only heard a few songs but it somes off to me as quite twee-py (in a good way)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 8 November 2004 17:38 (twenty years ago)

get the album.

doomie x, Monday, 8 November 2004 17:39 (twenty years ago)

What Doomie said

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:19 (twenty years ago)

yup.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:20 (twenty years ago)

it's pretty good

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:21 (twenty years ago)

it's just ok

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:30 (twenty years ago)

it's as if margo tenenbaum had a sister and they started a band; if keren ann was from the upper east side went to art school & dropped out; if the langley schools kids had been forced to cover songs from sebadoh's first album & memphis minnie albums instead of the eagles & neil diamond; etc.

stokely, Monday, 8 November 2004 21:16 (twenty years ago)

it's one word - Cocorosie.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:33 (twenty years ago)

it's ok for a few songs at a time.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:34 (twenty years ago)

i got through waves...
i hated it at first
then for a while i was really into it
now i struggle to get through one song
voices are a "you have to be in the right mood" kinda thing i guess

rentboy (rentboy), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:37 (twenty years ago)

"you remind me of baseball, tow-trucks and movies"

jed_ (jed), Monday, 8 November 2004 22:35 (twenty years ago)

rentboy pretty otm. I thought it was pretty great the first few listens, and then it suddenly became irritating. It's worth a couple listens, I guess.

Lingbert, Monday, 8 November 2004 23:36 (twenty years ago)

I could barely make it through one listen -- they're just too precious for me.

JC-L (JC-L), Saturday, 13 November 2004 18:25 (twenty years ago)

You really need to be in the right mood for it - it's very summer, dreamy, crackle of one voice against smooth of another, little found-object sounds, oddly claustrophobic and secret-language-y. A few songs feel self-indulgent, saw them live & were kinda un-good because so much of the charm of the album is in how it's recorded and, er, stuff. But I definitely like.

'by your side' is fucking gorgeous.

cis (cis), Saturday, 13 November 2004 23:49 (twenty years ago)

that was 'like & recommend' obv.

cis (cis), Saturday, 13 November 2004 23:49 (twenty years ago)

i think it's intercapped.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 13 November 2004 23:51 (twenty years ago)

by your side = oh my god!!!!

piscesboy, Thursday, 18 November 2004 13:02 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
somebody who thought i'd like this made me a copy last week - for the most part, it really is pretty much unbearably precious, though 'by your side' with it's DIY kanye-isms (= chipmunk soul and clicky clacky drums) is rather cute and track 7 (i think that's the one) is a very very pretty guitar instrumental with toy motor car noises on top (that remind me a little of the motorbike samples on that one disco inferno song). but as for the rest - this is what happens when you let your kids lick the icing off the bowl.

jermaine, Saturday, 19 February 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

i heard about them from friends in paris. they're in paris too, right?

Actually, it's great.

stupid fuckign carpet thing (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

i was listening again the other day, it does have its moments.

jermaine (jnoble), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

but is it cool that 2 white girls use racial slurs in their songs? not really

breezy, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

It was cool when Patti Smith did it.

stupid fuckign carpet thing (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

and...errr, Nina Gordon!

stupid fuckign carpet thing (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

racial slurs? i suppose i havent been listening v closely at all.

jermaine (jnoble), Thursday, 14 April 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

isn't that a traditional song that they covered though?

gem (trisk), Thursday, 14 April 2005 02:50 (twenty years ago)

someone so needs to remix/re edit/ rearrange BY YOUR SIDE so that, say, the verse and the chorus arent actually over one another at points, and they could have a number one with that thing.

piscesboy, Thursday, 14 April 2005 06:24 (twenty years ago)

yeah, which song has the slurs?

Lingbertt, Thursday, 14 April 2005 07:34 (twenty years ago)

the third track

stupid fuckign carpet thing (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

it's traditional racism though.

