Just list a couple, I can't go out and buy 1000 new CDs. These are two genres I haven't gotten into yet, though.

jeffery (jeffery), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Where to start?!

In 'Deep House' there are literally thousands of compilations beginning in the early 90s. Labels, artists, DJs styles etc etc.

Something excellent and representative of the sort of "height" of "deepness" if you will, is something like Naked Music's 'Nude Dimensions' mixes. You really can't go wrong with 1 or 2.

Another great label is BBE. They have a lot of DJ compiled releases; some mixed, some not. My favorite release on BBE is the two disc Stop and Listen 5, Compiled by Masters at Work. It's a great cross-section of deep house, (paradise) garage, soul, salsa and more. It's unmixed, but works really well as a whole anyway.

More random suggestions:
va - Excursions mixed by Ian Pooley
va - Mad Styles and Crazy Visions mixed by Little Louie Vega (also on BBE)
va - Roy Davis Jr. in the Mix
va - The Nu Jazz Generation 2 (BBE again)

and I'll second the Jazzanova remixes double disc which is really amazing.

For something new, Tim Finney turned me onto Mei Lwun presents Uno Records which combines deep house with current electro-house sounds.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe some NRK comps, #4 perhaps, which contains the key track "Summer Daze" by Nick Holder.

also, some of the Guidance comps. Midnight Express Vol 1, Hi-Fidelity House, etc.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, if you can find This is Strictly Rhythm Volumes 1,2 or 3, then you can hear some of the basis for "deep house" (there are some really amazing productions on those from Masters at Work, Roger Sanchez etc).

Also, Murk sort of went off the rails for me a bit, but their early singles are fantastic (and "DEEP")

Deep South - "Believe"
Liberty City - "Some Lovin'"
Funky Green Dogs - "Reach for Me"
The Fog - "Been a Long Time"
Mission Control - "In Your Soul"
Bobby Pruitt - "Tried So Hard"
Coral Way Chiefs - "Release Myself"
Liberty City - "If You Really Want Someone"
etc etc

Also, a rare but excellent random track:
Chez Damier and Ron Trent - "54" sometimes "untitled"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

More of a 12" vinyl single genre, but

I second Moodymann BM

3 Chairs, S/T
Theo Parrish, Parallel Dimensions

Marques Wyatt "For Those Who Like to Get Down" is not bad, though it's not my cup of chai

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 06:58 (twenty-one years ago)

that doesn't sound very appetizing....many think it's GREAT, as long as it is THEIR cup of chai

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 06:59 (twenty-one years ago)

saint germain- tourist

its a must.

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Saint Germain Boulevard 3/3 is even better IMO. I'd also recommend House Of 909 The Children We Were, Deep Dish Junk Science, Danny Tenaglia Tourism, the eponymous Nu Yorican Soul album, and Mr Fingers Introduction.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i think 'Boulevard' is rather dull and monotonous, that Deep Dish album also very patchy. the Nu-Yorican Soul album classic thru and thru tho.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The Deep Dish album is great!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i actually bought Boulevard (for silly money on import) after Muzik picked it as best album of '95, found i didn't like it enough so part exchanged it for 'Junk Science' + even more cash and was disappointed with that as well. but looking back you're probably right Tim, i must listen again (i always loved Summer's Over, Sushi and My Only Sin at least).

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i still prefer BT's 'Ima' tho, dolphins an' all

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

MENTALIZM!

Ha ha although I shouldn't speak too soon because I bought and sold Ima in '96, at which point I most certainly did not "get" dance music. I can't even remember why I bought it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

it's overblown anthemic epic prog dance at it's ultimate height. Transeau (together with Sasha) just managed to make everything sound richer, deeper and more powerful but with great melodic elements and hooks - cheesy at times of course but i coped. the 'delphinium days' mix of his collaboration with Tori Amos is maybe the real peak there tho (i know it READS terrible but it's not if you like monumental piano breakdowns, all kinds of sonic wizardry/filters/transitions and melodic elements in your big trance)

this is about deep house tho so never mind...

