Is anyone going to see them live? I'm definitely going to their show at the Bowery Ballroom on December 2nd, but I'm not sure what to expect. I would guess that they would be rather meticulous in recreating the sound of their studio recordings. Is anyone hitting the NYC show or anywhere else on the tour? If you've seen them live recently, please tell all.

Nice. I'll probably go to the Chicago show.

jaymc, Monday, 8 November 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I will *definitely* be at the L.A. show!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

C'mon, NYC! I don't want to go to this one alone!

B-b-b-b-but where is "If It's Not For You"?

Please tell me that they play that one live. It's my favorite!

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 18 November 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

And "Holdin' On Together"! What about that?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 18 November 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

when I saw them in London, they played the former, and not the latter. can't wait to get a copy of this...

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 18 November 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

If anyone gets this on slsk, please let me know.

Okay, so long as they play "If It's Not For You."

They've got to know that is their best song, right?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, "If It's Not With You." That's probably one of my five favorite songs of the year, and I still fuck up the title.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Finally got this (eBay!), it's *Rockin'* and a lot of fun. I can't believe the singer can remember all those non-sequiturs!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 January 2005 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, it's copy-controlled, but it will apparently be released in the USA in February (and probably not copy-controlled). Anybody know a good hack? It's the EMI kind.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 January 2005 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.dsg.cs.tcd.ie/~haahrm/copying-protected-cds/

Seems to be a good guide. I have never actually had to do anything special with my plextor/liteon drives though. I just put them in and ripped them with Exact Audio Copy or grip and they ripped glitch free.

svend (svend), Thursday, 6 January 2005 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

god, every single copy-controlled CD I've ever put into my computer has been ripped by iTunes without so much as a blink. Actually, a couple have popped up with a window saying "To use this CD, we must install some crappy software. Click OK or Cancel", to which i click cancel, and proceed to listen to the CD in iTunes. who knows.

Is this the Live CD that's out in feb.? I'm really excited to get that; the tracklist is GREAT.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 6 January 2005 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Its on itunes right now, you pirating-ass motherfuckers. If yr that eager to hear it, pony up the 99 cents (which I would do if my windows ME could handle itunes.)

deej., Thursday, 6 January 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

That post was firmly tongue in cheek btw, i'm a soulseek user/abuser.

deej., Thursday, 6 January 2005 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It's on slsk too.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Thursday, 6 January 2005 05:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I ponied up $20! and had it shipped from Sweden!!! I read about the American release the next day. Their tour manager told me they were only sending 2000 copies to the USA, but I'm assuming the Astralwerks release will have it's own American pressing. Oh well, it is the only copy controlled disc I have which is a novelty.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 January 2005 06:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, I just ripped it, no problem (although it went a little slower than usual).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 January 2005 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It's really great, lots of great variations in the tracks. The background vocals are great. And I'm still in awe of his command of reams of what amounts to profound gibberish.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 January 2005 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"Everything is Everything" is very zen.

deej., Thursday, 6 January 2005 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

There's also a guitar bit that's reminiscent of Stardust!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 January 2005 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost
A homeless drug dealer in Berkeley used to say that phrase everyday. I wonder how old it is, and the origins.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 January 2005 06:33 (twenty-one years ago)

can he really sing that smoothly? I've always assumed it was a studio trick, because his voice is SO SMOOTH.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 6 January 2005 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

His voice is smooth. It's kind of amazing how little he flubs the lines. He seems very committed to doing the vocals correctly and exactly. "If I Ever Feel Better" is amazing. That's also the song that has the little Stardust guitar part I mention above.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 January 2005 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not on their street team, but I would be if they had one.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

How were they when you last saw them, Spencer? I love the albums, but I've heard they're not very good live.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously whoever told you they sucked live must've saw a weird show or is allergic to fun. They are really great and tight live. No worries.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Apr 10: Chicago, IL @ Metro (18+)

i might be there

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, Matthew. April/May is looking insanely good for NYC shows!

