I'm confused as to the nature of the beef, could someone break it down?

blogdork, Saturday, 6 November 2004 08:40 (twenty years ago)

kris: canadians can't like southern rap
dlk: oh, but we can

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Saturday, 6 November 2004 08:49 (twenty years ago)

now dlk is paying someone a million dollars to use dlk's gun to kill kris ex. a bit of an overeaction if you ask me.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Saturday, 6 November 2004 08:50 (twenty years ago)

Kris Ex:

(i’m fighting an awful urge to get into the plethora of masquerading whiteboys who love[?] yet overanalyze southern hip-hop, as if there can be some significant pleasure gained from parsing the individual offerings of guys like bun b, lil’jon and slim thug; guys whose musical cannon is best dealt with in an encyclical manner, like tv series dvd box sets. . . maybe tomorrow.)

LeCoq (LeCoq), Saturday, 6 November 2004 08:58 (twenty years ago)

(Yo Alphonse, like I mailed you about, think about S-bone and GN, at this point he's got a lot more balls and word than me, I vouch for him, and actually I'd be ok w him taking my place for a little bit while I sort my shit out.)

LeCoq (LeCoq), Saturday, 6 November 2004 09:12 (twenty years ago)

my reaction to this kind of thing is like, mommy daddy please don't fight!!

(Coq I mailed you back a longwinded reply that touches on subjects from heredity to Enrique Iglesias. holla at somebody real.)

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 6 November 2004 14:53 (twenty years ago)

bun b!?!

"as if there can be some significant pleasure gained from parsing the individual offerings of guys like bun b, lil’jon and slim thug"

??? B-b-b-b-b-b-ut what if i like thinking about music? (I never understand people when they write stuff like this. What's up with humans? They are weird.)

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 6 November 2004 15:02 (twenty years ago)

am i being accused of being a poser for liking bun b because i'm white or because i don't *really* like bun b or can't i ever *really* like bun b since i'm white even if i've convinced myself that i sincerely like him? shit, it's gonna be really hard for me to figure out what music i genuinely like now. and does "encyclical" even mean what it's supposed to mean there?? and is he saying i can't get pleasure from individual buffy episodes? :(

t0ph, Saturday, 6 November 2004 15:07 (twenty years ago)

honestly this is all worth it just for the one really funny part on the comments page:

"I'm still reeling from the admission that you wrote a line where a Bentley drank Cognac. O-Dub must contemplate."

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 6 November 2004 15:15 (twenty years ago)

where are kris ex's comments about this stuff? this sounds great.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Saturday, 6 November 2004 16:26 (twenty years ago)

gotta say, in a way, the comments about whiteboys (or whoever really) overanalysing southern rap are kinda true. the blogs are pretty much evidence of this. same thing for grime really. these guys are getting a bit carried away.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Saturday, 6 November 2004 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm with Al. Kris shouldn't have so wildly shot his mouth off (isn't southern rap pop now? Isn't that how come I know about it?) and dlk didn't need to respond by trying to kill everybody Ex has ever loved.

miccio, Saturday, 6 November 2004 16:34 (twenty years ago)

where can i read about this miccio?

"quasi" means never having to say your sorry

mos def, Saturday, 6 November 2004 21:14 (twenty years ago)

titchy, done the fucking race bullshit for a start (in fact everyone done the fucking race thing already, if you're not clever enough to criticise a writer in any other way then fuck off back to your ironically titled Handsome Boy Modelling School cds and stay there). don't come with that over-analysis shit either, since you're the one who started like 10 hyper-bolic, poorly informed threads on how grime isn't hip hop, you're just as guilty of getting over excited at the Danny Weed mp3 you only just downloaded as any one else who can actually write.

government names doesn't over-analyse. personally, i try to write about a song or a rapper i like or dislike in a purely descriptive style, avoiding over-stated complicated rock-crit essaying and fake gangster posturing in front of my mum's powerbook (which is just as bad as blackface guys, sorry) as much as possible, which is what i see the other great internet writers doing at the moment, ethan & minna, all of government names, prima fassy from spizzazz et al. i think we've got a really good style of writing about rap music that doesn't rely on cliche and established form and is fresh and new. which is bound to attract hate and jealously because we're the big boys now. it's kind of like chino xl when he dissed pac.

not sure what i'm trying to say really but in conclusion, dk smacked it with that post.

scg, Saturday, 6 November 2004 21:43 (twenty years ago)

so gel and weave IS ethan & minna? I thought so but I wasn't sure.

miccio, Saturday, 6 November 2004 21:56 (twenty years ago)

I love all of you guys. Thank you very much.

scg, done the aggressive reflex thing too. go back to your MOP albums and smash a hand through the wall or something. sorry i didnt write a thesis on grime being/not being hip hop, but its more fun without the bearded scholarly tone in my view. save the 'can actually write' swipes for someone who gives a shit. i actually like government names, that isnt one of the blogs i had in mind with the analysis thing (and i didnt say only whiteboys overanalyse, i said ANYONE - i mean, just read through some of the village voice pazz and jop comments from writers on hip hop, writers of all races are flying up their asscracks - it really is a beautiful free-for-all thing), i just dont necessarily like this slightly patronising attitude that seems to sneer down on XXL or source writers or (implicitly) their readership.

lol@big boys and the chino xl/2pac analogy. im presuming that is the only reaction it was meant to provoke.
