Discuss. From Maine, supposedly the new Van Morrison...has some soul to his voice. I like him.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 4 November 2004 16:12 (twenty years ago)

I read a review of him in Les Inrockuptibles, but slsk has not bequeathed his album upon me as of yet. Just how similar is he to The Van?

Peanuts (Peanuts), Thursday, 4 November 2004 22:46 (twenty years ago)

I don't hear Van. "Trouble" sounds to me like the album that Gomez listened to way back in the day and said We can do better.

And there's the requisite waltzy track, the requisite more rockin', vaguely Rolling Stones-like track and the typical 4/4 guitar-driven acoustic-y stuff that doesn't seem new.

His voice is not distinctive like Van's. He sounds like the orig. Gomez singer and/or M Ward. Flutey huskiness. Nice, soothing stuff but ultimately leaves me unmoved.

Thea (Thea), Friday, 5 November 2004 01:02 (twenty years ago)

"hold you in my arms" sounds like Otis Redding in parts....not the voice but the tempo.

one year passes...
Anyone heard the new one?

Adam Harrison-Friday (AdamFriday), Saturday, 26 August 2006 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. Thea summed up my reaction.

I'm being dragged to see him against my will tonight - i think he sounds like he's in pain and not in a good way. I've a feeling tonight is going to be something of a trial.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

I like him. Or, more aptly, I really like his arrangements, especially on the second album.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

leigh, take some kind of killing device with you.

That Saved By A Woman thing might well be my least favourite single of last year. Horrible.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

Ditto, i'll be putting my ipod on if it gets too much, i'm glad i got the px 200 headphones, they might offer a bit of protection.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

All I know is the TV adverts, which sound like the worst music ever made. I BEEN SAVED BY WOMAN argh DIE DIE DIE.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

That Saved By A Woman thing - that's "Trouble", the title track off the first album. I'm not keen and thankfully there's nothing like that on the second album, which is very minimal, very slow, for the most part.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

from what i've heard he's not very good.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

He's total anti-ILM fodder though. Slow, rootsy, minimal, "authentic", bearded, retro. He's a fucksite better than Blunt et al though.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

I like to think i have very catholic tastes in music but if there's one thing i can't stick it's whiny singer songwriters. I got myself backed into a corner about the gig, my friend sent me a text on christmas day saying that her husband had arranged tickets but would be away so could i go. Rather than reply in the negative i just ignored it and hoped she'd forget about it. I did mention in passing that i hated that kind of music a few times but she's just had a baby and this is only her second night out after giving birth so i'd be the big bad bitch if i back out. As if that weren't bad enough i forgot to bring my bloody earplugs in with me.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

One of the songs on the new album--track 2 if memory serves--has a melody that sounds like a complete rip-off of "If I Needed Someone." FWIW.

Adam Harrison-Friday (AdamFriday), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

I heard Til the Sun Turns Black in a record store back when it came out. I asked the clerk if it was another new Ryan Adams album. In the end it turned out to be much better than that.

Decided to check out his myspace site after seeing his name around and reading some fave reviews that I did not necessarily trust. He's no Van Morrison. Thea's take way upthread says it all.

wow 2014's Supernova wasn't even commented upon in this thread. It was excellent, showed a lot of range that I never knew he had.

New one is decent but not as good as Supernova. Moody.

this record sounds like it could have been ilm-bait in some parallel universe but instead it has 20 million spotify listens. what's going on here? is it dads?

maybe everyone is following the "if you can't say something nice" rule? this guy is terrible.

alpine static, Wednesday, 17 February 2021 07:51 (four years ago)

it wouldn't be such a big deal if it was just his boring music, but he is also SO self-serious.

alpine static, Wednesday, 17 February 2021 07:52 (four years ago)

He is very popular with professional "mixologists" IME.
