can't think clearly about the rest at the moment.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Weird — everyone thinks that "O, Dana" is the best song on the record? I mean, I like the song, but...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:43 (twenty years ago)

i'll probably change my mind.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:46 (twenty years ago)

I'LL DO A FLIPFLOP HA HA

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:46 (twenty years ago)

still nothing.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:47 (twenty years ago)

"Stroke it Noel" is my favorite, I'd have to think about the rest.

57 7th (calstars), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:50 (twenty years ago)

see guys, rank all of the songs.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Before that, let me just say that the version of "Nature Boy" on there is astonishing.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:56 (twenty years ago)

ehhhh - i dunno - this is one of those cases where i think most of the bonus tracks are almost detrimental to the album. i know it's not a definite track order anyway, but everything after 'take care' always seems out of place to me.

bonus tracks:
1. dream lover
2. nature boy
3. whole lotta shakin goin on
4. downs
5. till the end of the day

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 8 November 2004 22:03 (twenty years ago)

Really? When I first heard the record, I had no idea "Nature Boy" was a standard — so it never stuck out to me in the slightest. To this day, when I think the song, I think of this version, and it seems to fit nicely...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 8 November 2004 22:10 (twenty years ago)

when i first got this i absolutely hated "thank you friends" and "jesus christ". now they are tolerable.

artdamages (artdamages), Monday, 8 November 2004 22:13 (twenty years ago)

When the second drum kit kicks in 'Jesus Christ' -- that's the part that gets me. Never mind the sax solo.

1. Jesus Christ
2. Kangaroo
3. Stroke It Noel
4. Holocaust
5. O, Dana

DOPESMOKER (smile), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 18:11 (twenty years ago)

That seems like a lot of work, eddie...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 19:33 (twenty years ago)

It is, it is a lot of work, but I listen to that album about once a year so I generally grit my teeth and do it.

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:18 (twenty years ago)

Haha @ eddie hurt: I program it to the Italian boot LP that I first heard which had the best sequencing. The Ryko sequencing (and the subsequent liners contradict itsself!!!) is piss poor.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:24 (twenty years ago)

I can't do it, but Kanga Roo is my number one.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:29 (twenty years ago)

What were some of the other sequencings of this?

I think that "Kizza Me" works as an opening number, but what else is out there?

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:37 (twenty years ago)

1. Stroke it Noel
*The next four are interchangable depending on mood*
2. Kangaroo
3. Take Care
4. Blue Moon

john'n'chicago, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:43 (twenty years ago)

actually, include "For You" in the 7-9 (now 10) group

john'n'chicago, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:46 (twenty years ago)

1 = best, 14 = worst.

1. Kanga-Roo
2. Holocaust
3. Big Black Car

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:55 (twenty years ago)

u mad?

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:57 (twenty years ago)

Slightly confused.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:58 (twenty years ago)

I don't get why 'Kanga Roo' is held in such high regard. It has some drunkenly precise timing at the beginning, and the line 'I first saw you, you had on blue jeans' is pretty great. But then it just disintegrates...

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:58 (twenty years ago)

"Kanga-Roo" is a magically fucked up song. It's just devestating, made all the more so by what a total wreck it is structurally and rhythmically.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:59 (twenty years ago)

shit, "Kanga Roo" is just so exquistely sung, as is most of "Third."

>Haha @ eddie hurt: I program it to the Italian boot LP that I first heard which had the best sequencing. The Ryko sequencing (and the subsequent liners contradict itsself!!!) is piss poor.

the first LP of this album, the PVC release from '78, has what I've always thought is the best sequence, so that be how I program it when I really want to hear it all the way through (which isn't all that often). Absolutely, the Ryko release sequence isn't good at all, and according to Rick Clark's liners Chilton and Dickinson could agree only on the first three and the last song in the sequence. I always thought beginning it with "Stroke It Noel" and ending with "Thank You" made perfect sense. What is the song order on the Italian boot you refer to, gygax!? The PVC is:
Stroke It-For You-Kizza-You Can't Have Me-Nightime-Blue Moon-Take Care (side A); Jesus Christ-Femme-O, Dana-Big Black-Holocaust-Kanga-Thank You.

