Skip the first song and download the last two. Without doubt two of the best songs of the year.

I dont know anything about this band except they're British and consist of a boy and a girl.

Boxcar (Crapstone), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 18:54 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
The first single was fantastic produced by James Dean Bradfield of Manic Street Preachers I believe, very good job he done as well.

Do we know anything else about Johnny Boy yet? I'm still listening to the single pretty much every day. I want more.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

I was just wondering about them today, too. Last I heard they'd finished their album and planned to put it out early this year. I'm assuming it'll come out on Vertigo at some point, but since neither they nor the band appear to have a website, it's hard to say when.

Ryan Pitchfork, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Website here (A horrible Flash monstrosity, mind you). Not all that useful, seeing as how it doesn't seem to have been updated since 2004 (You Are The Generation… charted at #50 – Annie-confluence-tastic!), but I guess it'll have the album date when it's eventually released.

carson dial (carson dial), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

god i love this song!!

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

I've heard one track off a Boobytrap compilation, namely 'Johnny Boy's Adventures on the Wheels Of Steel', which manages to contain bits off YATGTBMS&YGWYD (namely the "YEAH YEAH!" bit and one other) and still sound not that much like it.

I'm really, really curious as to how this will unfold. You can't be a proper one hit wonder if you peaked at #50...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

I ought to thank you, MrS, since I probably wouldn't have got around to getting hold of "You are the generation..." if you hadn't raved about it. And you were right.

Any chance you can set me up with an mp3 of that other track then? This email address is real.

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

ah, i'm glad there is a thread about this band, because i heard that shoes song a while ago and wanted to come on ILM and complain about how bad it was.

it's bad.

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Does anybody notice a striking similarity between You Are The Generation... and Elvis Costello's Battered Old Bird, from Blood and Chocolate? The verses have almost the exact same melody.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

You kids must be losing your edge, cos the Johnny Boy album has ALREADY DROPPED!!!

Curt (cgould), Thursday, 10 March 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

I love the single. It's like Strawberry Switchblade doing "The Whole Of The Moon."

message from one who knows:

"The album is done. I have it. But they aren't signed and its in limbo till then. Made with dave eringa- very good."

Somebody sign them please now! If I had five grand to spare, I'd bloody do it myself...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:04 (nineteen years ago)

Damn it! How much do we have to bribe this person to get our hands on that copy? ;)

carson dial (carson dial), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:21 (nineteen years ago)

oh i'm working on it, you can believe that...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:28 (nineteen years ago)

no fucking label?!?! fuck this world. FUCK IT IN THE ASS

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

They're great live too, really decent no-bullshit people.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

apparently their deal with Mercury - or Vertigo, or whoever it was - was only for the one single, for some extremely bizarre reason (probably connected to their reluctance to be shagged up the jacksie by Teh Man).

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

this leaked now

and is very very very good

Hairy Asshurt (Toaster), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 00:33 (nineteen years ago)

how's the tracklisting looking?

i managed to get hold of a copy of their demo not long ago. they were fantastic even then.

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 00:39 (nineteen years ago)

10 tracks

opens with "you are the generation"

my favourite so far is "15 minutes"

Hairy Asshurt (Toaster), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 00:50 (nineteen years ago)

I love this album. "15 Minutes" is insanely catchy.

a. begrand (a begrand), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 01:05 (nineteen years ago)

Easily the best news I heard today. Listening now!

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 03:51 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, this is pretty incredible even though nothing touches the heights of "You Are The Generation" so far (like that was even going to happen). Whoever produced this needs to be discussed in the same hushed tones as Xenomania.

Between this, the new Belle & Sebastian, and the rumored Guillemots full-length, 2006 is looking like a banner year for twee.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 04:16 (nineteen years ago)

a lot of this seems like twee girls aloud

Hairy Asshurt (Toaster), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 11:33 (nineteen years ago)

Where would one hear this, then? Is it just a matter of sitting on slsk for a while?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

try this:

replace the 'xxxx' with http

Hairy Asshurt (Toaster), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

Thankyouthankyouthankyou. This is more than a little bit brilliant. how the fuck they can pull any of this off live i've no idea. I sort of hope they don't. But yes. Every bit of euphoric rush of YATGTBMSAYGWYD across an entire album. '15 Minutes' is amazing. Johnny Boy Theme is suddenly great. "I don't wanna buy now and then pay in Sep-tem-burrrr." It's a bit like Delakota, except kind of not. Oh boy.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

as far as i know these guys are in financial straights and put out the record themselves so if you like it please buy it.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

If anybody has contact details, I'll write them a cheque now and go buy it again when it's in the shops :)

carson dial (carson dial), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, definitely going to. Just can't figure out where from. http://froogle.google.co.uk/froogle_cluster?q=%22Johnny+boy%22&pid=1942711014793445871&oid=6314086693875764224&btnG=Search+Froogle&scoring=p&hl=en seems to suggest 101CD...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that website is supes old, does anyone have any contact info for them>

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

On second thought, that Froogle link would suggest that there is more than one Johnny Boy, and the album they list isn't by the Johnny Boy this thread's talking about. So it's not out or slated for release yet, presumably, cos Amazon and HMV turn up empty.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

!wargh!

thx for ysi!

am actually experiencing heart palpitations waiting for this to d/l. genuinely anticipated album!

so nobody picked it up for release? that's just shocking. we MUST all buy it. (yes, i know that's like 10 sales or something, but still)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i didn't mean to sound self righteous about it just that these guys are in a quite different position to most of the stuff i get for free!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

Hari, just curious, did this come from Soulseek, or some other sinister means?

carson dial (carson dial), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

dig this very much

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

it's not out or slated for release yet, presumably

The Swedish Wild Kingdom label released it last month... http://www.soundpollution.se/ does mail-order.

