Drum & Bass Selection 3 or 4. Both mixed by DJ Hype.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember Tim Finney recommending one by Grooverider which I still haven't been able to find...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Grooverider Presents Hardstep Selection II (volume one isn't mixed, I don't think.) It's very good too, but definitely less jungle and more drum'n'bass.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

whats that one matos loves? history of our world?

bulbs (bulbs), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ DB's History of Our World Part 1: Breakbeat & Jungle Ultramix. It's definitely more hardcore/darkcore less jungle. The second part is just called History Part II, unfortunately it loses steam after about track 11.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, that's the one that Tim has mentioned? Tim?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

You know it's weird, there really aren't that many good jungle mixes. I have a bunch of mp3s of various AWOL tapes and what not and between the air raid sirens and the pervasive MC chatting you can barely hear the tracks themselves (there is actually an official Ministry of Sound @ AWOL CD which HAS this exact same problem amplified--and it's really sad cuz the tracklist is freakin' gorgeous.) The Speed Limit comps are all mixed, but not creatively or anything and there are a few other DJ Hype things (Jungle Massive and the United Dance one) and hardcore into jungle things (History of Hardcore) and a bunch of second disc mixes of okay comps, but otherwise that's basically that for what is commercially available. I think it's one of the reasons a lot of people got so excited about the Soundmurderer comp.

i have hardcore massive 1 - thats not mixed.

bulbs (bulbs), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh weird. I'll have to look for it. It's bookend by two happy hardcore-ish discs.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

yes i noticed haha...i bought mine as a single disc (unless you want those happyhcore discs...)

bulbs (bulbs), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

most of the mixes i had when i was into the scene were from friends and friends of friends on tapes, but i remember this being on cd and being pretty good ragga and hip hop flavored jungle (even with shitty cover art)

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for your suggestions. The only mixes I have are the Soundmurderer one and the Amon Tobin Solid Steel. I really like them both but want to find more. I do like both Grooverider and Hype so I will have to check those mixes out. Anything else is appreciated.

tk, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

CD2 of Goldie's INCredible sounds of drum & bass rates. Think its titled 'Spektrum' and its definitely that.

harshaw (jube), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

they're pretty chill but i always liked react's artcore series a lot, mainly volumes 2 + 3. especially 3.

and it's not a mix but 'toasted: massive ragga jungle' is probably the jungle disc i've spun the most over the years.

big baby jesus., Wednesday, 10 November 2004 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a History of Harcore Volume 2 mix which was smashing but a friend borrowed it and then decamped to the US (this is the story of my life).

But yeah, my favourite is "Grooverider Presents Hardstep Selection II" - drum & bass yeah, but the best kind - "Your Sound", "The Angels Fell", "Babylon", "She's So", the moment when everything started to go eerie and atmospheric but kept the rhythmic presha. And there's enough traces of honest to goodness jungle - R&B vocal rips, ragga chanting, amen mash-ups - that it doesn't really lose anything by dint of its relative sophistication.

Also great is the 3-disc Fantazia Takes You Into The Jungle set - mixes by Grooverider, Bukem and DJ Rap. Grooverider and Rap's sets in particular are smashing, more intently focused on rhythmic insanity than any other DJ sets I've heard from the period. The Bukem mix is more wishy washy but still good - I think it's like half made up of early Photek tunes (mostly under pseudonyms).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

if only Goldie's first Radio 1 Essential Mix had been officially released, i'd pick that

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

What did it have Steve?

dj die - live from the tuesday club (xtra bass week)

cynwad, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Stuff taped off the radio / dodgy tapes that got chewed after a week were always my favorite source for D&B sets. The only 'official' mixes I can think of that haven't been mentioned already are Doc Scott's Mixmag Live CD and Kemistry & Storm's DJ Kicks outing.

The Doc Scott one isn't particularly interesting as far as DJing goes, but has some classic tracks on it (Metropolis, Shadow Boxing). Kemistry & Storm's mix is better put together, but spends too much time in dull tech / hardstep territory to be truly classic.

I recently DLd some good Randall and Kenny Ken live sets from late '93 that I'd love to hear good quality copies of. They fall just on the jungle side of ardcore / jungle and are well worth checking out. If you like the Soundmurderer set you might also want to check out DJ Ripley. She has an mp3 mix (Havoksound) floating around out there somewhere on the interweb.

Graeme (Graeme), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I suppose there's also Bukem's Progression Sessions series...which I would have remembered to mention if I could think of anything to say about them. There's one I quite like, but I can't remember which one it is.

