Josh Stoner, Sunday, 7 November 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

ive heard the single, kinda liked it. its very wierd, but im not sure if its in a good way or not.

JD from CDepot, Monday, 8 November 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

she sucks ass

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Monday, 8 November 2004 04:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Peter Hook and Bernard S. sing/play on one album track, according to the Ceremony list.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard two songs. Both were awful, and almost certainly destined to be championed by pop-ist schmucks for most of 2005.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

the correct word is papish

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

You're nuts, "What Are You Waiting For?" is great!

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

There is no middle ground on which we can meet. Thus, I retire from the field.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Hasn't anyone spotted the Lene Lovich influence???????

Dr. Scott, Monday, 8 November 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

what are you waiting for really reminds of me of "smalltown boy," i mean the chorus.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

as I said elsewhere, the jacques remix is the shit!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

and completely destroyed the dacefloor last Thursday (granted, it was Jacques playing it)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a jacques remix?!??!?!?!?!??!?!??!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

TO THE BATCAVE!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish he'd work on a whole album with Gwen/Madonna or some vocalist. he obviously loves doing the remixes.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously! i wonder if he's working on some of his own stuff now...

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he probably is.

On Thursday he played our club, and opened with a track which must be his own, it had a massive sample of some Abba song, I can't think which, just the hooky keyboard riff, one of my friends reckoned it was from "Voulez Vous".

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh! tell me more about his set!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

he played mostly his own tracks, the No Doubt remix, the Gwen Stefani remix, finished with the Felix remix and he also played his Zoot Woman remix, Hypnotize off the LRD Darkdancer record, and the Psychedlic Waltons remix, and maybe the Madonna remix too!

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

All I've heard is the single, which was, of course, dire. The cover isn't helping matters.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

My sentiment exactly.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I find the whole of GS to be criminally mediocre. (No, I haven't heard the new album.)

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I kind of like that album cover. She's meeeelllltttiiinnngg!

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mind the single, it grows on your despite the video ripping some bjork and madonna clips off wholesale.

choo choo the herky jerky dancer (papa november), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha, nice name, "choo choo."

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

the video may actually be directed by mark romanek (which would explain the bjork and madonna ripping off nicely...)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

the cover is cool

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh and something about these lyrics is a little reminiscent of the insanely horrid "rap" from Madonna's American Life:

Look at your watch now
You're still a super hot female
You got your million dollar contract
and they're all waiting for your hot track

choo choo the herky jerky dancer (papa november), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

xx-post

Thanks n/a.

choo choo the herky jerky dancer (papa november), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Except the rap was the best bit about American Life, the single is insane and great, and the cover has at least had a bit of thought put into it. Okay, most of those thoughts are WRONG, but still!

three weeks pass...
OK. Never cared for No Doubt, liked that single GS did with Eve, but otherwise couldn't give a hmph. Just out of curiosity I slsk'd the album and 4 songs in I'm in love. WTF?

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I never cared about No Doubt either, I like a few singles here and there, but this album is bonkers and magnificent. I mean it really is a bit insane, two tracks in she interpolates "If I Was A Rich Girl" and three tracks in she shrieks B-A-N-A-N-A-S. wtf is exactly right.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

And "The Real Thing" with that Hooky bass in the intro - yipes!. Really an insane mashup of styles and influences just used in all the right ways. Loving this record.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

linda perry isn't getting enough credit for the single.

jones (actual), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

(especially considering GS cried about having to work with her - GOOD CALL)

jones (actual), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm glad to hear that a lot of you are liking it too. It seems like a pretty divisive record right now, but the people who like it enjoy the hell out of it. My favorites are "What You Waiting For?," "Luxurious," "Cool," and "Bubble Pop Electric."

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

worst record of the year.

chaki in charge (chaki), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the thing she did on the MTV europe awards.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Bit disappointing that the single and first track on the album is the BEST track.
But it's a good CD. "Whatchoowaitinfor" screams LENE LOVICH to my new wave attuned ears.

DR SCott, Wednesday, 1 December 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Chaki is a wise and good man.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno. My vote's for that new U2 piece o' turd as Worst /Most Overhyped record of the year. The GS record at least pulls off what I think it attempts, which is to pay homage to the music she loves to listen to, poor taste or not.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i think they are both awful but gwen actually has worse lyrics than bono if you can imagine that.

chaki in charge (chaki), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

At least Gwen hasn't promoted her new record by booking the Clinton Presidential Library and a moving Manhattan flatbed truck. Just saying.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

by the way, the correct way to make a Lene Lovich comparison is à la Bruce LaBruce – "it's so Lene, I Lovich!"

jones (actual), Thursday, 2 December 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"rich girl" interpolates the fiddler on the roof song in pretty much exactly the same way as lady saw's (at least a year old?) "if i was a rich girl"

m. (mitchlnw), Saturday, 25 December 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

why aren't people excited about "hollaback girl"?? so reinvented pop-fascists pfork lambast it for lacking "club potential", big fucking deal - shit is bananas!! neptunes extremist beat of the year (ok so it's kinda like 'belly dancer', but who heard that anyway)! when the guitar comes in for the first time i get the shivers!