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought and sold Ima in '96, at which point I most certainly did not "get" dance music.

This is a fascinating revelation!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Lil Louis - "Journey With The Lonely"
Ultra Nate - "Blue Notes In The Basement" (this '91 album deserves wider exposure).
A good compilation : DJ Harvey "Late Night Sessions"

not sure if it qualifies as deep house exactly, but Motorbass's Pansoul is magnificent...

from this year:

House Not House-A Groove Anthology
Ame-Ame

from other years
Glenn Underground-The SJU Project

and probably lots more I am too ignorant to know of.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Jimpster's Domestic Science
Koop Waltz for Koop
Jazzanova: The Remixes 1997-2000

while good records these are not jazz house albums.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

well it did say Jazz-House or Deep-House!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"looking for good liquid for showering, drinking etc"

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"This is a fascinating revelation!"

I was 14, admittedly. Actually if I recall I really wanted to get into dance so I bought the year end copy of Mixmag and bought its no. 1 choice for the year. I also got into The Prodigy and Chemical Bros etc etc but it was only a couple of years later that I got into honest to goodness club music - going to my first rave was a huge part of that.

Re Junk Science: what I always find interesting about that album is how it really stretches and strains towards innovative, interesting grooves - you can hear hints of Herbert, Isolee, Swayzak etc in there but it's all filtered through that more American understanding of deep house. That second half of "The Future of the Future" is amazing - the rhythm that sounds like coins skipping down a drain!

x-post Ronan I think Jed means there's nothing "house" about those.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah they're not deep house records either.

"looking for good liquid for showering, drinking etc"

huh?!

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh never mind.

It's so sad that "Flashdance" is the best Deep Dish can manage these days. I mean COME ON.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

xxpost: But Jazzanova turn "Sincere" into "Good Life"! Also, I think much of deep house and jazzy house happily blurs the line with all kinds of 'deep' music (a Paradise Garage mentality?). I'd even add the Costes mixes to the list (but stay AWAY from most other "lounge" comps).

Also, my first rave sped things up for me too, but I was always getting Latin Freestyle on L.A. urban radio - and my parents had the Saturday Night Fever 8-track, so I guess I was predisposed!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

well i'm not saying that there's nothing house about the Jazzanova record!

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The Costes mixes are great. that said it's amazing how cheap and cynical I feel selling yet another Costes CD to some boring 12 CD type. it's either that or Nouvelle Vague.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost, I see!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

nouvelle vague is great!!

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

did anyone recommend forevernevermore on this thread?

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

while good records these are not jazz house albums.

If they're not jazz house albums, they are __________ albums.

nader (nader), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

mark farina's san francisco sessions is awesome too. it's kind of post-deep house though. maybe tony humphries fabric mix?

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

god yeah that Farina mix is cool.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

If mixed compilations fit the criteria, Turbo's series of mix sessions from a few years back might be a touch overlooked...Equal to, if not superior to the Costes series.

Stockholm Mix Sessions mixed by Jesper Dahlbäck
Helsinki Mix Sessions mixed by Jori Hulkonnen
Stockholm Mix Sessions 2 mixed by Jesper Dahlbäck
Sheffield Mix Sessoins mixed by Chris Duckenfield

nader (nader), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i love spencer's recommendations in this thread!

xpost, those "mix sessions" series are way good, too.

what do people think of hulkkonen's proper albums?

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Hulkonnen's When No One's Watching... left me wanting more. Not unlike Oliver Hacke's Subject Carrier. That is, they're both good, but I was hoping for great. The local shoppe has a cheap, used copy of Jori's Different, but I'm waiting to read ILMer's feedback before I buy.

nader (nader), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

nader those three records i picked out are not house albums in anyones book, unless you are using "house" as a generic for "dance" or "electronic".

Im quite surprised to hear Nouvelle Vague is selling so well.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

There's also Gotan Project for the Tango-House category (which surprisingly didn't get old as quickly as I thought it would).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Jed, for the first 6 weeks of us having Nouvelle Vague I swear everytime we played it in the shop at least 2 people would ask about it and promptly buy it. On Saturdays we'd sell about 10 copies simply from playing it. It's insane.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Jed, there a few books that may differ from yours (see below).

