i worked at folkways! yes the cover art is often amazing from a design perspective. i have a few covers on my wall, for some really random/rare LPs like "a study in infant speech development"--they are gorgeous.

most were the work of this one guy, something clyne or something. i tried to find some info on him in the folkways archive but had little luck. i actually think someone should make a coffee table book out of his cover designs.

those cd covers are obviously designed by somebody else (actually they have both an in-house design team and a series of people they regularly contract work out to), but they have mostly kept up the high standard of design. the earliest folkways cds weren't so attractive (though much better than, say, arhoolie) but the newer stuff is often gorgeous.

those two roscoe holcomb cds are all-around classy: aside from the lovely covers, the liner notes by john cohen are brilliant, the best i think i've ever read. and of course the music is stunning. see also cohen's "mountain music of kentucky" collection.

I can't find images of some of my favorites (old woody guthrie and leadbelly 78s where the cover art probably isn't on any CD release). The Elizabeth Cotten one at the top follows a folkways formula (but a good one) that I like a lot, with a thick bar of an odd color above a black and white photo.

I lived in Indonesia for a year, and saw many pictures of Indonesian rock stars that looked just like the guy on that cover. I remember especially one guy named Ikang Fawzy who wore some pretty amazing get-ups. Unfortunately I can't seem to find any pictures of him on the web.

Re: The Indonesian cover, I have often struggled, in between laughs, with what exactly that guy is DOING.

He's sort of flying at you with the guitar in one hand, but his other hand is raised in a karate chop-like position. Is he going to fly at me and then karate chop me, or his he going to do a karate chop windmill chord on the guitar?
