits, Sting all probably featuring in the other selections). I've got the whole programme on video somewhere.

I've seen Pat Nevin at gigs by Belle and Sebastian and the Delgados, and he has namechecked Vini Reilly and Morrissey in interviews.

Shaquille O'Neal has gone on the record as a pretty big Negativland fan.

Is this for real or a reference to them using his voice in one of their songs or something like that?
