just read in the allmusic review for the Saint Etienne comp "You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone" that most of their album titles are inspired by the beach boys in some way. I don't see the connection for most of them (guess i'm not as big a beach boys fan as I thought) Someone educate me.

I'm not a Beach Boys fan either but I know for sure that So Tough is one of this albums.

"You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone" is the name of a Beach Boys song from the "So Tough" album of the same name.

'Tiger Bay' references a particularly successful Beach Boys concert at the Cardiff Arena.

Good Humor is after what's written on the hat of one of the Beach Boys in a photo of them, possibly on an album.

Foxbase Alpha isn't a reference; it's place that Bob and Pete imagined as teens in Croydon. Foxbase Alpha is a mythical place where all the attractive people are, because they sure weren't in Croydon, or so the story goes..

Finisterre is a reference to the shipping forecast.

I've nevr been sure whther to belive that, as I've seen the packages Foxbase & Alpha appear on the same page of a software catalogue (around 1990).

Yeah, as I say, that's the story, but they're pretty cheeky at times, and are possibly lying.

The beach boys are a surf band (sort of)
Surfin' is generally carried out in the sea
The sea is made of salt and water (and various pollutants)
Saint Etienne's fifth (proper) studio album was called Sound of Water
