sunburned aren't all that great, but they're certainly not worse than deerhoof. both bands = middling to fair.

also, the best thing my friend joe could say abt deerhoof after they played here was "they were soooooo cute!!!: arrr, that's not the point. their drummer is great to watch live, though.

Oi, this was the show in the church right? In my town. You know, the town in Massachusetts that ends in -ston.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 5 November 2004 21:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the drummer is terrific, but the bass player has gotta cut the dumb cute shtick. First time I saw them she really bummed me out. I was hoping it wasn't by design. I saw them a few months later and she did the same routine. I walked.

HA HA HA

JUSHINTHUNDERLIGER (deangulberry), Friday, 5 November 2004 23:51 (twenty years ago)

i like satomi's "shtick". she's a good balance for what otherwise could seem like three fusion dudes playing strange little well-rehearsed art songs (which would be fine, but not nearly as great). deerhoof is musically very heady and precise and she makes them much more than that. she's also got a great voice.

you've always got the option of closing your eyes and listening to the guitars anyway.

great to see them written up in the nyt yesterday.

here, here!

ian listens to too much will oldham.

I disagree here - I think Satomi kinda ruins Deerhoof. Her voice, whilst being good ruins the effect of all the different sounds. I bought "Milkman" having heard the excellent instrumental (track 4 or 5) and falling in love with it but the rest of the album annoys me because the singing detracts from what's actually going on in there.

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 6 November 2004 04:46 (twenty years ago)

ok maybe if i played instruments i would "get it" but for now i enjoy getting stoned and listening to deerhoof, and if i am not in the mood for acute japanese girl i will listen to SY thks.

A. BORRELLI (A. BORRELLI), Saturday, 6 November 2004 05:15 (twenty years ago)

Did they play their song "Finally, My Art School Education Paid Off?' Or how about their hit "Ten Years Ago Every Band in Chicago Sounded Like Us?"

But I keed, I keed. I like the band fine. The dudes remind me a bit of ... Storm and Stress? US Maple? Definitely don't like her.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Saturday, 6 November 2004 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Ha, the only Chicago bands I know I guess are like Shellac et. al.

A. BORRELLI (A. BORRELLI), Saturday, 6 November 2004 16:50 (twenty years ago)

six months pass...
I didn't like Milk Man.

Are they still good live?

Should I see them tonight?

ddd, Saturday, 14 May 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

i've still not seen them live. what is weird is that they are much bigger outside of the bay area than they are here, I think. this is true for almost anyone from the bay area though

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 14 May 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

They're great live. Go see. (But then I loved Milk Man, so...)

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Saturday, 14 May 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

satomi is really hard to take. any pointers?

ddd, Saturday, 14 May 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

You mean pointers on how to dig the show despite her? That's prolly a sticking point, she's quite present.

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Saturday, 14 May 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

just focus on the drummer instead. he is incredible live.
