djdee2005 (djdee2005), Saturday, 13 November 2004 21:14 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
I can't believe "Charlene" has only been mentioned twice on ILX (both by Begs2Differ)

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 27 November 2004 23:05 (twenty years ago)

Guy's voice is wonderful, the song is a bit boring in the instrumental department.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 28 November 2004 04:27 (twenty years ago)

seven years pass...

Such a great year. Mario's "Let Me Love You" has got to be my favorite song to hear late at night on the radio. There's a station in town that often plays it at 2 or 3 in the morning, and it guts me every time.

Evan R, Saturday, 25 February 2012 18:26 (thirteen years ago)

i'm incapable of singing along with that song without changing the "good love" line to "good dick"

DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Sunday, 26 February 2012 03:35 (thirteen years ago)

what was the 411

J0rdan S., Sunday, 26 February 2012 03:37 (thirteen years ago)

whats the 411

D-40, Sunday, 26 February 2012 03:49 (thirteen years ago)

A sidelined, forgotten UK girl-group who released a handful of great singles that didn't set the world alight and so ended up dropped. Which is a shame, Dumb was a fantastic single.

boxedjoy, Sunday, 26 February 2012 11:58 (thirteen years ago)

god i completely forgot about the 411

lex pretend, Sunday, 26 February 2012 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

Wikipedia says they were English. Were they one of those acts that essentially didn't exist in America? Looks like they never charted here

Evan R, Sunday, 26 February 2012 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

i did not know that estelle was kicking around in 04, unless that's a different estelle

J0rdan S., Sunday, 26 February 2012 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

She was, stylus mag covered her quite a bit iirc

D-40, Sunday, 26 February 2012 18:00 (thirteen years ago)

j0rdan have you never heard "1980"? it's amazing, maybe better than "american boy"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0ODOYNAuGM

estelle's debut album was patchy but its best moments were really strong

american boy is nails on a chalkboard to me for some reason

it seemed to get a lot of DJ play well past its sell-by date

D-40, Sunday, 26 February 2012 20:56 (thirteen years ago)

Sa-Ra - "Glorious"
Jill Scott - "Golden"
Dwele - "Hold On"

Andy K, Sunday, 26 February 2012 21:15 (thirteen years ago)

ploppawheelie V (k3vin k.), Monday, 27 February 2012 03:43 (thirteen years ago)

therapy sesh

ploppawheelie V (k3vin k.), Monday, 27 February 2012 03:44 (thirteen years ago)

iPhone just tried to autocorrect sesh to "swag" and I swear i've never typed that word before \o/

ploppawheelie V (k3vin k.), Monday, 27 February 2012 03:45 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i hate that song

J0rdan S., Monday, 27 February 2012 04:01 (thirteen years ago)

lol american boys

lex pretend, Monday, 27 February 2012 08:17 (thirteen years ago)

I like this new Estelle song

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUuEYM9vjlw

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Monday, 27 February 2012 10:22 (thirteen years ago)

Joining the anti-"American Boy" chorus. That song is so cloying I view everything Estelle has done since with suspicion.

Evan R, Monday, 27 February 2012 15:14 (thirteen years ago)

I love you guys, I thought I was the only one too.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 04:09 (thirteen years ago)

that estelle song confuses me. ("thank you," not "american boy.") specifically this line: "sometimes I wonder could she be more of a woman to you than you are a man to me." though it doesn't seem that confusing typed out. something about her phrasing when she's singing it is weird. also the chorus is sort of cringe-y. but her voice sounds nice.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 04:25 (thirteen years ago)

She has a new song with Janelle Monae that just leaked, too. It would probably be pretty good if Estelle weren't on it.

Evan R, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 06:01 (thirteen years ago)

iirc the "american boy" thread is really long bcuz we there was a major argument over whether or not it secretly sucked? or maybe it was some other BS

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 February 2012 06:06 (thirteen years ago)

iirc there was a long "Marcello says racist things" tangent and a long "state of r&b" tangent

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 06:13 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i remember the state of r&b tangent

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 February 2012 06:14 (thirteen years ago)

god, that's probably really embarrassing for a lot of us

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 February 2012 06:14 (thirteen years ago)

haha

ploppawheelie V (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 06:16 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, i just looked at it. it ain't pretty

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 06:29 (thirteen years ago)

D-40, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 07:21 (thirteen years ago)

"american boy" is obviously a great song. y'all just don't like being objectified

lex pretend, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 09:24 (thirteen years ago)

lol

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)

Weirdest part of that thread is where everybody pines to hear more "R&B house."

Everybody was all like, "this stuff is great, wish I could hear more of it." Guess the monkey's paw had the last laugh, huh?

Evan R, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:44 (thirteen years ago)

that was pre-guetta

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

whoooole different time

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:23 (thirteen years ago)

yeah if the current r&b-house stuff sounded like "Damaged" nobody would be complaining.

Peace (peaceful) (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:27 (thirteen years ago)

rich four four's 4x4 r&b mix from that year was so good

i'd been dreaming of an urban/dance fusion for YEARS before that too

and then it happened :(

lex pretend, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:34 (thirteen years ago)

haha i know right

D-40, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 22:19 (thirteen years ago)

You could actually make an interesting but depressing 5 yr chronological mix that starts with like "Please Don't Stop The Music" and "Because of You (Remix)", peaks with the golden age of stargate / the-dream and then works its way through to the bitter end with idk "Turn Me On" or something.

Tim F, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 22:33 (thirteen years ago)

it would start with "the way i are" i think

lex pretend, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 00:08 (thirteen years ago)

and if indeed "turn me on" is the bitter end of this awful trend, "starships" probably signifies a brand new avenue of shit for our pop stars to head enthusiastically down

lex pretend, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 00:09 (thirteen years ago)

:( i like both those songs.