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

actually this is a bit crap. it sounds very MOR indie mostly.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

It's great. It's a pity they removed the Mamas & the Papas samples from "Johnny Boy Theme" and now sing them themselves. They gave the song a nice, naive, innocent touch.

barnaby69, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 22:50 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno...I like the new version more - crisper and bigger somehow. The whole record just sounds HUGE! Wall of sound indeed...

That said, after 1 listen all the way through, I'm pretty mixed. The highs are really super high, though.

hot doorknobs (hot doorknobs), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

Hairy Asshurt (Toaster), Thursday, 12 January 2006 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks! And for the link as well - it's made my month :)

carson dial (carson dial), Thursday, 12 January 2006 00:07 (nineteen years ago)

thanks for the link hari, this is great so far upon first listen, ive been waiting for this forever it seems!

jmeister (jmeister), Thursday, 12 January 2006 03:28 (nineteen years ago)

How good is it then?

Jeepster, Thursday, 12 January 2006 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

I've listened to it again today, and I am now officially disappointed. Actually I didn't expect it to sound like Chumbawamba...

snowballing (snowballing), Thursday, 12 January 2006 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

haha.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 12 January 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

I started listening to this on the train on the way into work and was so disappointed to get to work and have to stop listening. Then I went out at lunchtime and walked about for ages so I could listen to it again. And I'm listening to it again now. I really really love this.

jed_ is anti-tweeist, so his opinion doesn't count :) Someone sign these guys NOW.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 12 January 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

I was going to revive this myself cos i bought a 3 track album sampler promo at the weekend containing "...shoes", "15 mins" and "JB theme" which said on the back that the tracks were from the forthcoming album due August/Autumn 04! Was wondering where it got to.

Michael Lambert (Michael Lambert), Thursday, 12 January 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

every track has like Go Team! level enthusiasm. "springer" is the only track where it slows down a bit.

pinder (pinder), Thursday, 12 January 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

haha ailsa. the whole thing is worth it for "we are the generation..." but it's strayed too far into indie for my taste. i'm going to give it another try though, i loved it when i was listening to it in the bath and hearing it play loudly from the next room - just not so keen when i actually sat down and listened to it. On the other hand i think it's madness that they're not signed, this could be pretty big!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 12 January 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

I would love this record to be twee-er, instead of being a bit unnecessarily muscular. And yes, they obviously deserve to get signed, just because of YATGTBMSAYGWYD (if there's a mistake in the acronym, it's all William Bloody Swygart's fault, copied and pasted here)

snowballing (snowballing), Thursday, 12 January 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

KMKYWAP

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 12 January 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

can someone please reup?

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Sunday, 22 January 2006 11:46 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think this record is twee. It's too angry to be twee.

I love this album soooo much right now. I can't get enough of it. The one that's really killing me at the moment is "War On Want."

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

All Exits Final reminds me of Morrison's Kill Your Boyfriend (so does the entire album, but that song in particular).

Damn slack Swedes - it took them a week to ship my order, and it's still not here yet!

carson dial (carson dial), Sunday, 22 January 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, Kill Your Boyfriend is a pretty amazing and accurate connection to make. Right on!

Now that I think of it, it's kinda like the Morrison aesthetic in pop form, isn't it?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 22 January 2006 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

Spooky: I've spent all January so far listening to Johnny Boy and thinking about KYBF, and I didn't even think of the shared aesthetics.

Cheers Carson for providing the missing piece.

KG

Kieron Gillen (kmg), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

Amusingly, Kieron, it was your argument elsewhere about KYBF and The Invisibles that made me think about it in the first place!

carson dial (carson dial), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

i am surprised by how much i am enjoying this. i feel like i need a shower or something.

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

Were they this decades great lost band? One of the best singles of the decade, a great well received debut album but they seem to have disappeared entirely. Their myspace page doesn't appear to have been updated significantly for about 2 years and google doesn't produce much more. Such a shame if that's the case.

Billy Dods, Sunday, 23 November 2008 19:29 (sixteen years ago)

i was so disappointed by the album that it ruined the single for me too :(

thereminimum chips (electricsound), Sunday, 23 November 2008 22:11 (sixteen years ago)

I don't quite get the love for this band. You Are The Generation... was great but the album itself sounded like some Evening Session fodder from 1998. The bits that didn't sound like Republica that is.

Chopper Aristotle (Matt DC), Sunday, 23 November 2008 22:55 (sixteen years ago)

indeed

thereminimum chips (electricsound), Sunday, 23 November 2008 22:57 (sixteen years ago)

Anybody know what every happened to these guys? I started playing an ILX mix in the car the other day, and it had Generation on it… they seem to have disappeared.
