I hate myself, but my latest guilty pleasure is...

"You and I" by Celine Dion. I've not only been sucked in by the French Canadian songbird, but an Air Canada commercial to boot. Should I just shoot myself now?

I'm actually a little upset that the full song doesn't contain the little trill she does at the end of the commercial.

cybele (cybele), Sunday, 7 November 2004 02:54 (twenty years ago)

And on my itunes playlist it comes right after Capleton's "Leaders Let the People Down."

cybele (cybele), Sunday, 7 November 2004 02:56 (twenty years ago)

pleasure is pleasure! take it where you can!

i've liked some celine dion songs too--not unconditionally, heaven knows, but they're not unredeemable.

i mean, there's a reason that titanic song was EVERYWHERE.*

*aside from being in "titanic" i mean

amateur!!st, Sunday, 7 November 2004 02:59 (twenty years ago)

It means you are fully embracing your Canadian heritage, cybele. (I might be lying.)

How ya doin' BTW? I haven't seen you around much! Yer a good sort.

I like 'Hero' by Chad Kroeger. It stirs me.

Just the other day, I was watching this video and really noticing what she does with her voice. I don't know if I like it as much as "My Heart Will Go On" yet, which was obviously classic.

Something I was wondering, when thinking about those Bob Dylan vs Celine Dion vocal technique threads, was, what would people think if Celine Dion was actually singing Dylan songs . . . i.e. is it actually that her technical proficiency as a singer is somehow less expressive or less creative than Dylan's voice (which seemed to be the argument for at least some people) or is it just that people think her voice is used on less meaningful material? She actually does some interesting things with her vocal timbre in the chorus of this song - I like how she gets more nasal on the "higher" part.

Chicago's "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" is also pretty undeniable, yes. Just don't start with "The Power of Love".

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 7 November 2004 04:01 (twenty years ago)

I really want to hear this now. (I realize that if I turn on MuchMoreMusic, it will probably be on.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 7 November 2004 04:04 (twenty years ago)

peter cetera wore a BAUHAUS T-SHIRT OMGWTF

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 7 November 2004 04:07 (twenty years ago)

Celine does have an interesting voice (Frank Kogan is nuts about it). I just rarely like how she employs it or her material. Good call, Sundar.

I don't think any song should be a guilty pleasure. I did realize one genuine guilty pleasure in my life: World's Deadliest Police Chases. I think shows that exploit genuine human misery should be illegal, but I'll be damned if I'm not glued to my seat when I stumble past that show.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 7 November 2004 04:08 (twenty years ago)

I don't think any song should be a guilty pleasure.

You are most wise.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 7 November 2004 04:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm pleased that Anthony has come up with a genuine guilty pleasure though - I love Police Chases, despite my general forror at myself for doing so.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 7 November 2004 04:38 (twenty years ago)

As Kurtz says in Heart of Darkness - "The forror, the forror".

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 7 November 2004 04:39 (twenty years ago)

Have you considered suicide?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 7 November 2004 14:26 (twenty years ago)

i have a serious hankering to hear a trance version of "turn me on," but i don't think one exists.

"forro" = "formal horror"?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Sunday, 7 November 2004 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Yes, that is what I meant...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 7 November 2004 17:15 (twenty years ago)

cybele you should get celine's photo book where she dresses up like a flower and poses with thousands of newborn babies!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 7 November 2004 19:04 (twenty years ago)

perhaps we should start reconsidering the merits of rockism

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Monday, 8 November 2004 05:56 (twenty years ago)

I've spoken many times about how UN-unpleasant I find Celine's music. (Also Whitney Houston's, but that's irrelevent.) At her absolute worst, I find her remarkably easy to ignore. (Fortunate, since I'm forced to hear her at least once daily.) And at her best, she's not bad. And yeah, I like "You And I" too.

And it's got NOTHING to do with "embracing my Canadian heritage", Ned; if that were the case, then surely I would consider the Barenaked Ladies to be something other than one of the worst groups ever!

REVIVE!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 27 August 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

I still proudly keep albums by then-seemingly-esoteric 90's Brit-indie also-rans like Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Senseless Things, Ride, Curve, Pale Saints and Chapterhouse on my shelves
Ride. "Also rans." Oof.

Everything on your list looks to be worth owning/hearing. I'd kind of like to see a "guilty pleasures" list from someone whose actual top 40 more or less matches your list. Seems like the hipster guilty pleasures (apologies for any appearance of calling you a hipster) always turn out to be top-40 pop or classic rock, so what are the secret vices of Jimmy Buffett's biggest fans?

dlp9001 (dlp9001), Sunday, 27 August 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think Parrotheads, et al, don't have large enough collections to include guilty pleasures or anything much beyond the genres they like best. And they certainly wouldn't view them as vices. I-Mearly-Like-Music types seem happy with 40 or 50 discs. If someone owned say, Buffett's greatest, the Cars s/t, Buena Vista Social Club, and "What's Goin On" it wouldn't be hard to predict the rest the other 38 discs.

bendy (bendy), Sunday, 27 August 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

Just a few days ago it occurred to me that I've never heard a Sheryl Crow song I didn't like. And there must be at least a dozen of 'em.

Monty Von Byonga (Monty Von Byonga), Monday, 28 August 2006 04:10 (nineteen years ago)

She's really not bad. Try Sheryl Crow or the greatest hits comp.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Monday, 28 August 2006 04:18 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno...having to hear 'em all at once, one after another, rather than just letting them sneak up on me, would probably break the spell. (Just like when I acquired Cat Stevens and Carpenters comps.)

Monty Von Byonga (Monty Von Byonga), Monday, 28 August 2006 04:25 (nineteen years ago)

Hahahaha, she probably is best taken in small doses. Some of the non-single album tracks are kind of dodgy.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Monday, 28 August 2006 04:28 (nineteen years ago)

Just a few days ago it occurred to me that I've never heard a Sheryl Crow song I didn't like

same for me, I haven't actually kept up with the albums beyond TNMC but I've loved every one of her subsequent singles except for that 'Steve McQueen' POS.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Monday, 28 August 2006 04:29 (nineteen years ago)

I seem to have successfully blacked that one out of my memory.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Monday, 28 August 2006 04:34 (nineteen years ago)

The radio remix of A New Day Has Come is pushing me towards the edge. One of the guys in Herman Düne described the part at 3:15 as one of the best moments in pop history(or something like that)

I'm not THAT exited, but it still sounds great. In a weird way.

It's Celine Dion man..

i was just thinking the the other day how embarrassed i was about admitting to liking "fireflies", and here i am doing it again.

it's that catchy synth riff at the intro that gets me, plus the styx-like overproduction
