Whats up NYC? Ill tell you whats up! Instead of just sitting idly by as the strings of the puppet continue to get pulled we are going

to keep on working to make this a better world! We here at the Knitting Factory are not going to let what has to be one of the biggest

disappointments in our nations history pass without incident. We as a people deserve better, America! We WILL NOT let this tragedy

just happen! Yes, I am talking about the Ashlee Simpson debacle (or am I?)!

Knitting Factory along with H.O.P.E. (Horrified Observers of Pedestrian Entertainment) are offering the good people of America who

have been duped into buying Ashlee Simpson's CD a reprieve; the opportunity to turn in her CD for one of a higher entertainment

quality. Just bring your Ashlee Simpson CD down to the Knitting Factory Box Office between 10 and 5 PM Mon thru Sat and get one

by the likes of Elvis Costello, The Ramones, X, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, Aretha Franklin, Mr. Bungle, Ray Charles, Abe Lincoln

Story, Grateful Dead, Neil Hamburger, Joni Mitchell, and Brian Wilson (while supplies last / selections vary) courtesy of Rhino Records

in replacement.

fuck....screwed up the thread title there....shoulda been:

KNITTING FACTORY CALLS ASHLEE SIMPSON 'PEDESTRIAN ENTERTAINMENT'.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:05 (twenty years ago)

Incidentally, that's the latest Knitting Factory newsletter that I got in my mailbox yesterday.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:05 (twenty years ago)

In this offer, we just found the rockist response to the K. Sanneh article.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:06 (twenty years ago)

I was wondering how long it was going to be before the "R" word was invoked. Ned wins a Budweiser!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:08 (twenty years ago)

Better that than a fucking PBR, lemme tell ya.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:09 (twenty years ago)

Besides which, clearly the 'R' word is either 'response' or 'Raggett.' ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:10 (twenty years ago)

yeah, but i still wouldn't mind a free copy of that brian wilson cd!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:11 (twenty years ago)

This is kind of corny -- I mean does anyone over 13 really define themselves or their music in opposition to Ashlee Simpson?

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:11 (twenty years ago)

the knitting factory's conduct is part of the reason why john kerry lost, y'all do realize that?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:11 (twenty years ago)

This is kind of corny -- I mean does anyone over 13 really define themselves or their music in opposition to Ashlee Simpson?

yup -- how many buskers do you see singing ashlee simpson songs as opposed to beatles/zeppelin/marley/dylan songs?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:13 (twenty years ago)

To paraphrase Ian McKaye (in one of his more articulate moments): "We don't make our music to spite the music industry, we make our music in spite of the music industry"

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:15 (twenty years ago)

hey didnt the fucking knitting factory los angeles host ashlee's first show (as seen on on mtv)? I call bullshit.

still bevens (bscrubbins), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:50 (twenty years ago)

Holy shit, did they really? Seems more like a House of Blues gig, I'd say.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 7 November 2004 00:59 (twenty years ago)

Pedestrian entertainment? I'm not familiar with that. (The only new stuff I listen to is whatever I think will still sound good to me in 25-30 years.... granted, I have heard about 30 seconds of Ashlee's music.) Has she been able to get more young Americans to exercise?

Andy K (Andy K), Sunday, 7 November 2004 01:14 (twenty years ago)

KF: Hello, is this Ashlee Simpson?

AS: Yeah. Who's this?

KF: This is the Knitting Factory.

AS: For real? Are you a bunch of old ladies who sit in a circle and make scarves and caps for the winter?

KF: No. We're about art, not commerce. Anyway, we'd like to let you know that you can come down here to our place and exchange a copy of your CD for Mr. Bungle.

AS: Mr. Who?

KF: Mr. Bungle.

AS: Did you just say "bunghole"?

KF: Bungle!

AS: Oh, did they do "Bunghole in the Junghole"?

KF: No, that was Jethro Tull.

AS: Actually I think that was Uriah Heep.

KF: We're certain it was Jethro Tull who did "Bunghole" --

AS: Ha ha! You just said "bunghole"!

KF: Look, whatever. We'd just like to let you know that we think you're pedestrian.

AS: Oh my god I'm walking right now!

KF: You don't understand...

AS: What?

KF: Nevermind! *hangs up*

Andy K (Andy K), Sunday, 7 November 2004 01:22 (twenty years ago)

andy i kiss you

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 7 November 2004 01:25 (twenty years ago)

V. good indeed. (Mind you, I actually think Jess's negative take on her stuff months back holds -- it's clear she's the bee's knees for many, though.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 7 November 2004 01:32 (twenty years ago)

haha - wasn't jess' negative take "look at the schnozz on her"?

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 7 November 2004 01:39 (twenty years ago)

AS: Actually I think that was Uriah Heep.

Somehow, I sincerely doubt Ashlee has ever heard of Uriah Heep.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 7 November 2004 01:42 (twenty years ago)

alex is right, i'm pretty sure ashlee is under fifty.

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 7 November 2004 01:43 (twenty years ago)

alas, she was lipsynching the interview

tricky (disco stu), Sunday, 7 November 2004 01:44 (twenty years ago)

haha - wasn't jess' negative take "look at the schnozz on her"?

Snarf. I think it was part of it. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 7 November 2004 02:19 (twenty years ago)

Is this the same Knitting Factory that fills the neighborhood around Leonard Street with tiny little punk rockers every weekend?

dlp9001, Sunday, 7 November 2004 02:20 (twenty years ago)

Ashlee calls back later that day...

KF: Knitting Factory.

AS: Hello. I have this crappy Ashlee Simpson CD and I heard y'all are having some deal where I can bring it in and get something that is closer to resembling art.

KF: Yes, that is true.

AS: Excellent. This Ashlee Simpson CD is horrible!

