7 Magazine - the weekly dance music magazine

7 Magazine - Does anyone else read it?

This week there is a triple edition (all for £ 2!) packed with End of year reviews/ genre overviews/ end of year charts - singles - comps - albums/looking forward to 2002 features and an excellent free deep tribal house CD mixed by Parks & Wilson - one of the tracks reminds me of Covenant the Swedish future synth-pop band.

Hardly anyone mentions 7 Magazine, it is published by DMC the same publishers that originally published Mixmag - before EMAP bought it off them for loads of dosh a few years back. Now Mixmag is one of the worst dance music magazines on the shelf - it's fighting for the wooden spoon with Ministry - as the naffest dance magazine on the newsagent's shelf - all big superclubs, drugs, ibiza, club listings, boring adverts - Mixmag has lost it big time - these days you leave it on the shelf - while ten years ago Mixmag was the essential dance music bible, along with Jocks that became DJ !

I must admit 7 Magazine has constantly improved in 2001 (it origins grew out of the Mixmag Update, then Update magazine), and they have covered a wide spectrum of styles including some analytical overviews e.g post punk/avant funk dance, electro etc.

The closest comparision is that 7 Magazine is a Jockey Slut weekly.

How to subscribe 7 Magazine

So Get down the newsagents and get yourself the triple edition of 7 Magazine !

Mr. Martian, your description makes it sound like your site - but when I we going to receive a free compilation when we visit you, hmm?

You call yrself a DJ, after all...

Tim, I have no connections with 7 magazine (there is no mention of Ulver!) - it is just that 7 magazine never gets mentioned - i just think that for £2 with a free CD, and a end of round up - that 7 magazine should not be overlooked.

Don't worry, I was just joking. Don't know the magazine, but the J. Majick mix cd in the 7 series is pretty good, if only for the excellent excellent "Spaced Invader" remix.

Re: "but when I we going to receive a free compilation when we visit you, hmm"

unfortunately there is no free compilation, but there is free information and sound knowledge!

Sorry - I think I linked you in the blog a few times some point and then each time I update the sidebar I forget I never actually added you there. Will rectify problem! And actually I think we have a lot of similar tastes if you ignore the garage and I ignore the weir undaground metal.

PS. Don't be nasty to Glen - I used to read him religiously a couple of years back, which is why he's there now.

Tim, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim - yes there are some significant areas of crossover between our music interests - apart from stated divergences.

By the way - even I have a link to Glenn as well - for amusement purposes !, mind you he does rate the excellent Cactus World News so respect where credit is due - however I can't see Glenn taking out a subscription to 7 Magazine though ;)

I've browsed through a few copies of 7 Magazine. Some of the interviews have been alright, but on the whole I find the articles and reviews to be a bit dull. I was impressed by the two page article about the "In the Beginning There Was Rhythm" album though. It was very well-informed.

I'm very fed up with dance music magazines in general. "Jockey Slut" is the only one I have any time for, but even that can be rather average.