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 05:48 (twenty-one years ago)

My sister saw them in LA late last year. She said they were awesome. Uhh....heres some pics:

kate/thank you friendly cloud (papa november), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 06:23 (twenty-one years ago)

They are great live! The vocals are amazing. It's a feat to remember so many nonsensical lyrics! The live album is great too. The live show adds a lot of force to the Alphabetical tracks.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

your sister is totally hawt!

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

They are great live! The vocals are amazing. It's a feat to remember so many nonsensical lyrics!

I was wondering about that - If I Ever Feel Better (AWESOME) is fucking verbose! Anyway, they'll be in Toronto soon, so I'll likely be going.

Tantrum (Tantrum The Cat), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Again, check out the live disc for an amazing version of that one! There's even a bit of Stardust - "Music Sounds Better With You" guitar lick in there.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

peoples on slsk need to be sharin' this bitch.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Def. going to the NYC show. Thanks to Spencer.

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Hope you don't hate it!

Also, the disc I have is copy-protected, I don't know if that's why it's not being shared.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on, dude -- it's nothing a felt-tip pen couldn't fix.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

My boy is interviewing Phoenix tomorrow on his radio show. He is too timid to interrogate them about their wanton Steely Dan plagiarism--any ideas for interesting conversational gambits?

I suggested some kind of elaborate and annoying "Jukebox Jury" setup but was shouted down.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Why not just ask them, "do you like Steely Dan?" They will probably say yes and talk about it.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

(I have the live album shared now, btw. For a limited time.)

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I fear the only vaguely intelligible thing I can say is to echo Aerodynamic's comment.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

What's yr slsk name, Matt?

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Why not just ask them, "do you like Steely Dan?" They will probably say yes and talk about it.

The what-to-ask-Phoenix committee's anti-Steely Dan bloc vetoed any questions like that. Keep in mind that this is Tulane University radio and the usual interview hovers somewhere between US Weekly and Jane Magazine in terms of depth.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that I want to get my boy to get all Charlie Rose on them--we're just trying to get away from "So, uh, what's it like being French?"-style questions.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe you should have a Steely Dan record within view of them, or have a Steely Dan song playing in the background, and maybe they will comment on it.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm trying to think of a Steely Dan song with a Phoenix feel to it.

Baaderonixxx le Jeune (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"Any Major Dude..."

adam (adam), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Peg"???

Tantrum (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I would say that Phoenix are like Steely Dan, but do not really sound or feel like Steely Dan.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they're similar in that they produce pop music that incorporates, centrally, elements or signifiers that can be identified as "cheesy" -- the smoothness, occasional lounge-y vibe, etc. Phoenix are obviously not on a plane anywhere near SD when it comes to whatever concept of "songcraft" is applicable here but I think the line that connects the two is their shared disregard for the relative (un)coolness of the sonics they are playing with.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

So you're saying they're soft-rock? Also, why wouldn't they be on the same "plane" re: "songcraft"?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Steely Dan have better songs.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I disagree.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Phoenix is so much more Hall and Oates than Steely Dan.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

And yeah, it's soft rock. But it's a specific flavor of soft rock: jazzish, playful re: genre. There's more depth to the similarities between P and SD than, say, P and Richard Marx or Michael Franks or other people under the large, pastel, inoffensive soft-rock umbrella.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Colin is correct.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I kinda think of them as being sorta like George Michael in some ways. (The singer-songwriter.)

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Obviously the jazzy soft-rock is there (Level 42 also), but we can't forget their French house roots. Also, I think "Everything is Everything" owes as much to "Like I Love You" as anything by Steely Dan.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think anyone was assuming you meant the kid from Arrested Development, Matthew.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I think "Everything is Everything" owes as much to "Like I Love You" as anything by Steely Dan.

BINGO!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I was definitely not expecting the full-on rock band approach thing they do live. A little disappointing though, after Dogs Die In Hot Cars, most anything would sound awesome.

Also one dude was wearing a Member's Only jacket and a trucker cap.

adam (adam), Thursday, 24 March 2005 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

Whoah...they're playing Madison Square Garden. Are they really an arena band now?

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 11 July 2010 00:31 (fifteen years ago)

Totally would've wanted to see them 2 years ago..