KF: Indeed.

AS: Have you heard it? I mean it's really bad.

KF: Well, no, but it's pretty apparent...

AS: Yeah, what's up with her Milli Vanilli acid reflux bullshit? So, anyway, do you happen to have Very 'eavy Very 'umble by Urethra Heep?

KF: What? I think you mean Uriah Heep.

AS: No, Urethra Heep.

KF: It's Uriah Heep.

AS: Whatever. Do you have it?

KF: No.

AS: What do you have then?

KF: The Ramones, Ray Charles, Abe Lincoln --

AS: No shit, Abraham Lincoln made records?

KF: Not that Abe Lincoln.

AS: Oh, okay, so what else?

KF: Aretha Franklin --

AS: Urethra who?

KF: Very funny. Aretha Franklin.

AS: Haha, just joking! No, seriously, anyone else?

KF: X, Mr. Bungle --

AS: Mr. Bunghole? I bet that sounds like ass.

KF: Mr. Bungle.

AS: Hahahaha!

KF: *slams phone*

Andy K (Andy K), Sunday, 7 November 2004 02:24 (twenty years ago)

yeah...it's also the same Knitting Factory that was the only place to go within blocks for years untill all the condos and fancy restaraunt's arrived that put squid in the window then complain about KF patrons standing on the street.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 7 November 2004 02:25 (twenty years ago)

Which would explain why I can't drink a cup of coffee on the front steps of my gym without the KF police telling me that I won't be allowed to buy a ticket for Crystal Ship or whatever's playing there if I don't move.

dlp9001, Sunday, 7 November 2004 02:31 (twenty years ago)

the KF didn't have police until they were repeatedly attacked for noise complaints and crowd complaints by later arrivals.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 7 November 2004 02:48 (twenty years ago)

I guess the question is what better benefits the community: 66's egg rolls or tomorrow night's Punk/Oi! SKAMPILATION 1Oth ANNIVERSARY SHOW! at the Knitting Factory.

Ok, seriously. I'm sympathetic to their plight.

(so I got that one, anyway)

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 7 November 2004 03:12 (twenty years ago)

The name "Knitting Factory" did carry some genuine weight once, right? I'm not just imagining that in a fit of nostalgia for college?

Hurting (Hurting), Sunday, 7 November 2004 04:49 (twenty years ago)

They used to be pretty cool when they were on the Bowery, I think, though I could be wrong.

o. nate (onate), Sunday, 7 November 2004 05:17 (twenty years ago)

Is this the same Knitting Factory that fills the neighborhood around Leonard Street with tiny little punk rockers every weekend?

i would drive down to nyc tomorrow if there was a street with tons of eight-inch tall punk rockers running around. it would take two of them just to carry a can of beer.

m0stly clean (m0stly clean), Sunday, 7 November 2004 05:51 (twenty years ago)

Just like those tiny dudes from Willow!

"beer!"

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 7 November 2004 06:39 (twenty years ago)

Just like those tiny dudes from Willow!

That was unnecessary.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 7 November 2004 06:42 (twenty years ago)

That Willow dude was also the main Ewok.

they can both go to hell so long as Pakistani Tea House remains. The Knitting Factory pretty much defined a certain type of downtown nyc sound. Remember John Zorn? But then the hip bands moved to Mercury Lounge(this is circa 95...it's been a while since the Dead C played the Mercury Lounge) and the avant-garde elite moved over to Tonic. The Knitting Factory sorta fills the gaps between Tonic, Bowery Ballroom and Wetlands or whatever. They have the two lower floors, the second of which was recently re-designed to be pretty useful.

The sidetrack going on here is terrifying.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 7 November 2004 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Dan absolutely otm about the Pakistani Tea House, though I wish they had fish more often. Without the KF we wouldn't have been graced with Soul Coughing.

dlp9001, Sunday, 7 November 2004 15:02 (twenty years ago)

There are sometimes some good shows at the Knitting Factory. But, like almost all venues in NYC, it's loud and expensive and full of pricks most of the time. It's kind of respectable, actually, that they still put on punk/whatever shows--I guess the rest of you are all too cool for fourteen year olds.

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 7 November 2004 15:20 (twenty years ago)

they only started doing those 14 yr old punk shows when they lost a good portion of their "scene" to Tonic.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 7 November 2004 17:30 (twenty years ago)

The Knitting Factory once built its reputation on sort've avant-garde, post-no-wave, free jazz sorta stuff, though, no? The first shows I ever remember seeing at the old Knitting Factory (when it was on Houston between Mulberry & Mott...it's now a bar called Botanica and a Tapas restaurant, I believe)..was the Meat Puppets and King Missile.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 7 November 2004 17:38 (twenty years ago)

i went to a good dj set at the knitting factory basement end of last year. plenty pop, too. was it an aberration?

this, as a gesture, is pretty awful and stupid, but there must be a couple hipsters out there buying ashlee cds (obscured underneath their pavement resissues) just for the exchange value, which might be rather funny to observe

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 7 November 2004 17:55 (twenty years ago)

seventeen years pass...

I walked by a “Coming Soon” sign for a new Knitting Factory location in North Hollywood — I thought that was interesting, as I also have particular associations with the Knitting Factory – but checked out their website and I guess things have changed:

BRAND DEVELOPMENT
Got something cool that would look even cooler with our logo on it? We pride ourselves on being hip across multiple demographics. We’ve long been associated with rock ‘n roll, hip hop, dance culture, heavy metal, R&B, and even experimental jazz. That said, our logo can be just as easily found on a KF Brooklyn t-shirt worn by a forty something exec reposing at a sidewalk café as it is on the KF skateboard deck under the 16-year-old racing by.

The Knitting Factory logo. Unique to everyone.
