Especially of Strangelove.

Stephen Stockwell (Stephen Stockwell), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:42 (twenty years ago)

If you're including that new three disc compilation, definitely the Ulrich Schnauss remix of Little 15.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:47 (twenty years ago)

My god, this list could go on forever. (Just get the comp, I am!)

As for "Strangelove" itself, the 'Midi mix' is great cause it sorta invents microhouse. But let me listen to the single here in a bit and say more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:50 (twenty years ago)

Had no idea about that compilation, guys. Sounds crucial.

Stephen Stockwell (Stephen Stockwell), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:52 (twenty years ago)

i always liked the "blind mix" of strangelove - like the way the vocal is stripped down and the synth riff almost feels like a dub excursion, all the while the low end just sorta chugs away.

also the tim simenon/mark saunders mix is a nice revisitation of the track

other mixes to watch out for:

behind the wheel/route 66 (beatmasters mix)
dangerous (hazchemix)
enjoy the silence (harmonium mix)

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:59 (twenty years ago)

hmmm got cut off mid=post

also:

policy of truth (trancentral mix)
happiest girl (pulsating orbital vocal mix)
world in my eyes (mayhem mode mix)

after that there's not many bad mixes... there's more too but i'm tired and headed to bed. that'll get you started

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 03:00 (twenty years ago)

*there's more good early ones too...

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 03:01 (twenty years ago)

Many early good ones. Hell, the six minute remix of "Just Can't Get Enough" that Daniel Miller did for their third single is easily one of the best they ever did.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 03:02 (twenty years ago)

Enjoy the Silence QUAD MIX FOR THE LOVE OF JEEBUS
Sea of Sin (Sensoria Mix)
Death's Door (Jazz Mix)
There's an 8min+ extended remix of "Shake the Disease" ... can't remember what it's called ...

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 03:04 (twenty years ago)

Enjoy the Silence QUAD MIX FOR THE LOVE OF JEEBUS

There's also the first long mix on the CD single which is just...damn. I mean, really, DAMN.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 03:08 (twenty years ago)

The "Hands and Feet" Mix (~7 min, basically an extended version of the single)? Oh yes.

I forgot to mention the Underworld remix of "Barrel of a Gun".

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 03:14 (twenty years ago)

There was a great mix of "It's No Good" too - was it Hardfloor?

I also love the Thomas Brinkmann mix of "I Feel Loved". I'm not at all a completist fan but even I know enough good DM mixes offhand to make a fourth or fifth disc for that comp.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 03:58 (twenty years ago)

The Rex the Dog mix of "Photographic" is hott.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 04:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeah it is.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 04:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure if it was ever on a single, but Andrea Parker had a remix of "It's No Good" on her DJ Kicks album that I liked.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 04:04 (twenty years ago)

I really must get all the various singles that are coming out too along with the comp. Mmm. (Currently listening to the "Strangelove" single like I said I would. There are very, very few bands that sound so utterly perfect every time I play them.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 04:06 (twenty years ago)

The "On--USound Science Fiction Dance Hall Classic" mix of "Master & Servant" is astonishing. Also love the "Metalmix" of "Something to Do" (like a pop Neubauten) and the plain ol' extended version of "Shake the Disease." And the quad mix of "Enjoy the Silence," oh my yes.

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 04:22 (twenty years ago)

How handy that said metalmix is on the "Shake the Disease" single, to which I listen this very second, oh yes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 05:26 (twenty years ago)

The Adrian Sherwood mixes (aforementioned "Master and Servant" and "Are People People?") are ridiculously great. They're also responsible for Ministry hiring Sherwood as a prodcuer and the quantum leap they made from With Sympathy to Twitch.

x-post

anode (anode), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 05:27 (twenty years ago)

I've got 12's for that extended version of 'Shake the Disease', plus:
the German release of 'Everything Counts'
Daniel Miller's 'Get the Balance Right' with the four live tracks on the B-side
Miller's German 'It's Called a Heart'/'Flies on the Winscreen'
'Master & Servant' with the Release mix of 'Set Me Free'
UK 'A Question of Lust', and
UK 'Never Let Me Down'

From what I can remember that is; I'm not sure. I've just moved out of my girlfriend's place with only a handful of CDs to listen to. Frustrating, yes. But 'Music for the Masses' happens to be one of them and I believe, in these last weeks of semester, that I'm only now starting to fully appreciate the sex-appeal dripping off of 'Strangelove'. Now there is a song I'd go to bed with. It's been a Strangelove week. Hence the desire to check out what themes remixers drew out of it as well.

From what I've heard, there seems to be an almost uniform sense of rising to an ocassion displayed by people who've done remix work on Depeche Mode tracks. Or at least I like to think so.

Stephen Stockwell (Stephen Stockwell), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 06:25 (twenty years ago)

There was a great mix of "It's No Good" too - was it Hardfloor?

Yes it was Hardfloor. And it is good.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:02 (twenty years ago)

I Feel Loved (Danny Tenaglia's Labour Of Love mix) - stunning.
Also seconded: Photographic (Rex The Dog mix).
Also thirded: Enjoy The Silence (Quad mix).

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 10:19 (twenty years ago)

the Goldfrapp mix of 'Halo'

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:05 (twenty years ago)

the octagon man of dream on is really noisy and great too

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:11 (twenty years ago)

Also Speedy J's surprisingly great scary drum & bass mix of "It's No Good"!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 12:26 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
The Rex the Dog mix of "Photographic" is hott.

YES IT IS. (I am finally listening to the remix compilation at last. It's probably one of the best compilations ever, actually.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

I've a Kid606 remix of "Dream On" on my hard drive though I've no idea where it came from (the mp3 / the track itself). Nothing knockout but kinda nice and fluttery, the vocals seem treated and smudged to indecipherabiliy too til they're just another part of the tune..

peteflynn (piratestyle), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

And the Ulrich Schnauss remix of "Little 15" is really something -- all the original vocals are kept but the backing, aside from that piano part that surfaces every so often, is completely new, gentle minimal keyboard parts with tons of echo up until the halfway point when a faster but still restrained bass part begins.

I've a Kid606 remix of "Dream On" on my hard drive though I've no idea where it came from (the mp3 / the track itself).

It was one of the mixes released with the original single, I forget which format. It's been included on the rerelease of the single in the sixth box set.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

DJ Shadow... Painkiller.

I think that's a Depeche Mode song; I'm more of a Shadow fan than a DM fan though. Maybe someone could confirm. Terrific track nonetheless.

KeithW (kmw), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Yep, it's an instrumental that appears on the "Barrel of a Gun" single (a brief take appears as an unlisted track at the end of Ultra).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 January 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...
Every time I'm in a work crunch and I need something to listen to to help get it all done, I go straight to the remixes box set. And I'm a happy person indeed. (I really should compile a lot of the other mixes into a separate CDR set.)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 6 April 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

Everything Counts (Oliver Huntemann & Stephan Bodzin Dub)!!

fies, Friday, 6 April 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

love the "Metalmix" of "Something to Do" (like a pop Neubauten)

Repeating my original reaction to Douglas's post a bit but yes, yes indeed.

Remix [Re-remix] - Adrian Sherwood

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 18:26 (sixteen years ago)

so otm about the 'schizo mix' of "just can't get enough"

rio (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

Surprised there's been no mention of the Kruder & Dorfmiester rmx of Useless yet. I read somewhere it's one of Martin Gore's favourites.

chap, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 19:12 (sixteen years ago)

That Ulrich Schnauss mix of "Little 15" Ned mentions is truly gorgeous. Very spare and fragile, but also sort of malleable below the surface (malleable might not be the right word!)
