Ugliest cover ever btw.

jellybean (jellybean), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Good lord, that looks awful.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 00:10 (twenty years ago)

God help me I'm seriously considering getting this.

From a Land of Grass Without Mirrors (AaronHz), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 00:12 (twenty years ago)

Send me all your money now, Peter, as you clearly have no idea what you're doing with it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 00:47 (twenty years ago)

"Do Something" is great, and it's nice to have "I've Just Begun Having My Fun" on it too.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 01:03 (twenty years ago)

That is so flagrantly not her body on the album cover. What I mean is, it's not an airbrushed version of her body -- it's just simply not her body. Weird.

Nostalgia for the Old Cineramadome (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 01:12 (twenty years ago)

Well, you know what HER body looks like nowadays:

She looks greasy in a decidedly unerotic sorta way.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 01:50 (twenty years ago)

I used to hate Britney because I was a corny indie roXist. Now I just hate her because she's just kind of boring. "Toxic" is fun but imagine what it'd sound like with Kylie on vocals.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 01:57 (twenty years ago)

I believe it's her body, but it's her body from 2-3 years ago with her new head photoshopped on top. The outfit would make hiding the digital jiggery-pokery really easy.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 01:58 (twenty years ago)

if you replaced the album title with a cool logo, that could be a pretty good cheesy metal album cover.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 01:59 (twenty years ago)

and maybe a twisted FAR OUT LANDSCAPE behind her? and like a snaked coiled around her feet?

Spinning Down Alone You Spin Alive (ex machina), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:01 (twenty years ago)

or just replace "britney spears: my prerogative" with "scorpions: virgin killer." that might work.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:03 (twenty years ago)

she needs an axe and chainmail across her cleavage

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:20 (twenty years ago)

can someone out there who's good with photoshop make it so?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:23 (twenty years ago)

That's nobody's body... that torso has been photoshop-stretched like so much greasy silly putty. And her hips look all CGI and shit. The whole thing's really pretty gross. She's such a moist owl drag mom. And those creepy granny doilies in the background.... jesus.

Nostalgia for the Old Cineramadome (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:25 (twenty years ago)

Bagsy

moist owl drag mom, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:31 (twenty years ago)

Is she too cold, or is she too warm?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:37 (twenty years ago)

what the hell are cgi hips?

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:38 (twenty years ago)

Is she too cold, or is she too warm?

is she a warm-blooded creature?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:38 (twenty years ago)

wtf does "moist owl drag mom" mean?

m0stly clean (m0stly clean), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:40 (twenty years ago)

is she a warm-blooded creature?

Yes.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:43 (twenty years ago)

well that clears that up.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:48 (twenty years ago)

Clearly you've either never set fire to a tapir, or frozen a jerboa to death, but warm blooded animals can be both too hot and too cold.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:51 (twenty years ago)

CGI = computer generated imagery, I think. Like Jar Jar Binks and shit. She definitely looks Jar Jarian there.

And I think she's neither too cold nor too hot; she's clammy and fetid, menopausal and amphibian.

Nostalgia for the Old Cineramadome (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:51 (twenty years ago)

menopausal? She's 23!

From a Land of Grass Without Mirrors (AaronHz), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:56 (twenty years ago)

Brigitte Bardot IS Cruella DeVille in 101 Dalmatians: The College Years.

Local H has a cover of "Toxic" up on their website (click on the the pic to hear it). I think its fun (not as good as the original, but come on) but I'm weirded out by the idea of Jim DeRo saying "now THIS I can enjoy without guilt."

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm more surprised Local H are still going! (Credit to them for that, they were the ORIGINAL TWO PIECE GROUP MAN [note: I am probably lying]).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:04 (twenty years ago)

I'm only half-surprised because lyrically they were always ABOUT how there was no point to what they do. Their self-awareness, humor and lucidity make it easy for them to keep going (the last album lacked focus though, it was their first without a big producer - the previous albums had Jack Douglas and Roy Thomas Baker at the helm). Plus they have a different drummer. As long as Scott Lucas is alive, so is Local H.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:07 (twenty years ago)

I seem to remember Chuck E saying they were the only grunge band (of sorts) he liked.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:08 (twenty years ago)

Them and Everclear (who also benefitted from tight, persona-creating lyrics).