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 23:39 (twenty years ago)

haha it appears that the Italian boot I got was a boot of the PVC boot! It's the same sequence and it makes so much better sense, listening to it that way.... The Kissamee/You Can't Have Me prior to that NightTime/Blue Moon/Take Care suite especially, it's a good set-up.

The Ryko liners say they could only agree on the sequence of the last song but the liners say HOLOCAUST!!! (or something other than ends the proper sequence on the Ryko CD, nb: I am not a rock critic).

KangaRoo is so impossibly perfect. If you ever get the chance to play a Mellotron, immediately listen to this song afterward. Excellent on every level. My favorite song on the record easily.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 00:43 (twenty years ago)

yeah, kanga-roo = gorgeous, especially that second half (love the feedback)

mattp, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:19 (twenty years ago)

I've had this conversation with gygax! before and I totally agree re: the PVC sequence. Sure that's how I heard it first, but it really does seem to make the most internal sense, song by song. The Rykodisc sequence is really a head-scratcher.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 23:12 (twenty years ago)

and the cover art for the Ryko is dumb. I love the black-and-white photos of Alex and Jody on the PVC issue. Looks like Alex's left arm is resting on the mellotron...

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Thursday, 11 November 2004 16:21 (twenty years ago)

oooh, when i get home tonight i'm gonna program that PVC sequence; that sounds so much better than the ryko sequence, which is the only way i've ever heard it.

i do like "kizza me" as an album opener, but everything else on the ryko disc is just so random.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 11 November 2004 16:33 (twenty years ago)

"take care" at the end is the right thing to do.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:13 (twenty years ago)

...and the tasty way to do it.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:21 (twenty years ago)

either "Take Care" or "Thank You Friends" works at the end. But I like that little bit at the end of "Thank You" when someone says
"I...did something wrong." Indeed.

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Friday, 12 November 2004 01:00 (twenty years ago)

Hearing that "Jesus Christ" was supposed to start Side Two makes more sense now. That goofy fifteen-second calliope intro works better with that.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 12 November 2004 01:41 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

it seems like there should be a 33 1/3 book about this album

There was even a brief period when I preferred Sally Forth. (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 20:42 (sixteen years ago)

There's one in the works for Radio City, I think...

scott pgwp (pgwp), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 20:51 (sixteen years ago)

eh not as interested in the production of that one. I mean, its a great album but there are fewer "how did they do that?" moments for me than there are on Third/Sister Lovers

There was even a brief period when I preferred Sally Forth. (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 20:58 (sixteen years ago)

i didn't 'get' this album until last week.

Pantheism F. Mohair (res), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 22:29 (sixteen years ago)

7. blue moon
8. holocaust
9. kizza me

Pantheism F. Mohair (res), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 22:36 (sixteen years ago)

The sequencing issues with this album are so weird -- I fell in love with Third/Sister Lovers via the Ryko version, so that sequence sounds "right" to me, though the above arguments make sense too ... Can't think of another favorite record of mine that doesn't have a "definitive" version. Maybe "I Often Dream of Trains" by Robyn Hitchcock -- that one has been futzed with many times ...

tylerw, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 22:40 (sixteen years ago)

Track sequencing or even this crazy thread: C/D: Eight-track alternate sequencing?

followed closely by Kangaroo & Holocaust (I only like Big Star songs covered by 4AD artists, apparently). All the rest are swell as well.

(Pillboxxx) (Pillboxx) (Pillbox), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 23:13 (sixteen years ago)

I have got to go back and dig out my copy of this album.

ilx chilton (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 15 January 2009 02:14 (sixteen years ago)

do y'all know the story about nature boy? jim dickinson was walking with a crutch or a cane at the time when they were recording. jim was playing piano. in the background of the song you can hear one of jim's kids, who i guess is now a musician in his own right (though it was kinda downhill from there), playing on a little toy organ. and half way through, he bumped into jim's crutch, resting against the piano, and knocked it over. the really really beautiful thing is that you can hear that it makes alex smile, and after you hear the crutch, you can hear the smile creep into his voice. i seem to remember it's at like 2.20?, but i forget. it is a nice story.

schlump, Thursday, 15 January 2009 06:20 (sixteen years ago)

aw i can't hear any of that on my rykodisc copy ;_;

re: conversations above, i've never known any tracklistings other than the rykodisc. it'd be fun to know it some other way. i pretty much love every song though... i think mixing them up would well mix things up. does the rykodisc miss anything?
