miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:44 (twenty years ago)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:56 (twenty years ago)

again, i have the feeling my number one will be sorely overlooked.
i hope i'm wrong, though

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:57 (twenty years ago)

What we have learned already: "Loveless" is the shoo-in of the century. But we didn't need this thread to figure that out.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:59 (twenty years ago)

it's the one spoon album worth getting, james. basically an indie-rock entertainment.

i knew simply by the no. 1 choice which ballot was alex in sf's!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:00 (twenty years ago)

I'll save mine until the results start coming, I think - this will kill the excitement, as if lots of people post theirs it will become clear roughly how well things are doing.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:00 (twenty years ago)

it's the one spoon album worth getting, james. basically an indie-rock entertainment

I'd stand by Telephono and Girls Can Tell

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:02 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking about holding off till the results too, but fuck it, maybe exit polls will make people bitch less (haha not likely)

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:03 (twenty years ago)

"i knew simply by the no. 1 choice which ballot was alex in sf's!"

Hahaha I strive for predictability (although I am bummed no one else seemed to vote for it--unless Matos and Jess did.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:04 (twenty years ago)

i like most of the stuff on yr list, alex, it just would've been revisionist for me to vote for a lot of those records -- my ballot is more what i listened to the most during the '90s.

"it just would've been revisionist for me to vote for a lot of those records -- my ballot is more what i listened to the most during the '90s."

Yeah, I definitely voted either for the records I still really really love now or records that I loved then and felt I really wanted to place well. That said, my top 7 records (excepting perhaps the DB mix) thing would definitely have been very near if not in my top 20 at the end of the 90s.

Well I'm British and four of my top ten are hip hop albums. I suspect this idea that Brits dislike hiphop and non-white music generally is nonsense.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:05 (twenty years ago)

well, i suppose my soft bulletin nomination was wasted :)

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:08 (twenty years ago)

i don't know todd, this might just be an exit poll quirk. everyone i know thinks soft bulletin is a better album than yoshimi and that did well on the 00s list so wait and see.

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:10 (twenty years ago)

"Well I'm British and four of my top ten are hip hop albums. I suspect this idea that Brits dislike hiphop and non-white music generally is nonsense."

It is nonsense, but it won't stop American assholes from repeating over and over.

Not That Chuck, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:57 (twenty years ago)

regret giving a vote to midnight vultures (the first half of the album plus debra equals a top album), probably would have put in out of time. I am also guilty of radiohead discrimination by denying a vote to ok computer
biggest omissons = Spiritualized - Royal albert hall, Mercury Rev -See you on the other side

jb, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:13 (twenty years ago)

That the Bjork votes going towards Post outnumber those going to Homogenic by almost 2 to 1 is the first indication that this list is going to suck something fierce. That and the fact that only two other people have indicated they voted for Nuyorican Soul. Obviously I'm attempting to rally around the anti-indie usual suspects with this ballot:

1. Masters at Work - Nuyorican Soul
2. Madonna – Erotica
3. Bjork - Homogenic
4. Basement Jaxx - Remedy
5. Underworld - Second Toughest in the Infants
6. DJ Shadow – Endtroducing
7. Outkast - Aquemini
8. Motorbass - Pansoul
9. A Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory
10. Tricky – Maxinquaye
11. The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde
12. Daft Punk - Homework
13. Herbert - Around the House
14. Missy Elliott – Supa Dupa Fly
15. Michael Jackson - Dangerous
16. Massive Attack - Blue Lines
17. Aphex Twin – Selected Ambient Works Vol II
18. The Chemical Bros. - Dig Your Own Hole
19. Goldie – Timeless
20. Mariah Carey – Emotions

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:32 (twenty years ago)

The fact that bjork is getting many votes could only indicate doom. And let me be the first to extend a big ol middle finger to Weezer before this thing gets going.

Not a hater. I like her fine. But lets be reasonable here. She's what I would call, pretty good. I just don't understand people's berzerk admiration of her.

I just don't understand people's berzerk admiration of her.

a large part of it is her relative uniqueness. nobody else out there quite like her or able to do what she's done.

Those are the records i like, what can I say. My singles list is very different. Actually, I like Bjork tracks a lot but I have never stuck with one of her records. I own them, but really only put them on to hear one or two songs.

hey i like that list, it's not dissimilar to mine.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 19 November 2004 18:26 (twenty years ago)

yeah, I like your list a lot jed. I definitely feel you on the Buckley, C. Craig, Walker and Talk Talk love. I don't know why no Autechre made my list. Hmm. Maybe I just forgot them or something. I almost put the LFO on, but it didn't make the final cut I guess.

I really need to hear the Necks. Everything I've read about them leads me to believe they could be my next favorite band. I need to check out the Red House Painters too; never heard them either. Scott Seward always tells me I'd like 'em..

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 19 November 2004 18:37 (twenty years ago)

for me the 69 record is thee Carl Craig record, do you have it? theres lots of stuff on your list that should be on mine though. also mail me if you want to do some sort of swop thing re. The Necks - i think i have just about everything.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 19 November 2004 18:41 (twenty years ago)

yep, I do have the 69 -- although it's been lent out to a friend who has had for, errr, over a year now! I really need to get that thing back (this guy also has about 15 other of my CDs; he borrowed a bunch at once to do a radio show and I still haven't gotten them back yet. grrrr.) I love that CD but I guess I just find myself playing the Paperclip People most often. I love the two under his name too. Were they nominated? I can't remember.

Sure, a swap sounds great!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 19 November 2004 18:48 (twenty years ago)

i will mail you about it over the weekend then : )

jed_ (jed), Friday, 19 November 2004 19:41 (twenty years ago)

fauxhemian (fauxhemian), Friday, 19 November 2004 20:02 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I love them! It IS a great record too, I listened to it again when I was doing my list. It doesn't have a chance in hell of making the top 100 though :(

Word is they have a new one due soon...

thanks jed - I forgot about smog when i compiled the list! I haven't heard the scott walker and not that talk talk album but I should get round to those (I really like 'spirit of eden'). As for Pole I've enjoyed it but the thing with his stuff is that it would be one of the greatest singles evah, it kind of loses its appeal over a whole album.

I definitely think the failure of ANY US dance music to make the poll is the biggest omission. In terms of individual albums, I'd stand by my placing "The Infamous" and "Lazer guided melodies" so high, and wish they'd got into the poll. Looking at my list, it's very allergic to rock, but then there was no good rock in the 90s, so I guess that's fair.
