The song that only you like.

You've always thought it was a fantastic song. You've never really heard it on the radio. You play it for your friends when they ask to hear something great they've never heard; you put it on mix tapes. Nobody gets it. Occasionally, somebody says "I really liked almost all of that tape you made--except for that one song. I sort of don't get that one." Or: "It's okay, I guess..."

What song is it?

For me, let's say Uncle Wiggly's "Eleanor's Pizza Party"--I got the sense that even they weren't too keen on that one. As far as I'm concerned, it out-Wedding Presents the Wedding Present and out-Unrests Unrest...

Douglas, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Deep Jimi and the Zep Creams' "Haia Gurusah," for its sheer dumbassness. Then again, nobody likes anything by them at all.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i love 'seymour stein'.

ethan, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't own it so I can't put it on a tape, but I love "Life In A Northern Town" by the Dream Academy. People have actually tried to beat the crap out of me for that.

Mark, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, but not on the radio...well, I've put P.E.'s "What What" on a few mixtapes b/c I totally love that song, & everyone is bored by it.

Mark, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

wu's 'cash still rules'.

ethan, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Raindance" by the Past Seven Days, "The Blank" by Position Normal, just about anything by the Auteurs, and just about anything by Wild Man Fischer.

WORLD IN MOTION by New Order

squealin brugmansiaq9999, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Squealin, you should meet my friends... As for music that ONLY I like among my friends, the one that comes to mind is Tom Lehrer. Oh yes... and I adore 'All That She Wants' by Ace of Base, for which I'm routinely vilified.

Daniel, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethan, Seymour Stein??? Dreeeeeeary

Daniel, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Run to the hills.

The Stranglers' cover of "Walk On By"

Jeff W, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Feargal Sharkey's You Little Thief. I liked it and A Good Heart (who doesn't?) and then bought the album (called Feargal Sharkey).

Never buy the album.

The Shaggs "Things I Wonder" Steely Dan "Bodhisattva"

Both of these songs have started physical altercations with others.

Gage-o, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Usually the most confrontation I have is when you're at a party and you sneak something on and suddenly someone's like 'What IS this, who put THIS on'. It's not that the songs are that obscure, its just that only Oldies radio stations tend to play them. Ok, I love 100 Pounds of Clay by Gene McDaniels.

Evangeline, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like 'Seymour Stein' too.

And 'Is It Wicked Not To Care'. And 'Family Tree'. And 'The Gate'.

I also like 'The Boys of Summer'.

DV, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i like is it wicked not to care and family tree too!

ethan, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When I Live My Dream by David Bowie, which is one of the wankiest early David Bowie songs ever. It's so over the top and preposterous that it becomes kind of poignant.

Nicole, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethan, are you on Sinister, or are you a poster to the Jeepster/Bowlie messageboards? If not, why not?

DV, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, another one because I remembered the Wonderwall thread a while ago. I love Cast No Shadow, but fear the beatings so I don't put it on mix tapes.

Evangeline, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no. oh and incidentally i love beyond the sunrise, it might be my favorite track on fold your hands child. i really didn't mean to talk entirely about b&s on this thread but it seems like whenever i decide i love a song i find out it's reviled by their 'fans'.

ethan, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Who doesn't like 'Is It Wicked Not To Care'?

Mark, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

don't a lot of people hate any song that murdoch didn't both write and sing on? oh and i just looked in the fold your hands liner notes to see what his name was and saw that 'alistair cooke' played percussion on this, that's not ally c is it?

ethan, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Who doesn't like 'Is It Wicked Not To Care'?

*cough*

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dream's "he loves you not." i was physically removed from a dj booth for playing this. and it doesn't totally count, but i'm amazed by how many people whose taste usually overlaps with mine can't stand the missy/mya/pink/xtina "lady marmalade," which i love.

dan_stuckey, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I once put Steely Dan's "Bodhisattva" on a party tape I and 2 other friends were making and they also tried to dissuade me.

I also confess a fondness for Henley's "Boys of Summer" and Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," to the dismay of my friends.

nickn, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Boys of Summer" is off limits now, because I like it too. Can't be "the song only you like" when we all like it!

Mark, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Limahl's "Never Ending Story". It's Moroder's prettiest song. And Uriah Heep's "Magician's Birthday", although I'm sure somebody on this list really likes it.

Arthur, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My weakness for pre-adolescent high-pitched wailing in rock like JJ72 and Muse nowadays always raises some eyebrows...I dont't get it neither, maybe it's just a phase I'm going through ;-)

Even JJ72's video's are pubescent, smashing guitars, black dress shirts, fire explosions...mmmmmmmmm

Erik, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eleven years pass...

This is an extraordinary piece of epic psych-punk with one of my favourite lyrics by anyone ever (for search purposes, The Astronauts/The Otters - Melissa's Party)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lK4SIufZELo

I entirely expect none of you to have heard it

which can be sold for meat if they are boys.. (sorry guys) (imago), Tuesday, 3 September 2013 20:07 (twelve years ago)

XTC's cover of "Watchtower" certainly fits this for me. Nearly every White Music review I've read singles that out as the album's most terrible moment. But the bark n' honk routine!