Anyhow I'd never buy this because "Toxic" and "Everytime" are the first singles of hers I've wholly enjoyed (maybe "I'm A Slave 4 U"). I could get never get off on the Max Martin bombast. I'd probably just check out In The Zone.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:09 (twenty years ago)

Here's the breaker for me: is "I Got the Boom Boom" on it?

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:23 (twenty years ago)

Uh, at risk of being accused of being a rockist, do you guys really, actually, unabashedly, unironically enjoy Britney Spears???

I find her music alternately dull/insipid/downright irritating.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:44 (twenty years ago)

Do people really listen to things ironically? Life's too short for pretending to like things when no-one gives a shit anyway. And yes, I certainly straight-up like a lot of her music, as I'm sure the others on the thread do.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:55 (twenty years ago)

i once wrote that a GH record is the only britney record i'd ever buy, but i'm not going to buy this.

amateur!!st, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:58 (twenty years ago)

(Kevin), I agree, in theory, but I've been at parties where people I know put on Toxic with this strained giddiness that gives me the impression of irony. I guess I also wonder if she's become the litmus test for proving you're not a rockist. But if you genuinely enjoy it, more power to you. I'm not against liking pop music, I just really don't like Britney Spears (or Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson, Avril Lavigne, etc.)

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 05:00 (twenty years ago)

I don't think liking Britney could be an anti-rockist litmus test - if you don't like her, that's fine. I think if you dislike her based on rockist principles, rather than how it sounds though...Anyway, I'm sure we could all do without another discussion about rockism.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 05:02 (twenty years ago)

Well, if I take your word for it that you genuinely enjoy her music, you have to take my word for it that I genuinely dislike it, not merely on rockist principles.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 05:04 (twenty years ago)

I like Toxic. Its really good. I was surprisingly impressed w/ My Prerogative. Um...didn't really like much else. I donno. Just not enough to interest me.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 05:04 (twenty years ago)

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 05:10 (twenty years ago)

she looked alright at the MTV awards... not sure what happened between then and now.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:47 (twenty years ago)

She's been absolutely awesome recently (photos aside) and if she can actually keep up her newlywed break this time round, she can only return stronger and better looking (hopefully).

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:49 (twenty years ago)

I don't even care about the CD anymore, I'm all about the DVD. 20 videos supposedly, including the originally UK only ones.

From a Land of Grass Without Mirrors (AaronHz), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:50 (twenty years ago)

"Overprotected - neither classic nor dud
Boys (Co-Ed Mix) - not quite classic

I'm really surprised you don't love these Tim! Especially as you (quite rightly) think of Stronger as a super-classic - Overprotected is a bigger, harder, hookier version of it."

I do like them a lot! "Classic" is a strong word! "Overprotected" is pretty good but I just don't think it had the shock impact of the songs like it on the previous record (eg. "Stronger" and "Don't Go Knocking On My Door") and it's not as vicious as some of the other, really bombastic tracks on Britney. Also I think the clip lets it down a bit (the clip for "Stronger" is amazing). I guess my comments made it sound like I only liked it as much as "Me Against The Music" which is not the case, although I like the latter track too.

"Boys (Co-Ed Mix)" is great, though I sorta think in retrospect it would have been better for Britney to only release one Neptunes single. I like how all the songs on In The Zone sound like totally different entities, anything less post-Max Martin feels like a half-measure.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 13:03 (twenty years ago)

I've always thought Overprotected to be one of the best Britney/Max Martin tracks, I think it just came at the wrong time. After the Neptunes produced tracks it just sounded like a backwards step.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 13:08 (twenty years ago)

boys and stronger clearly her besy tunes
chances of her promoting "these elegant victorian dolls" on QVC in ten years 90%

lukey (Lukey G), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 13:20 (twenty years ago)

What interests me greatly is how she either is emblematic of a certain near-perfection or alternately is a sinner who can barely do any right in many eyes -- there's *very* little room, it seems, for a more neutral 'sometimes works, sometimes doesn't' medium. (I also still believe Kate St. C and I are the only people who rate "Oops" *miles* beyond the astoundingly overrated "Baby One More Time," but correct me if I'm wrong!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 13:46 (twenty years ago)

But Tim, "Overprotected" is where the whole "maaaaeeee" thing began! That bit where all the bombast clears out of Britney's way and she concludes the phrase with "no-one else - but - MAAAEEEE" is possibly the ultimate Britney moment.

