Least good anthology boxset thingy

Not "Bad" ones, but ones where the potential was great and the result was oh.

The New Order one springs to mind. CD1 hits, CD2 obscures, CD3 dancey and CD4 live selections by bobby gillespie then revised by someone else to bobs chagrin. Oh and cd5 if you were lucky...

i honestly can't think of one suckier than the new order one.

a shame when the Joy Division one was so good.

but the bonus CD is good as its got the long version of

on it and they played that on a loop at the Saville exhibition and now it will always remind me of those sleeves.

I like the New Order One.

skynyrd one is rubbish

lukey (Lukey G), Friday, 5 November 2004 13:56 (twenty years ago)

The minute I saw the subject header it was a no-brainer: The New Order -- Retro Box is EASILY the worst compiled set ever. There was so little love and care put into it that it's painful.

The Velvets' one wasn't that good - 15 minutes of Lou, Sterl and Cale trying to play "Venus In Furs" and lots of unlistenably lo-fi live recordings

That Captain Beefheart Grow Fins thing on Revenant is remarkably stupid, inefficient and uneconomical - otherwise, I woulda bought it long ago.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 5 November 2004 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but the rest of the box was fine enough. (xpost the Velvets one)

The beefheart revenant one, I waited for a cheap one on e=bay for a long time, now I have it and it was fine for the price of it. It's a companion/fanfixated version of the "dust blows forward" one.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 November 2004 14:05 (twenty years ago)

On the Velvets' one, I'm sure my old bootleg copies of "Sheltered Life", "It's Alright, the Way that You Live" etc were MILES better than the ones on the boxset

The Buffalo Springfield box set is pretty ridiculous. There are a lot of tracks repeated over the four discs (as a result of the first two albums being on their twice, effectively) and a lot of stuff that gets left off. Like the long version of "Bluebird" that has only come out on the double lp Buffalo Springfield anthology, the one that is named with all the band member's last names. And there is no live stuff on it at all, and I understand that Neil Young is sitting on tons of material from that era. I can't complain too much, though, I got it for free.
I think that Grow Fins is pretty damn good, but I also got that on the cheap. I suppose I would feel different if I paid full price. I keep coming back to the first two discs on that one. "Triple Combination" is a great song.

I heard the Buffalo Springfield one was bad and I also that it ws Neil Young's fault it was too

"That Captain Beefheart Grow Fins thing on Revenant is remarkably stupid, inefficient and uneconomical"

It never made any claim to be in any way representative and was only ever intended for sad Beefheart obesssives; hence it was never going to sell in significant numbers and hence it was always going to have to be expensive by definition (especially since they also released it on vinyl).

Not producing the video footage in DVD format frankly was a bit of a dumb decision and it's a shame Gail Zappa didn't let them have any of the original Bat Chain Puller recordings or outtakes that they were after (especially Don and Denny Walley jamming "Hobosim" in the studio!).

Apart from that 'though, it doesn't duplicate anything that was - or was then expected to become - legitimately available (hence none of the Decals outtakes that Rhino were supposed to be including with the re-released 2CD version of the album which the cocksuckers STILL haven't done anything about completing) so I think your verdict's a bit harsh.

Personally I already had pretty much all of it's contents on tapes etc. but I thought it was worth the price just to have it on CD and for the bits I didn't already have (which was basically "Obeah Man", "Just Got Back From The City" and "Triple Combination"); but then, of course, I am one of those sad Beefheart obsessives at whom it was targeted!

My summary: I like it.

I seem to recall the Weird Al boxed set being four discs, when it could fit (run-time) on two. The Madness "Business" boxed set is great, except - and this is a big except - it tags interviews onto several tracks (as part of the actual tracks, too, which negates mix tape and MP3 usage) and it includes an alternate mix of "Our House," which is blasphemous. The Charlie Patton boxed set is beautiful, but it's annoying that all that stuff was released a month or so later for about $100 less.

Nod on 'Retro'. Wasn't it a no brainer to remaster all the 12"s and put them into the box? Apparently not...

Scott Warner (thream), Friday, 5 November 2004 15:03 (twenty years ago)

making it a "brainer" I guess.

I wish the Van Der Graaf Generator one had been better thought-out; I'm sure there are worse.
