Musical Metamorphosis Mix CD Challenge!

I'm not sure if this has ever been done but I want to see folks put together a CD length mix of artists that slowly metamorphoses from one extreme to the other over the course of the CD; Where each song sounds like it could have been performed by the performer of the song that proceeds it. Ideally you will be able to slowly, subtly get the listener from the first song on the CD to the last without them realizing that it's a group of different artists. Points go to the person who can make the largest genre leap from first song to last in the smoothest, most subtle way. For example, if you can smoothly transition from a first song by The Beatles to a last song by Dizzee Rascal, you beat out the person who successfully travelled from The Beatles to Nirvana. Anybody up for the challenge?

I hope this doesn't sound like a complement to Nirvana, but that's not that big a stretch, really.

Beatles to Dizze Rascal, on the otherhand...that's a challenge.

That's why I said that the Beatles -> Dizzee Rascal would be more impressive.

John Fahey to Chic?

We can assume the listener has no prior knowledge of the tracks, of course, but that doesn't mean they're a musical bozo, just a made-up person whose life experience is determined, in fact, by their not having heard the tracks in question.

I may start a side-thread taking side-bets on the Fulcrum Artists. Or just make a list rather than wheezing on.

Man, this sounds like exactly the kind of brain twisting knot tying thing i'd devote the next 6 months of my life to. Where to start? Where to start?!

>Where each song sounds like it could have been performed by the

Holy shit! I have long fantasized about doing this. We must have some music-obsessive genes in common or something.

I think the way I was thinking about it, the goal was to 1) make a nice, flowing mix, and 2) to show similaries in songwriting style between seemingly disparate artists...

John 2, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Although... I might have also thought along these lines:

It's less about having two songs (by two different artists) that are similar, than it is about two songs that could seemingly be coming from the same place--possibly the same artists, though it would be apparant even to a new listener that they are not (male to female voice is a good giveaway). Thereby showing songwriting similaries, though not necessarily "Song X" sounds like "Song Y". Just that they could have been on the same record, etc etc...

Also sometimes it's too hard to go from one artist to another... I could do something like this...

[REM song]
"Downbound Train"
[2nd Springsteen song]
[Song that sounds like Springsteen by other artist]
[Song that sounds like above...and so on...]

Beatles to Dizzee Rascal, on the otherhand...that's a challenge.

Bonus points to anyone who can do this without playing the DJ Dangermouse joker card...

how about a bonus if you can do it chronologically too?
