Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Everything released/charted/peaked somewhere at some point during 1985.

Strongo's version.

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Me want. (Please.) Why, I'll even sell your first born baby for it. *watches steam rise from Andy's ears*

(This also serves as a reminder that http://www.cdrgo.org/ is indeed functioning but will yet be updated...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I like yours better Andy. Less rock, more house, electro, and hip-hop. I think you have more Prince (not Prince) too.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

this is a very english cdr700, but i like it.

btw, aside from the listing of songs, is there some sort of ilx subculture where people trade cdr's of these? and are they necessarily cdr's of mp3s as opposed to old-fashioned music cdr's? because i can play the latter and not the former (at least, i have no interest in playing music on my computer). and i'd really like some of these. especially jody's cdr700s from the 1960s.

amateur!!st, Sunday, 7 November 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

is there some sort of ilx subculture where people trade cdr's of these?

My link -- which is to donut bitch's page on the matter -- is supposed to be some sort of ground central for that. But DB has had to concentrate on other things lately.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 7 November 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Why burn 5 cds when you can just burn one?

Audio snob.

x-post

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 7 November 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Roughly 20-25% = very? Or do you mean that so much of this was popular in the UK?

Andy K (Andy K), Sunday, 7 November 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i just meant it seemed to me to have an english sensibility. you're american though, right?

amateur!!st, Sunday, 7 November 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

if so: do you think you could make me audio cdr's of this? i could copy some things for you in return.

amateur!!st, Sunday, 7 November 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a very American cdr700.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 7 November 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

(I'm not complaning - I'm just saying that even the British choices tend to be those that were relatively big in the US)

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 7 November 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

oh.

amateur!!st, Sunday, 7 November 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a very Transcaucasian CDR

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 7 November 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Transcaucasian CDR

this sounds like a third-string factory records band

amateur!!st, Sunday, 7 November 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha omg of COURSE i need this ahem.

(amst: yes we do trade these, I have nearly the whole set; missing the '87 and Sarah Pedal's '65 and '66, though I am working on a '66 one myself so hey . . . )

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Sunday, 7 November 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Spookily I was listening to Model 500's No UFO's when I opened this thread. Needless to say I would like a copy too, '85 being one of my fave years for music. Though they're all good to a greater or lesser extent.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 7 November 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone interested in a copy should email me (swaps preferred), though I fear I won't be able to get to most requests until early '05. I'm backlogged as it is on promised CDRs.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 8 November 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Andy K, don't you dare trump me when the CDRGO 1983 I'm working on hits the press by the break of December!

(And you DID trump half of my planned Mine The Gap 1985.. Arrr, Andy, ARRRRRRRRRRRRr I Say....)

;)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

He's back!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

For CDRGO issues, I will never leave.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I have an alternative 1970 (the third one!) almost done, DB. I also drew up a provisional "long list" for '71 but narrowing that down to CD-R 700 length (!!) is going to be a challenge.

Jeff W (zebedee), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Please don't allow my insomniac whims to prevent you from doing what you've planned on doing. I'm hoping I can have '76-current covered by 20??.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank You Andy!

"Lookout Weekend" is pretty great, although it is pretty much the same excellent song as "When I Hear Music" (which was Debbie Deb's big single in '83)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

eleven years pass...

My playlist.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 9 June 2016 01:30 (nine years ago)

Great list, but Time - Jungle Love, Teena Marie - Lovergirl, and Debbie Deb - When I Hear Music are all from 1984

Josefa, Thursday, 9 June 2016 06:16 (nine years ago)

Well, in the United States "Jungle Love" and especially "Lovergirl" charted in early or spring '85 (peaking at #4 in March 30).

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 9 June 2016 11:48 (nine years ago)

I guess this comes down to the mismatch between the pop and R&B charts. "Jungle Love" hit the R&B chart in Sept '84 and peaked by year's end, while "Lovergirl" entered the R&B chart in Oct '84 but had a long run there peaking in early '85. It doesn't matter anyway, I was just flashing back to high school thinking, "wait that doesn't seem right.." 1984 as a year had better chart songs than '85 imo.

Josefa, Thursday, 9 June 2016 17:24 (nine years ago)

Fantastic list, Alfred. I've dissed '85 in the past but more careful consideration has turned up some true gems. If I may add some of my own picks:

Animotion - 'Obsession'
Chaka Khan - 'This Is My Night'
Culture Club - 'Mistake No. 3'
DeBarge - 'Who's Holding Donna Now'
Eurythmics - 'There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)'
The Family - 'Screams Of Passion'
Five Star - 'All Fall Down'
Jesse Johnson's Revue - 'Be Your Man'
Julian Lennon - 'Valotte'
Kim Wylde - 'Go For It'
Klymaxx - 'Meeting In The Ladies Room'
Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam - 'I Wonder If I Take You Home'
Mary Jane Girls - 'In My House'
Midnight Star - 'Operator'
Red Rider - 'Lunatic Fringe'
Rene and Angela - 'I'll Be Good'
Sheena Easton - 'Sugar Walls'
Starpoint - 'Object Of My Desire'
Steve Miller Band - 'Bongo Bongo'

oh totally! As I've posted on FB, release dates often mean "year of impact." No real wrong answers. I don't wanna be a pedant.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 9 June 2016 17:41 (nine years ago)

I thought about "Object of My Desire" and "Sugar Walls."

I think I had "I'll Be Good" on my list; I can't check now. Street Called Desire is so good.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 9 June 2016 17:42 (nine years ago)

Ah, so you did!

Manspread Mann (Old Lunch), Thursday, 9 June 2016 17:44 (nine years ago)

"I Wonder If I Take You Home" is my favorite record of '85 and probably all of the 1980s