Looking at this track listing I'm realising how many of Britney's best moments weren't even singles - "Before The Goodbye", "Cinderella", "Brave New Girl" - which is kind of surprising.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Or were B-sides/extra tracks like "I Run Away", "When I Found You", "Autumn Goodbye" or "Walk On By", not to mention the unreleased "She'll Never Be Me".

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:04 (twenty years ago)

"When I Found You" is on Britney, isn't it? It's on my copy, anyway.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:08 (twenty years ago)

On the non-US versions, it is an album track, yeah. In the US I don't think it was ever released. ANd it's her best ballad!

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:21 (twenty years ago)

JtN reviews it!

the bellefox, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:49 (twenty years ago)

"Maybe they are a little scared to admit liking it in front of corny indie fuchs like yourself."

Hey, screw you buddy! I'm no corny indie fuch! I'm an artfaggy jazzbo!

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:33 (twenty years ago)

I also still believe Kate St. C and I are the only people who rate "Oops" *miles* beyond the astoundingly overrated "Baby One More Time,"
I haven't given the Oops v Baby battle too much thought, probably because they sound exactly the same.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 18:51 (twenty years ago)

So it's been argued. But Kate and I focus in on the bassline in "Oops," which is the key difference. (Also, the requisite indie cover of the song -- in this case from Fuck -- works a hell of a lot better than Travis's of "Baby" ;-) )

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Ha, I haven't heard that "Oops" cover (I have heard the "Baby" cover, and I quite like it) -- I will try to track it down.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 18:59 (twenty years ago)

It was on some Italian compilation that pulled together a bunch of covers, including Life Without Building's "Pop Life" I seem to recall.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 19:02 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember "Born To Make You Happy" at all, I can't recall any singles off the first album after "Crazy". and it went to #1, supposedly? weird.

on the .com album tip, there was a 90's techno-y metal band called Pitchshifter who had an album titled www.pitchshifter.com, which was funny because at the time that wasn't even the address of their official website (although it appears that it is now).

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:36 (twenty years ago)

They're still around?

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:36 (twenty years ago)

apparently! or at least they still have a website.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:39 (twenty years ago)

"Born To Make You Happy" is, as noted above, her absolute finest moment so far. I heard some weeks ago that it wasn't on this excuse for a compilation, so I guess I'll have to wait another 10 years for the boxed set.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:41 (twenty years ago)

as if recording artists of Britney's magnitude of sales and popularity don't end up with dozens of best-of's in their catalog eventually! c'mon, you know this is just the first of many, there'll probably be a new compilation after every other album of new material from here on out.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:54 (twenty years ago)

britney: super hits
britney: absolutely the best
britney: best of 21st century masters
britney: artists' collection
britney: the definitive collection

etc.

I'll just download the UK only tracks and be done with it.
Still want the DVD though.

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:30 (twenty years ago)

I don't really undestand how anyone with any taste can enjoy B. Spears either.

There is a great mashup of 'I'm A Slave 4 U' with Wire's 'Being Watched' that I really enjoy though here: www.dinbot.com

Was this meant in earnest?

Looking at this track listing I'm realising how many of Britney's best moments weren't even singles - "Before The Goodbye", "Cinderella", "Brave New Girl" - which is kind of surprising.

And Anticipating! Gosh, that made the 00s list.

I agree that Oops is better than ...Baby, but only just. The part with the astronaut pushes it over the hump.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:14 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone else wonder whether the cover art's disconcerting photoshop job may have been intentional?

Atnevon (Atnevon), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:21 (twenty years ago)

The remix disc kicks ass:
Toxic is remade into a fuzz bass jam.
Everytime becomes a even more lush almost Daft Punkesque dance track.
Breathe On Me is spacey and ambient and eight minutes long.
Outrageous is a funky-ass Junkie XL remix
Chris Cox Megamix mashes the hooks of Baby One More Time, Crazy, I'm A Slave 4 U, Oops I Did it Again, Stronger, Everytime, Overprotected and Toxic together into one five minute track.