Can we call Domestic Science a hybrid? I mean, if Mr. Jones was looking for a purist's perspective for an end-to-end homogenous jazz-house or deep house album, it wouldn't qualify, as it stradles both sought-after styles.

Maybe Domestic Science would serve as solid intro to both?

"37,000 Ft.," typical of [Jimpster's] strategy, combines the arpeggiated fireworks of Madonna's "Lucky Star" with the lazy flange of George Benson, even though at heart it's a house track.

"...its appeal lies in the way it traverses different styles – soulful electronica, jazz funk, deep house – within a very consistent mood and feel..."

"...house styles with a distinct smooth jazz feel..."

"... the deep house trips of [Domestic Science's] Deep Down and Knuckle Shuffle..."

Smooth, soulful, jazz/house hybrid

Possible tattoo

LocalGarda, Friday, 10 October 2025 01:11 (five months ago)

With apologies for further defilement, it’s interesting for me to think about how I would otherwise answer this question some twenty years later.

The Detroit house axis is so obvious an answer really, and I wonder if there is a better answer to the question “which (sub)genre of music has simply never been uncool at any stage since it first emerged”. But albums like Black Mahogani and Parallel Dimensions simply are that good.

Beyond that?

Motorbass - Pansoul
Black Science Orchestra - “Walter’s Room”
Herbert - Around the House
Faze Action - Moving Cities
Hawke - Namaquadisco
Deep Dish - Junk Science
Mr Fingers - Introduction
Lil Louis & the World - From the Mind of Lil Louis
Dubtribe Sound System - Baggage
Powder Productions - Cuban Fire
Bobby Konders - A Lost Era in NYC
Trus’me - Working Nights
DJ Sprinkles - Midtown 120 Blues

(Mentally excluding mixes, more post-Metro Area or Lindstrom nu-disco and German stuff)

Looking at that list I feel like there must be several obvious things missing.

Tim F, Friday, 10 October 2025 03:00 (five months ago)

16B - Sounds from Another Room

is an overlooked deep house LP, solid from front to back

henry s, Friday, 10 October 2025 12:17 (five months ago)

Maybe that Detroit Experiment record. Would Henrik Schwarz be controversial here? More Songs About Food And Revolutionary Art? I suppose that's considered techno but it is jazzy.

If we picked a mix CD for this thread what would it be?

LocalGarda, Friday, 10 October 2025 12:30 (five months ago)

Theo Parrish - First Floor

Newworldaquarium - The Dead Bears

And for a mix CD, Cassy's Panorama Bar 01 is an evergreen classic, if not strictly deep house.

secret ride, Friday, 10 October 2025 23:46 (five months ago)

thinking back on this, chez damier is kinda my gold standard for deep house. the tracks he did with ron trent and quite a bit of his own output. a house dj / party thrower brought chez to salt lake city one time. there were issues with the cdjs or something. they were not the models he expected. once he got going it was nice. i went up to say hi afterward, he gave me a hug, i was super drunk 🥴

she freaks, she speaks (map), Friday, 10 October 2025 23:53 (five months ago)

definitely larry heard too, though like everyone in this realm he can be a little hit or miss for me. i feel like dj sneak is underrated. i heard some newer dj sneak joint a few years back that i adored but i cannot for the life of me find it...

she freaks, she speaks (map), Friday, 10 October 2025 23:58 (five months ago)

i'm gonna be ilm-contrarian and say that dj sprinkles is just not that good, there is no funk in that queer's fingers, sorry. love her outside the music ofc. also feel like some of the newer detroit guys could get a little stagnant sometimes, i love a few mike huckaby tracks (rip) but some were a titch boring, also delano smith. i'm a big fan of theo though. you know who i think is underrated as a producer and though he's classified more as techno he's definitely deep house compatible - kenny larkin.