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 26 December 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

(ps thanks spizzazzz)

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 26 December 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

> "rich girl" interpolates the fiddler on the roof song in pretty much exactly the same way as lady saw's (at least a year old?) "if i was a rich girl"

Lady Saw did a version of "Rich Girl"? I always assumed Gwen's version was taken from the '99/2000 rai version of the song by Tara

H (Heruy), Thursday, 26 May 2005 07:39 (twenty-one years ago)

There've been HEAPS of renditions of "Rich Girl" lately. My favourite is the B-Boys' "Shake Da Body/Rich Girl" which Tom bigged up on NYLPM a while back.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 26 May 2005 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, which track does jacques do a remix of?

i dont like the diplo remix of hollaback girl much, though i like the non-remixed version plenty.

i dont think ive heard any of the other tracks

i live under a rock, i know

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 26 May 2005 08:09 (twenty-one years ago)

As long as that rock is not Paul Simon.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 26 May 2005 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

it is not paul simon

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 26 May 2005 08:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"Gwen Stefani may still be enjoying the enormous and puzzling success of her solo album"

has it been uch a success??? only HollabackGirl has been a big hit, no?

"wait, which track does jacques do a remix of?"

HG, I think.

nathalie's baby (stevie nixed), Thursday, 26 May 2005 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

No, he remixed what I prefer to refer to as "the first, uber-annoying one."

Negativa, True Believer (You know you love it when I'm dressed in drag) (Barima), Thursday, 26 May 2005 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"has it been uch a success??? only HollabackGirl has been a big hit, no?"

No. "Rich Girl" hit number one too, and the album has been comfortably esconced in the top ten for months.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 26 May 2005 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god i sooooo want one of those cameras. des-per-ate-ly.
aces.

piscesboy, Thursday, 26 May 2005 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"wait, which track does jacques do a remix of?"

"What You Waiting For"

No. "Rich Girl" hit number one too, and the album has been comfortably esconced in the top ten for months.

"Rich Girl" peaked at #7, actually.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

in the overall creepy context of the harajuku girls thing, the camera manufacture is pretty minor.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

oh right, gwen stefani is the one with the creepy context here...

she's so cultured!

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Gwen Stefani or Jessica Suarez?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 May 2005 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Hollaback Girl, but Gwen's voice isn't really the best for it...I keep imagining how awesome it would be as a Kelis song instead.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 26 May 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

has it been uch a success???

haha seriously?!

deej., Thursday, 26 May 2005 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It's fine with me if Suarez finds Gwen's succes puzzling (I find many other people's succes puzzling) but what's so borderline racist about selling cameras?

JoB (JoB), Friday, 27 May 2005 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a joke about the stereotype of Asian tourists with cameras lurking around here somewhere.

i'm surprised not to find more about 'luxurious'

i was struck by this song, driving through dubuque. it has an interesting structure.

i'm surprised she's back so soon! but happy!

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

xxxxtremely silly idea to rush back for the arse end of 2006, what can she hope to achieve? everyone's quite happy to wait. it just looks like she's desperate to head off fergie, who in fact should release 'glamorous' (which was once gwen's 'luxurious' rmx)(superhackneyed factoid, holla) the minute the gwen drops just to rub it in.

also a live version of 'wind it up' was already on the internets when l.a.m.b. was out and proud. i fear this new album will end up being offcuts and rushjobs :(

rtccc (mwah), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

terrible tune anyway. perhaps she owed andrew lloyd webber a favour.

rtccc (mwah), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

actually yeah i remember now, this was just a track for the catwalk shows! it was a lot oompa loompier crazier then i seem to recall, big long cartoon speedy gonzalez codas and stuff

rtccc (mwah), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

wtf!
was Jewel not available?

I hate it and I want to dance to it.
Why is her stuff so ridiculous? It's better (worse) than London Bridge.
I like the delivery at "keep going girl it's your night" probably because it sounds like Lady Sov or MIA, one of those.

this holds up so well (loveangelmusicbaby), classic status for me. cool, rich girl, hollaback girl, luxurious- ridiculously good. harajuku girls, the real thing, bubble pop, what you waiting for, crash- also great. Cool is pretty much perfect.
listening to a lot of charlie xcx at the same time and gwen's vocals are like this fantastic mellow version of charlies, only gwen has immensely better production behind her here.
