Culture Beat's "Mr Vain" - a true classic?

I know what I want and I want it now.....

Not as good as Faces by 2 Unlimited -'Faces, faces everywhere, expressing joy and pain'

What are your favourite early 90s Euro-dance hits? Where is Haddaway now? Does anyone remember the hilarious Melody Maker Euro-pop special in which Simon Price, etc. managed to wind all the indie kids?

Haddaway should be on the names thread, surely. Snap's rhythm is a dancer is up there with Culture Beat. Great videos too.

I loved it. But the follow-up, "Got To Get It", was better, and still moves me to near-tears.

A true stinker. Being exposed to it far too many times made me hate it even more. Something which I could not even imagine... I think it's mainly the vocal delivery that made my head spin round and round and round like a record baby round now...

Mainland Europeans get embarrassed about Eurodance a lot, don't they? (no offence Helen!)

And sometimes they have cause to. But not, I think, in this case. Did you feel the same way about "Got To Get It"?

Robin Carmody, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Mr Vain' is cool, but not quite the classic that Technotronic's 'Get Up (Before the Night is Over)' and Salt N Peppa's 'Pump the Jam' are. Pure gold.

DavidM, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, Robin! I actually wanted to add that "Got To Get" was mucho fun. Lightheated and airy. You can't help but shake yer bonbon bum when you hear Leila K (spelling?).

helenfordsdale, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lighthearted. But hell lightheated is what I was when I saw her on the telly. hah!

helenfordsdale, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Got To Get" is indeed GRATE.

But "Pump Up The Jam", although also GRATE, was by Technotronic as well, not Salt'n'Pepa.

Robin Carmody, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ooh, looking back at that you misunderstood me. You were referring to "Got To Get" by Rob'n'Raz featuring Leila K, I was thinking of "Got To Get It", Culture Beat's follow-up to "Mr Vain".

Of course all this stuff is marvellous by definition. Do dancefloors ever get better than when "The Power" is playing?

Tim, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No they don't, Tim.

Time to revive "Eurodance: Search and Destroy", surely ...

All I have to say is: CAPTAIN HOLLYWOOD PROJECT.

I wish it was 1993 again.

Dan Perry, Saturday, 22 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does anyone remember the hilarious Melody Maker Euro-pop special in which Simon Price, etc. managed to wind all the indie kids?

Great stuff. 2 Unlimited were hilariously surreal sex robots.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 22 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rather unsurprisingly everytime I played this track to friends over Xmas, they enjoyed it, there's no doubt about that. But none would admit it. Their excuse, it's not real music.
