I've got a write up an overview of the year's best singles for a magazine tonight, spanning dance, r&b, hip hop and the groovier end of pop. Obviously I've got the last three covered, but I'm scratching my head over dance (ie. house, techno etc.) singles. I have so far:

Daft Punk - Romeo
Green Velvet - La La Land
Basement Jaxx - Romeo
Herbert - It's Only
Masters At Work - Work
Infusion - Legacy
4 Hero - Les Fleur
Squarepusher - My Red Hot Car
...and some 2-step (Sticky, So Solid Crew etc.)...

...BUT WHAT AM I MISSING????

Jean Jacques Smoothie - 2 People [well i like it]
Silicone Soul - Right On [kind of catchy]

michael, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh, the Bushwacka remix of 'Billie Jean'. now *that's* a record

michael, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Felix da Housecat - Silver Screen

Omar, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Funk D'void - Diabla
Slam - Lifetimes
Dave Clarke - Compass (I know, but it's only really just got released over here)
Hakan Lidbo - Sugartown, surely this was a single, it's his shortest track
Sticky - Booo (I second that)
Daft Punk - Harder, Stronger, Better, Faster
Playgroup - Number One
Fischerspooner - Emerge
And something by Morgan Geist, it's only now getting due recognition. Or Maurice Fulton - Not 'The Moo that Rocked the Electric Chair', the other single he did

K-reg, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Felix Da Housecat-Harlot. Kelis-Young Fresh and New-Timo Maas remix. Groove Armada-Superstylin'

I shall think of more presently.

RickyT, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Röyksopp - 'Eple'
I also liked rinôçérôse's 'Le Rock Summer'. It's not in the Daft Punk league of course.

Jeff W, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ooh and I like several tracks from this compilation, especially Cosmic Gate, Jakatta, Warp Brothers and Mario Piu. It says Spring 2001, some of these may have been from 2000 tho' (Rui da Silva? - good, whenever it was).

Not on this comp., but also good:
Planet Funk - 'Chase The Sun'
Basement Jaxx - 'Where's Your Head At?'

Jeff W, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Dave Clarke remix of Midfield General's "Coatnoise".

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does the Avalanche's "Since I left you" count? So pretty. SO sad. So happy. Neato.

And Nortec Collective's Polaris by Botisch. I think it's now on a Volvo ad.

Mickey Black Eyes, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

gareth, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

JoB, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what is a dance single? something that was actually released as a single? if you mean just like, a 12", then i vote for bump and flex 'promises'.

ambrose, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks for the help peoples! I was doing a list of twenty-five singles (note: released in Australia) and just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out any obvious ones. Which meant no remixes! Or UK-only releases! Or obscure 12 inches! I tell you, I nearly died.

Tim, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've got a few......some of which I think are listed already, but here goes:

Funk D'Void - Diabla Depeche Mode - I Feel Loved (Tenaglia Labour Of Love Mix) IIO - Rapture (John Creamer/Stephane K mix) Solid Sessions - Janeiro Science Department - Breathe (D. Howells drifting dub) Way Out West - Mindcircus

patrick, Saturday, 22 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can we keep naming songs anyway Tim?

Cos I forgot to mention loads.

Agent Sumo- er can't remember the name of it but it's got that sample "everybodys talkin bout the good old days" then its like a more disco daft punk.

Max Linen-Soulshaker.

X-Press 2-Smoke Machine.

I'll keep thinking, even if I am only amusing myself.

Ronan, Sunday, 23 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Agent Sumo - 24 hours

Who knew that both Daft Punk and Basement Jaxx had singles called "Romeo"?

Now that that little slice of bitchiness is out of the way, I have to admit strong fondeness for two ultra-cheesy remixes: the Junior Vasquez remix of Nelly Furtado's "I'm Like A Bird" and the Paul Oakenfold remix of Madonna's "What It Feels Like For A Girl".

Dan Perry, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I quite liked that song Compass by Dave Clarke despite it being a bit cheesey.

Also have any of you heard that single by Junior Jack? He's meant to be a mate of Felix Da Housecat, it's really fantastic. I'm not sure what the name of it is though. I'll try and find out.
