Altern-8 - Where Are They Now?

With all this Cold Feet-type nostalgia for Old Skool rave of the late '80s/early '90s type, surely this must inspire whoever controls the Network catalogue to reissue the Altern-8 album on CD IMMEDIATELY (Full-On Mask Hysteria) as is a stone classic and criminally unavailable in any form at present.

And what the hell happened to our loveable Sheffield mask-wearers after '92?

Also needed: proper CD reissue of Shut Up and Dance's "Death Is Not The End" again with single mixes (I'm sure Marc Cohn'll be past caring by now) and, while they're at it, "Reggae Owes Me Money" by the Ragga Twins which is BETTER THAN THE COLLECTED WORKS OF THE CHARLATANS PUT TOGETHER OR HUNG SEPARATELY!

Don't know, but I hearted them.

I still want an Altern-8 mask.

Nicole, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You "hearted" them?

Masks still available from Sainsbury Homebase.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Since no Sainsbury exists on this side of the Atlantic, I will never live my dream.

Nicole, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Be glad, as no Sainsbury means no Jamie Oliver ads for same.

Where's Dan P. when we need him? Mr. Altern-8 Raveboy himself.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Altern 8 have just released a mix album of hardcore tunes by various artists, including a few of their own I think. Called something like "Euphoria" and was reviewed in the current ish of Q.

Chris Lyons, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Altern 8 album is a fine piece of work - i have it on limited edition vinyl with a bonus 12" featuring the duo's own megamix of tacks from the album - scintillating, i say scintillating stuff

i was thinking about encoding it and sharing it online - i'll get round tho that very soon

i have 'Death Is Not The End' on tape - also not bad - but i never found that Ragga Twins album...tho i'm sure Hard To Find Records in Birmingham has repressed/bootlegged these albums...give them a try

SHut Up & Dance are currently getting coverage on XFM courtesy of Eddy Temple Morris and James Hyman - they recorded a DJ set for the show and played live at the Remix club night recently. They also featured on the Channel 4 documentary Pump Up The Volume where they described how they sped up hip hop breakbeats and mixed them with acid house sounds to effectively invent what became 'jungle' or drum n' bass a few years later - hurrah!

stevem, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you may also be interested to know (if you already didnt) that Mark Archer from Altern 8 released a few house tracks on Network Records after ALtern 8 'disbanded' under the guise of Slo-Moshun including the popular 'Bells Of New York' - which used the 'breakdown to hip hop speed in the middle of the track then speed up again' technqiue to good effect before Josh Wink did the same thing a few years later with his Size 9 track 'I'm ready' - nyice

stevem, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

didn't they die of a vicks overdose? whilst wearing a floro waiscoat and white gloves and gas mask.

on a related note i have a few compilations somewhere in my cassette boxes of Network comps called bio-rhythms.

They drive a childs play-bus through the market towns of Essex. The bus is complete with a bouncy castle, Playstation and an infaltable donkey. They still wear their masks and overalls, suffice to say their weekly takings are meger.

I rather like the Sprout. My kind of poster.

three years pass...
OK, so Tiga's "You Gonna Want" me sings the sample from I think "Infiltrate"? Where is the original line from???

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 October 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, now there's one I could put onto e-bay.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 6 October 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Also, what is Altern-8 saying at the beginning of the track "...we got asterix and space"???

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 October 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

the vocal hook from 'Infiltrate' also features on Bowa's 'Different Story' but I think they came out around the same time so I'm not sure if the latter is the source or it's from something much older.

The intro to the track: "Yeah check this next track out, we got Asterix & Space, watch yer bassbins I'm tellin' yer" (Asterix & Space are/is credited on the album sleeve and is presumably people to do with the sound system A8 were ravin' with at the time.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

Is "You Gonna Want Me" a cover? What is the "I know you gonna want me" from? (I thought it was "I know you probably want me, but when you want me, it might be a different story").

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Substitute "gonna" for "probably".

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

check the parens!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

"Yeah check this next track out, we got Asterix & Space, watch yer bassbins I'm tellin' yer"

I remember an Altern-8 track that said something like that at the start, and then went "no, not bassbins, brain cells - it's had a remix". I think.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

"I know you probably want me, but when you want me, it might be a different story"

Also, I thought this went 'I know, you're gonna want, but in the morning, it might be a different story'. But I'm probably wrong.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Y KANT DAN READ

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

People! Enough with the recriminations! Where does this vocal snippet originate??? Is it some classic disco track?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

Also Y KANT DAN USE the word "substitute" ;)

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 6 October 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

bowa's 'different story is the original source. asterix & space were two stafford rave djs iirc.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 October 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

vahid (vahid), Friday, 7 October 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

...okay, now you've shocked me. And what's the latest hit?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 October 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

bizarre inc = chicken lips

vahid (vahid), Friday, 7 October 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

That's right, I just reread that on the Bizarre Inc thread, which I of course have now revived.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 October 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

Not sure if people are still reading this forum, but Asterix & Space used to work from Warp records in Sheffield. We had the pleasure of DJ ing with them a few times (we were the warm up back then)
I miss those days (or DAZE)

I was actually looking for Full On Mask Hysteria on Spotify a few months ago, for obvious reasons - but it seems to have vanished.

Extractor Fan (Branwell with an N), Tuesday, 8 September 2020 07:47 (five years ago)

More fuss about mask wearing in clubs. Completed it mate.