Graeme (Graeme), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Pure Rollers - mixed by Andy C

Aweful, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

six years pass...

So I'm getting pretty obsessed with this FACT Raime mix:

http://www.factmag.com/2011/10/17/fact-mix-292-raime/

I don't know any of these tracks, but I love the whole thing. What else should I be listening to?

toby, Thursday, 20 October 2011 06:37 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah that Raime mix is pretty cool. Haven't come across any recent d&b mixes that I could recommend although Ben Ufo put together a homage to the metalheadz blue note sessions fairly recently. It was ok.

Some personal favourites while we're on the subject:

- Grooverider's BBC Ess Mix (1996)
- DJ Rap's Journeys Through The Land Of Drum 'N' Bass (1995)
- Bukem's Mixmag Live (1996)
- Kemistry & Storm's Reinforced mix (1996)

sam500, Thursday, 20 October 2011 08:05 (fourteen years ago)

A couple of years someone on ILM posted a link to a mid-90s d&b radio mix session by A Guy Called Gerald, which I think was awesome. Sadly though, I've lost the file, and I can't remember the site where it was hosted... Does anyone remember this, and still have the file, or the link?

Tuomas, Thursday, 20 October 2011 12:57 (fourteen years ago)

Tuomas, do you mean this one? Because that is a fantastic AGCG mix. Download link at the bottom of that page.

errant flynn, Saturday, 22 October 2011 20:57 (fourteen years ago)

DJs post your mixes for download

this mix is great. same period as the raime one, and one of the same tunes in fact.

zvookster, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 16:46 (fourteen years ago)

there's a lot more euphoric rushing feeling on it than the raime mix which was a bit colder and more boring imo

zvookster, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 18:11 (fourteen years ago)

Not an 'all-time best' but definitely one of my favorites, sound cuts out at one point but it's no thing

Listened to this one more times than I can count, not sure how people here feel about the 'pop' sound he does but I think it's great. This one is relentless

All of Todd Osborn's Soundmurderer stuff is fantastic

Brakhage, Saturday, 29 October 2011 01:54 (fourteen years ago)

one year passes...

i just got this one, it's rather dope

junglized: jazzy funky drum'n'bass

anybody heard this new uncle dugs mix?

uncle dugs - rinse: 20

feel like i have every track on it on at least three other compilations, but hey

the late great, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:23 (thirteen years ago)

the uncle dugs has a great tracklist. i'm not sure if i know all those noise factory tracks. dunno why they had to throw "bambaataa" in at the end though.

strongo hulkington's ghost dad, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:46 (thirteen years ago)

that looks hot. thanks for the tip.

jed_, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 01:53 (thirteen years ago)

Both those Noise Factory tracks are ace. One is a Speed Limit Comp, I think. Who is Uncle Dugs?

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 02:56 (thirteen years ago)

Are the last two tracks really allowed to play uninterrupted for the last ten minutes? That Zinc remix is good, but that's seems kinda overkill (esp. since only two other tracks break four minutes--the awesome X Project choon and the slightly less awesome and way overplayed "Pulp Fiction").

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 03:00 (thirteen years ago)

yes yes but what about JUNGLIZED?!?

the late great, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 03:09 (thirteen years ago)

Hah I've only heard 44 Mag and Circles from that!

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 03:10 (thirteen years ago)

most of it sounds like 44 mag

the late great, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 03:50 (thirteen years ago)

ie awesome

the late great, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 03:50 (thirteen years ago)

Listening to jungle while reading... I haven't listened to a lot of mixes in the 160+ tempo but I really enjoyed this mix by SVN https://soundcloud.com/trushmix/trushmix-24-svn

Also this DJ TLR jungle mix is excellent https://soundcloud.com/cremeorganization/dj-tlr-live-jungle-mix-radio-student-ljubljana-19914

chrisulloa, Thursday, 24 December 2015 16:24 (ten years ago)

Junglized is one of the first DnB mixes that I ever heard and is still one of my favorites, it does a great job of transitioning from fairly jazzy and light tracks to darker hip-hop influenced tracks like 44 Mag and Lockdown.

One mix collection that I've been coming back to a lot lately is Renegade Continuum mixed by DJ Dara. I have a lot of affection for the 2 Paradox tracks on disc 1 with their sweet Dune samples.

i have been wanting to hear the artcore comps for years,
but they never turn up in charity shops these days.
thankfully archive.org has done the trick :