stupid fuckign carpet thing (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

the album was in my top 5 of 2004, for definite. Absolutely weirdly compellingly lovely. And they're interesting live, too.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

it may be them covering a song, or it may not be either way, it's more offensively lame than straight up offensive, but I know people that have taken offense to it

breezy, Thursday, 14 April 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

hmmm... why is it offensive? i wouldn't expect this reaction here. i mean, i guess it's possible, but it's not very likely that they are racist, is it?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

it's presumtuous I think

i quite like "noah's ark" and the "ohio" cover (i haven't heard the original, maybe it's better, prob not). sure, the same one formula for everything - shittily recorded backing beats + affected 'folk' twang + yearning, but it's quite relaxing working music

jermaine (jnoble), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Just saw them live and I have to say that I wish I didn't like their music, because the degree of overwhelming artifice that they front triggers every rock crit issue I have. For fuck's sake, they had a dvd playing a kaleidoscoped Care Bears movie in the background while a guy from Paris beatboxed and girl 1 played the piano with bare middriff howled operatic arias and girl 2 did that downsouth Anticon drawling hiphop. And yet, the music sounds good. From now on, I stick to the album.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 28 July 2005 04:46 (nineteen years ago)

I have to stop posting now as I have a light buzz and I'm being roughly incoherent.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 28 July 2005 04:49 (nineteen years ago)

no, no, that was very clear. like a really bad trip. the only thing missing was yoko.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 28 July 2005 04:55 (nineteen years ago)

Okay: I wanted to like this, but I absolutely, nails on a chalkboard am bothered by it, the skygreen leopards are precious and ethereal, but really beautiful. This just. Listens souless.

Feminine HI GENE!, Thursday, 28 July 2005 05:40 (nineteen years ago)

have they a new LP out?

piscesboy, Thursday, 28 July 2005 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the 'Noah's Ark' LP.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

forks. i love how you are calling them out. they have MEGA TUDE too.

breezy, Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

I'm of the opinion that they're going to be seen as IMMENSELY influential in a few years; they're already starting to snowball in popularity. In many ways, I think a new generation of po-mo Britneys and Xtinas may take the "naive artist route" and a wave of 'Mainstream Art Pop' (with a likely hollow center) may not be too far off in the future.

Me: "Hi, I'm a fan!"
Sierra: "Oh."

Again, I wish I didn't like the music... but that kind of cognitive dissonance is helpful to shake up preconceptions, right? Right?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

i asked them what they thought of people writing them off as a gimmick. they're fine with that, they don't see the big difference between their gimmick and 50 Cent's gimmick. and they're right, the music's good and that's what matters

rizzx (Rizz), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

i don't mind their music, but i do think they are tremendous bitches, and that doesn't help me like the music, no matter how hard I try and forget it. i also think their "gimmick" is really insincere, and pretentious.

breezy, Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

they have an attitude, but saying they're bitches is pushing reality. i've interviewed them 3 times and apart from the usual "we didnt know we had an interview" shit they were just nice

rizzx (Rizz), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

I thought their live show in London a couple of weeks ago was immensely entertaining. Personally, I wish i liked their music more.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

The "tremendous bitches" comment is the nastiest comment on the internet if you google on the phrase "cocorosie are". The next worst thing I could find anyone saying about the Casady sisters is that they're a bit twee. Which I suppose makes Breezy a tremendous bitch.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

The funny thing is that I still like them.
I just don't think I will see them live again, thank you.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 28 July 2005 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

nastiest comment on the internet? surely you haven't been using it for that long....

breezy, Friday, 29 July 2005 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

Well, is there some substance behind your remark about the sisters, or were you just in a nasty mood? Isn't this what Popbitch is for? (But even they'd want an actual story...)

Momus (Momus), Friday, 29 July 2005 07:20 (nineteen years ago)

It's the same deal with Avril Lavigne and Alison Goldfrapp. Every time I see them on TV (or read an interview), I find my ability to unreservedly love the music kicked in the knees a bit. *sigh*

sean gramophone (Sean M), Friday, 29 July 2005 07:31 (nineteen years ago)

I know what you mean, the "4 real" carved into women's arms turns out, all too often, just to be scrawled lipstick.

Momus (Momus), Friday, 29 July 2005 07:55 (nineteen years ago)

In genres like punk, rock, electronica and indie/avant stuff, part and parcel of being a "true woman" seems to be an inferiority-complex-fuelled hyper-attitude. Compare this with exemplars in other genres (Beyonce, Christina, Kylie, Nellie McKay, Norah Jones) and it's pretty darn annoying.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Friday, 29 July 2005 08:20 (nineteen years ago)

wouldn't sharing such an incident be even more bitchy?

just rest assured it's not fabricated

I would like to be your new A&R guru. Clearly whoever's at the helm right now isn't working out.

Love,
